Trench coat colours - what to choose?

Help me decide what colour of trench coat to buy. Will be worn now and then for travel to meetings (self employed) but mainly with jeans/trainers. I had just assumed I’d buy the traditional stone colour, but looked at the Hobbs Saskia today, and there are lots of options. I’m quite pale, cool colouring, and while I’m happy to pay a bit for a coat I love, I do want it to last a few years, and not look dated by autumn. What do you think? Only colours I’d def exclude would be black or khaki green.

Would navy be an option for you? It would go with your cool colouring better than stone.

I have a navy one from Banana Republic (god I miss them) and I love it. I think I'm a HOC winter. Pale to v pale skin, medium brown hair, black brows and lashes.

Goes well quite dressed up as well as with jeans etc.

The classic colour stone just looks blah and beige on me.

evilharpy · 06/03/2019 08:42

I have a Saskia in an olive green colour from last season. I find it’s a great colour, seems to work with almost anything and doesn’t wash me out like beige does. It gets lots of compliments.

Also have a navy one from M&S which I like but it’s single breasted which doesn’t suit me as well as the double breasted Saskia.

Palominoo · 06/03/2019 08:45

I'm after a silvery grey one. It will go with everything I wear.

LambChopsMcGee · 06/03/2019 08:58

If anyone likes the one Palominoo linked, but in Navy, Very.co.uk have it for £38.

No I didn't need it. Yes I got one. I love it.

They previously had some other colours so maybe keep an eye on there for the silver Palominoo?

Ratonastick · 06/03/2019 09:36

I have a stone one and a black one. The stone one came first and is beautiful but was completely impractical as I travel by tube and train so it got absolutely filthy within a couple of weeks. The black one is not my personal choice, but reasonably stylish and far more practical. Bit depressing really.

ilovecherries · 06/03/2019 09:44

I like the silver grey colour very much, but I think I’d prefer a more traditional trench coat shape. I’ve thought about navy, but haven’t seen it in the right shape anywhere, plus I think I’d prefer a lighter colour as it will be more a spring through early autumn coat, and my warm winter coat is navy wool.

I'm a coat addict (I blame my DF as he's the same so it must be genetic Wink)

I have the Rains coat that @Palominoo linked to but I have it in glossy dark green and it's fabulous. It's very flattering on but absurdly practical. Rains do some lovely trenches so maybe have a look there OP? (I have black and blue trenches from Rains and a rose one is on the way).

I was curious about the Hobbs Saskia after reading this thread. So I had a look at their website. Am I the only one who thinks it's not very attractive with those big domineering buttons? They stand out too much and cheapen the look (in my opinion!). The Hobbs Lydia looks much nicer to me because it doesn't have the dark buttons.

OP would you consider red? Does red work with your colouring? It's classic but not too humdrum and is a bit more fun. It would work well with jeans and trainers.

ilovecherries · 06/03/2019 09:56

Yes,I would def consider red! Will go and look at the hobbs Lydia as well. Does therains one have a zipper - I can’t quite tell from the pictures? And if it does, does it have strips/padding on the inside to stop the zip rubbing your clothes if the coat is worn open? I have a zipped jacket that shreds jumpers in 5 minutes because there is no protection between the zip and your clothes.

OP posts:
HundredMilesAnHour · 06/03/2019 10:05

Does the rains one have a zipper

No, all my Rains coats have fastened with hidden press studs (rather than buttons). Never had a zipper. Trench coats definitely shouldn't have zippers!

I have this coat arriving today and I'm very excited about it:

I really must stop buying coats but I just can't help myself. Blush

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/03/2019 10:10

Zalando has the silvery grey Rains coats you semi-liked reduced at the moment:

Swiftier · 06/03/2019 10:25

I’m looking for one too and am thinking about red. I wear navy trousers a lot for work so navy trench would be too much and I don’t think the beige colour would suit me (I’m fair skinned). I think red if it suits is a bit brighter/more fun and would go with work wear as well as jeans etc.

Backseatonthebus · 06/03/2019 10:39

I like the shape of this Boden trench coat, and the navy looks a bit paler than some. The lining is a bit out there though!

ilovecherries · 06/03/2019 10:53

I actually sent for that boden one a few weeks back, took one look at the lining and immediately returned it. I thought I might look like a brexit supporter wearing it.

I have a grey one I have had for years and goes with everything, both smart and casual

Palominoo · 06/03/2019 11:12

Not a brand that I bring an old bag would normally wear, but Supdrdry has a nice looking trench coat.
I like the red and the dogtooth which they say is blue but looks grey to me!

ilovecherries · 06/03/2019 11:35

Oh, I like both of these, palominno. Superdry is a brand I’ve never worn, I wonder what the sizing is like? My Seasalt coat and my M&S coats are a 12, but I sometimes need a 14 in places like H&M.

OP posts:
Palominoo · 06/03/2019 11:40

I associate Superdry with young people! Blush

But I really like that trench coat! Grin

I'm thinking that as its a young brand the sizing will be on the smaller size? I might be wrong though.

ilovecherries · 06/03/2019 11:41

Yes, I suspect if I buy a superdry coat I will need to hide it from my student DD or it will be gone forever! Fortunately she’s a size 8-10.

Harumphharagh · 06/03/2019 14:53

I wish I'd bought a straightforward simple, plain beige one when zara used to do them - they keep fannying around with them now!

SpeckledyHen · 06/03/2019 16:37

I searched high and low in the autumn for a trench and really struggled. I loved the Saskia in Khaki but it was too long in length and arms for my 5 ‘ 2 almost size.
I finally struck lucky with a vintage Burberry in a petite fit , honey colour rather than the cold stone for £70 . It’s beautiful.

BubblesBuddy · 06/03/2019 16:55

If you buy a trench coat, buy a classic! So that is either stone or navy. I do actually have an ancient olive one from Burberry. I love that colour. If you buy stone, be prepared to get it cleaned. They do not stay pristine when worn. I think Jaeger do the best classic ones that stay in shape and wear well. M&S has a fairly good navy one right now. Tie belt though. Buckles cost more!

I remember the honey Burberry ones. My other one is a dark stone and my dds one is lighter. They play with the colours a bit!

hippospot · 06/03/2019 17:09

I have three - black, navy and grey. I have winter colouring and would look terrible in beige or khaki. I love mine. The most recent ones is from Esprit (last year) and I see they have a decent selection online now, reasonably priced too. Seriously tempted to buy a royal blue one ...

moosesormeece · 06/03/2019 17:18

I've got the Hobbs one in navy. I love it but do sometimes think it's a bit dark when I wear it with some of my (admittedly dingy) work wardrobe. I think if I bought it again I'd choose a lighter colour.
