Hourglass Ambient powers - are they worth the price tag?

I'm very tempted, but the price is crazy! I wonder if it's all hype...

I have the dim light to set my foundation. It's okay but I dont understand the hype.

PorridgeIsYummy · 03/03/2019 10:15

Thanks! That's interesting. So you don't get that natural, non-sparkly glow everyone raves about?

I think you'll get a lot of responses saying it amazing, I've got one of the palettes and while I like the blusher and bronzer the setting powders are just ok. I won't be repurchasing.

What I would say however is I waited until SpackNK sent me a £20 off voucher and bought the palette then - I think that made it about £50 for six powders (bronzer, 2 blushers, 2 setting powders and a highlighter) I've used it everyday for about a year and I'm only just about to hit pan on one section. I think that makes it decent value, the products aren't bad just not worth the hype (IMO).

Hope that makes sense - feels like a ramble!

I have one of the palettes

www.spacenk.com/uk/en_GB/makeup/sets-palettes/complexion/ambient-lighting-edit-volume-4-MUK200022277.html

And in really like, I'm going to buy one of the powders in the bigger version when it's done. The bronzer in it is really easy to use, I'm super pale and I never go overboard with it. I really like all the powders in it. One (either diffused light or dim light, I can't remember) actually comes out a bit dark for me as a setting powder so I use that as an eyeshadow!

April241 · 03/03/2019 10:24

Checked my palette, it's dim light thats most a tad too dark for me, looks really strange if I use it as a setting powder so I use that at the eyeshadow.

Diffused light is lovely, I'm planning on buying a full size of that.

PorridgeIsYummy · 03/03/2019 10:28

Thanks! What's the effect like as a setting powder?

For Diffused Light, I mean.

I think they’re outrageously expensive - and I’ve now been using them for 3 years because they really are best out there. They’re my “birthday list staple” so DH is beyond happy that I keep asking for them annually 😂

I use the ambient powder to finish (put on last) and it’s like applying an instagram filter to my face. I’ve tried similar products from eve lom, bare minerals and some cheap knockoffs and none of them can compare. I also use the strobe highlight for my dark circles along with a concealer and I think it works much better than touché eclat.

I have one of those multi pack contouring ones too, but most days I can be arsed to “contour” so I use it as a blush and love it.

purpleelk · 03/03/2019 10:31

Can’t be arsed

purpleelk · 03/03/2019 10:41

OP, I use the diffused light one and like I wrote, it’s a complete instagram filter.

I wear bare minerals foundation (either original powder or liquid) and I use their expensive contouring brush to apply. I’ve used my other regular brushes but I find that I use more product, so I stick with their brush instead.

What also makes a huge difference is the primer I use. I have an eve lom and Becca one the Becca definitely gives me a healthier glow (it’s not shimmery once I apply my foundation).

I found this Becca palette at tk maxx for £11 but have yet to use it, so you might keep an eye out for their products as well.

PorridgeIsYummy · 03/03/2019 10:55

Thanks for all that information! To be honest, I don't use so much layering. If I need to use other products to achieve a noticeable effect, then maybe the ambient powders are not for me? I don't tend to use primer, for example, as my skin is quite dry, or even setting powder.

The reason the ambient powders appeal is because I'm after a non-sparkly, subtle glow - but maybe that's only achievable if you have young skin or if you use several other products.

I don't get the hype.

I have a full sized Diffused Light and the Edit 3 palette which as well as the blushers, highlighter, bronzer - also has Dim. Dim is quite dark and makes my face look a bit muddy. The Diffused Light is better and I do reach for it when I am looking a bit meh and it is a slight lifting, not a miraculous transformation. It will take me years to use up and I won't repurchase.

I also have another full size blush, not particularly impressed with that. Ditto, a few of the lip stylo thingys. I went through an Hourglass phase, based mainly on susceptibility as they were being lauded everywhere as miracle products, and whilst they are good quality they were massively overhyped. The hype to have died down a bit now.

(The caution mascara is good though and you can get a travel size if you want to try. But again, not a repurchase for me.)

PorridgeIsYummy · 03/03/2019 11:09

Thanks for your comments! I looks like it's not as good as you hear. You've saved me a few quid!

I have a palette, Ambient Lighting Edit. It's incredible.

I swish the two lighter tones together and dust over my whole face. It's great at setting foundation without sticking or looking powdery and gives a nice glow. I use the bronzer for a bit of contouring. The Diffused Light is the best of the bunch, but mixed with Dim Light is amazing.

Sorry that's not what you want to hear Grin

Elllllle · 03/03/2019 12:01

No OP havent noticed any glow tbh. If anything Ive noticed that using Dim Light as a setting powder makes me look really sweaty in photos which is not a good look

SpamChaudFroid · 03/03/2019 12:07

I thought their mascara was bloody terrible.

Hihellohi · 03/03/2019 12:08

Hi,
I’ve got it too and I don’t get the hype AT ALL.
I only use it coz I have it now so I might as well use it. Expensive!!
I think if you want a glow get either mac strobe cream and mix with your cream or foundation or anastasia glow palettes. Now that is worth the £

purpleelk · 03/03/2019 13:28

I have dry skin too, which is exactly why I need to use a primer Confused. I guess you wanted to hear what you wanted to hear. I definitely now have a lovely glow on my dry ass almost 50 face Wink Hope it helped someone else.

Housewife2010 · 03/03/2019 14:31

I really love me Hourglass powders. I gave several singles and palettes. The diffused light is my favourite powder. It gives a nice natural glow and it lasts for years.

Lumene · 03/03/2019 18:05

For me yes definitely. Why not go into a Space NK or somewhere and get them to try them in you? I did this so I knew it worked for me before shelling out.

Lumene · 03/03/2019 18:05

In you?!? On you would be better!

Lumene · 03/03/2019 18:18

It definitely gives me an Instagram filter effect. I look welland it smooths out my imperfections. I got the ambient lighting edit4 palette. I am pale but sometimes go w bit red and it evens the two extremes out. I hate having my photos taken but am ok with looking at my skin in pictures with this on.

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/03/2019 18:26

They do travel sizes for £20 if you don't want to spend too much OP. I've had the Dim Light one for months now and it still looks barely used.

YesQueen · 03/03/2019 18:41

I'm using this as a dupe and like it. Usually wear ethereal light

I've got the Diffused light. Cant see any effects on my skin at all. Very disappointed.
