Is there such a thing as a stylish walking sandal?

Am off to Vietnam in a few months where there will be a fair bit of walking. I have found as I’ve got older that I’m less tolerant of uncomfortable shoes but still want something with a bit of style.
In the past I’ve had sketchers that took all the skin off my heels in NY and others that have rubbed my toes,🙁
Does anyone have any recommendations for a not too fugly looking sandal suitable for wearing all day?

Trekking in Vietnam is often muddy and damp because the landscape is so lush.

I would go with long loose trousers and tops and closed walking shoes.

Because..... leeches.

I have some Teva sandals that are now falling apart but have seen me through so many holidays including Italy, Thailand, Cambodia. They were similar to this but with more of a cushioned sole.

We are not going ‘off road’ Hotpot, visiting Hong Kong, Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh.

Oh, OK!

Can you fit in a couple of days at Hoi An when you visit Hue?

Good idea to have good walking sandals, you will thank yourself for it.

feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 12:40

Oh, yes Hoi An too! In fact, anywhere beginning with the letter ‘h’ it seems!

Yes definitely spend as much time as possible in hoi an. It's amazing. Has everything. Loads of tailors so have a think before if you want something made. Food is amazing there and Dan beaches (go to the locals one not the tourist one). The locals will try to put you off saying it's dirty but it isn't!

Hanoi is very cool but very polluted so consider a mask. We bought a street food tour for Hanoi and would strongly recommend it. I don't normally like to tour guide thing but this was worth it.

Tevas as well. I think mine were mens - can order a 6. So plain black. But, a have a high arch and the Birkenstocks are better. I wear them on alternate days.

museumum · 16/03/2019 12:51

Teva sandals are the only ones I find genuinely comfortable. 90% of Tevas are really ugly but it’s worth looking for the 10% that aren’t. I’ve a lovely simple brown leather pair that are city-acceptable.

feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 12:52

Minimum am hoping to get something silk, not bothered what tho! We have 3 days in Hoi An so will definitely try out your beach recommendations!

Everyone takes the mickey out of my Tevas but they soon shut up when they see how functional they are...planning on finding the least ugly pair I can to get me through being heavily pregnant at work in May and June!
Friend rates Karrimor sandals as well

Heyha · 16/03/2019 13:00

Argh not Karrimor for sandals, it's Merrell.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/03/2019 13:02

I have Earth Spirit sandals and have walked comfortably for hours in them

peridito · 16/03/2019 13:14

Like the look of those Earth Spirit jobbies Rocking .They look as tho they would accomodate my high instep /cubiod shaped feet .

RugbyRugby · 16/03/2019 13:19

Always pack some Compeed - the large ones - if you are walking and always have one on you at all time. Put one in your purse.

A preventative compeed on the heel when you first start wearing some new shoes can really help wear them in without pain.

Furx · 16/03/2019 13:31

One ting you might want to think about is how easy they are to slip on and off.

In SE Asia it is quite common to remove shoes before stepping in a building. In many areas this most definitely includes shops and cafes.

I shan’t forget the sight of a poor flustered lady clearly suffering in the heat, massively overdressed , sitting down with a huge sigh as she struggled to get her overly fussy sandals off for what was clearly the umpteenth time that morning.

Birkenstocks are ideal.

Heismyopendoor · 16/03/2019 13:34

I don’t think those sandals are fugly. They are something I would wear and I’m 30 this year. They look comfortable and good for a walking/sightseeing type holiday.

We are going to Florida this year and I will be getting something similar.

HeyLala · 16/03/2019 13:37

If you want designer - Try these by Prada. I'll be walking round Austrailia in them next week.
So comfortable.

In Hoi An We liked the stretch of beach between An Bang and Cua Dai at Cam An: signposted “Hidden Beach” from the road, the side road to the beach 100m Nort (or so) of the Boutique Hoi An hotel.

3 good cafes there, Wild Eaves, Beach Quest and another.

So many lovely places in Hoi An, the Old Town so beautiful at night.

My Son temples nearby are a must (IMO). Cycle to the ‘herb village’.

They do have torrential flash rainstorms.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/03/2019 14:31

@peridito sounds like we have similar feet! Earth Spirit came recommended by a friend who was recovering from a foot op, and they are SO comfy. Just realise they prob have different styles, attaching photo of mine. I got mine for just under £30 last year

I recommend Merrell sandals - I was surprised at how comfy they are

These are unbelievable, and I have fussy feet. Velcro so endlessly adjustable. Soft footbed, and leather lined.
Walked miles in humid New York and Florida and no rubbing or blisters.

XingMing · 16/03/2019 15:23

@FeltCarrrot, I bought the same shoes last year in the same colour, and your feet will be comfortable. Love mine, but your DH is right: they are fugly not stylish.
