Am a southerner who lived up north for quite a few years , am back down and because of the gorgeous weather have worn my sandals.. two comments today .. one work colleague said oh dear do you have bad feet ? My gran has and she wears those kinda shoes Hmm second colleague said nah she's got her Northern shoes on !!!
Really ? That's a thing?
Is there a divide in what's suitable.. btw I'm not changing cos they they may be fugley but sooo comfy !

SteelRiver · 26/02/2019 18:57

I'm a northerner but I've never worn anything like those.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 27/02/2019 07:20

Surely Northern Sandals are clogs with the toes sawn off?

BringMeTea · 27/02/2019 07:42

Oh OP. I do think those teva/merrill type sandals are very unattractive but definitely functional. I suppose they would pass the William Morris test, just. Northern though? nah. That's just your colleague showing their lack of intelligence. Having said all of that, if you work in a garden centre or other outdoorsy environment then it's less comment-worthy. Crack on.

Elephantina · 27/02/2019 07:46

I don't think they look bad, they're functional!

I travelled from South to North yesterday and I didn't see anyone in sandals in Manchester, but I did see a lady in a lovely strappy sundress over leggings at 8am when it was still 6 degrees C.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 27/02/2019 07:53

Those sandals are not northern. They are sensible - in a good way. Foot-shaped and you can walk in them. A surprisingly uncommon combination of attributes in a shoe these days.

But the nail polish? Now that is northern!

Prequelle · 27/02/2019 07:55

As a Wiganer I wouldn't say those are northern shoes ha

notacooldad · 27/02/2019 08:21

Oh they are definitely functional and they never die!!
As I said before mine are older than the teens that take the piss out of them when I wear mine
🤣

Lungelady · 27/02/2019 08:23

They are very practical.
Grin

TheNavigator · 27/02/2019 08:28

They are sensible outdoor sandals so they do look a bit odd if you work in an office - a bit like wearing wellies or walking boots as you stroll along a carpeted corridor between meetings..

It sounds like your colleagues were having a laugh - I have a great laugh with my colleagues so would take that comment in good heart, if you are offended I presume there are underlying issues in your workplace.

Kochicoo · 27/02/2019 08:29

Didn't someone post an article on here recently saying that teva type sandals were going to be the "in" thing this year? You're bang on trend OP!

Kochicoo · 27/02/2019 08:32

www.google.com/amp/s/www.whowhatwear.co.uk/amp/new-fashion-trends-2019

Not quite the same article but there you go, down the bottom of the article😁

NC4Now · 27/02/2019 08:35

They have no idea. We’re all in flip flops up here.

MrsGaryLightbody · 27/02/2019 09:01

Wow thank you for all the response!
In my OP I did say they are ugly.
But I don't care as they are sooooo comfy but a little chilly lol not that I'd admit it after being the topic of conversation.
My work colleagues are a bit stuck as they know I lived up north for years and loved it and a little home sick too but I was a southern lass for 40 years and am down here temporarily.
But I really appreciate all your compliments and critique. Smile
Ps the nail polish was taken off last night and feet are now spring ready !

SlipperOrchid · 27/02/2019 13:29

They are hiking type sandals aren’t they? I don’t like them personally

You ought to have said is rudeness a southern thing?

Your colleagues were being incredibly rude. Who on earth would ask someone if there is something wrong with their feet or say their grandmother wears them. Do you get on with them generally? I’d steer clear of them.

BusterGonad · 27/02/2019 17:19

I agree they are nana sandals and are ugly BUT I'd never say that to you (if I knew you) in real life, well no, I tell a lie, I'd say that to a certain friend as she'd expect me too! 🤣

anniehm · 27/02/2019 17:22

I think I have those, I'm from London

IWouldPreferNotTo · 27/02/2019 17:29

I was expecting some hob nailed boots like these

Apparently my shoes are Northern wtf
sizzledrizz · 27/02/2019 18:02

I have Tevas, live in the South. Love them. Very comfortable. Know a lot of women in the South that wear them. I also like my Birkies. Am originally Northern though

XingMing · 27/02/2019 20:36

I wear something very similar, all summer, to walk the dog every morning. In Cornwall. Not elegant or anything I'd wear "out" but for gardening, walking, beach or general warm weather rural activities, they take quite a lot of beating.

XingMing · 27/02/2019 20:38

Definitely not Northern IMO; isn't it compulsory to wear 4 inch heels north of Watford?

lotusbell · 27/02/2019 21:01

Please, please wear clogs tomorrow. With your flat cap. And a pie for your lunch. Please.

Heartofglass12345 · 27/02/2019 21:20

They look like the kind of sandals people who wear walking boots as their every day shoes lol

Fstar · 27/02/2019 21:36

Tell them to get a life, in Scotland 16 degrees is tops off weather or rather 'taps aff' and sandles or trainers/ gutties are more than acceptable in Feb

userxx · 27/02/2019 22:13

As long as you are comfy, that's all that matters........ but they are not northern. Nope, definitely not.

RebuildingMyLife · 28/02/2019 10:42

That is not a pair of shoes I would see on any of the northerners I know. They tend to be much more glamorous and fashion conscious than southerners.

I get sick of hearing northern comments. I am from up there and reluctantly live in the south. I'm yet to meet anyone who can hold a candle looks or personality wise to the many lovely northerners I know and am related to.
