Uniqlo Ultra Down Jacket - Ruined?

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 11:43

Just washed it in the machine on 30 degrees. Supposed to be handwash (didn't check the label, thought I'd washed it in the machine before- clearly not).

FFS.

The filing has gone into little balls. It can't be saved can it? Or can it?

Gutted.

Putting something into the dryer with a tennis ball can help redistribute down and help it lie evenly. I'm not sure it will help if it's already clumped though...

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/03/2019 11:53

A dryer with something to pummel it, like dryer balls, a couple of clean gym shoes or tennis balls is what usually works, but TBH that looks really bad and I'm not sure if it's recoverable. It wouldn't hurt to try though, it's not as though it can get any more ruined.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 11:56

Thanks both I did wonder about the tumble dryer. I'm SUCH a duffas. I have neither tennis or dryer balls and no trainers suitable for a dryer. Might try it without.

Such a handy warmish thing. Grrr.

I’ve done exactly this and the tumble dryer sorts it

ilovecherries · 14/03/2019 11:58

I had this and it did recover in the dryer with lots of pummelling. I used some jeans, a pack of tennis balls and a pair of old but clean trainers. You need LOTS of pummelling, a half hearted single dryer ball won’t do it. I put it on for an hour at a time on low heat, good shake and worked the wads with my fingers in between cycles. I think it took me about 4 cycles to get it sorted. As new after all that carry on though!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/03/2019 11:59

It won't work without, you need something to bash the filling around. If you don't have something in with the jacket you'll just get dry clumps.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 12:02

Oh fuck it. It's been inthe dryer with some other clothes for 3 minutes and is now practically dry with the same lumps.

Putting this one down to experience. At least I get to buy a new jacket.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 12:03

Oh. Will it work after it's dried or is it too late? No sports shop near me but could order tennis balls on Amazon prime.

i washed my down jacket the other day and thought it was done for, even though it clearly states machine washable, and for some odd reason I have a "down jacket" setting on my machine

anyway it still seemed drippy after the wash so I gave it a high speed spin, dh pegged it on the line and it just hung there in a lump but then the weather took a turn for the worst so I shoved it in the dryer for kill or cure, ...only 40 minutes and on low as I did not want it to shrivel but it looked so much better after that, even though it still wasn't dry so It got a really good shake and shimmy and back in

I think it had 3 lots of 40 mins in the dryer and loads of shaking but it is back to normal and I boil to death just putting it on so the down must still be working!

0DimSumMum0 · 14/03/2019 12:21

I have done this before. What you need to do is wash it, or soak it through again, put it in the dryer then every 5 mins or so take it out and shake it. When I mean shake I mean really shake it and just continue doing it even after you think it is dry and it will come back.

MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 14/03/2019 12:28

You can distribute the feathers with your fingers. Put the coat on a flat surface and pull apart the 2 fabric sides of each section. You can then separate the filing with your fingers.

Imagine how you’d pull the filling apart if it wasn’t encased. You sort of pinch the filling through the casing.

That will help it dry more quickly. Keep doing that, 10 mins In the dryer, then take it out and do the pinchy thing. Repeat.

jeanniebrownhair · 14/03/2019 12:33

I have a few down jackets (including from Uniglo) and I always wash them in the machine at 30 then tumble dry. They've all come out perfectly so I wonder what's gone wrong for OP

olderthanyouthink · 14/03/2019 12:43

I have one that I've never washed (3/4 years old) and I was thinking of washing it but I have no dryer Sad

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 13:31

update:

Put in in the sink with warm water to soak for about an hour then teased the lumps apart which had softened. After 15 minutes (very hard on the arms) I've given it a shake and put it on the line to dry, arrrgh. Should I take it in and put it in the tumble? the feathers are more evenly distributed now but there are still large sections with nothing but material.

OP posts:
MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 14/03/2019 13:43

I’d keep the with teasing then short stints in dryer and repeat.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 14:12

Not sure this jacket wants to be part of my life anymore.

Tumble and teasing hasn't helped at all and it's back to lumps.

Last chance alley. It's back in the sink with warm water soaking. I'll do a bit more teasing and then back on the line - so windy it can do it's own shaking. If that doesn't work it can fuck off.

Thanks to all the hints. I clearly don't have the magic touch!

Tootrousers · 14/03/2019 14:34

I think it’s because you’ve not put any balls in the dryer with it op, it needs something to knock it
About

Beamur · 14/03/2019 14:37

You can get special down cleaner/reviver from outdoor shops - like Millets.
But you need to dry it in a tumble dryer with balls or else it will clump.

bingoitsadingo · 14/03/2019 14:44

Just buy a few tennis balls? Surely it's worth spending a couple of quid if there's a chance it'll save you needing a new coat!

Letsnotargue · 14/03/2019 14:50

The down jacket wash can help as it stops the feathers clumping together. I’ve never seen them as clumped as yours though OP! Hope you can sort it, or at least enjoy shopping for a new one.

WinkysTeatowel · 14/03/2019 14:52

You need to tumble dry it, with tumble drier balls (the wool ones are great for towels for regular use). That will make it all fluffy again, drying it on the line won't work.

reallybadidea · 14/03/2019 14:52

Did you use biological detergent? I think you're supposed to avoid it on things like feathers and silk because it can damage them. Or possibly the spin speed was too high?

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 16:22

I'm like a woman who keeps going back to a man who's no good for me.

Yes I used bio powder. Yes it was on a high spin. Yes it's still on the line. Yes I'm an idiot.

Looks like I'll be purchasing some tennis balls then TennisTennis

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/03/2019 16:23

Also please don't talk about my very clumpy balls 😂

reallybadidea · 14/03/2019 16:31

I'm sorry OP. How annoying.
