Next sold me a worn item

I buy from Next a lot, particularly the clearance section. I get that a lot of the items there are returns and that's absolutely fine. I collected a blouse yesterday, opened the bag this morning only to be greeted with the unmistakable aroma of stale perfume and sweat, not horribly, but quite unmistakably. The blouse did not have its original tags and just had that worn once look; it wasn't nice, crisp and pressed. How rank is this?

It’s disgusting and I’d return it, although I know Next is a pain for having to wait 6 weeks for sale items ordered online.

I was shocked the other day when watching a vlogger’s live video when she was unpacking her food shop, running around after her kids etc and someone said “I like your top” and she replied “thanks, I don’t know if I’m keeping it yet, I’ve been cheeky and left the tags in so I can return it.”

I thought that was minging and really went off her. With everything she was doing it would easily have got sweaty and or stained.

PatchworkElmer · 26/02/2019 09:22

Totally rank.

I worked with a woman who bought a dress, wore it to a formal event (dinner and dancing), and returned the next day. Makes me so cross.

hastingsmua1 · 26/02/2019 11:42

Return it, Next will probably offer you a gift card for the inconvenience too.

This happens a lot in the retail industry unfortunately. I am surprised they accepted the return without the tags though.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 26/02/2019 11:52

I once returned a worn item New Look because it was faulty.
A couple of days later I was back in the shop looking for something new. I spotted my top on the rack with all the new ones. You could easily tell it had been through a washing machine compared to all the others.
I took it off and back to the desk pointing out all the details as for why I knew it was mine, even showing the fault which was why I returned it.
The assistant didn't seem fazed until I pointed out to the customer that they were trying to resell a worn item.
She was as horrified as I was.

It makes me question what retailers try to get away with.

MandyFl0ss · 26/02/2019 11:58

Just as I was about to return the blouse I also noticed that the cloth tag that was supposed to show the size had been cut off with scissors. I know this because I have the identical blouse in a smaller size; I had purchased the same in a bigger size for my mum. So someone went to the trouble of cutting the tag with scissors, removing the brand tags (it was Phase Eight) wearing it, putting perfume on, sweating on it and then had the front of returning it. Unbelievable. They said they're going to send me a gift card for £10 which is fine but still...

Unfortunately you get managers who want to mitigate their losses and boost their targets, so they will place faulty items back on sale as normal if they think it’s passable. There’s also inexperienced staff who put returns through when they shouldn’t, or don’t follow the proper protocol for processing faulty returns and keeping these items separate.

calsovip · 26/02/2019 13:03

Completely disgusting. Reminds me of this post I saw on a random forum where this lady was advocating the act of wearing clothes once and returning them in order to "expand your wardrobe at no cost". Absolutely appalling.

BlueJeansNiceTop · 26/02/2019 13:05

Next or Phase 8?

ZigZagZombie · 26/02/2019 13:07

calsovip There was someone on the Money board here the other weeks listing it as a "money saving tip". Hmm

NewYoiker · 26/02/2019 13:13

@BlueJeansNiceTop next sells phase 8 clothes

bakebakebake · 26/02/2019 13:14

I returned some clothes from an online order at New Look. She started hanging them up to go back out while i was on the other side of the desk!

I was returning them as they didn't fit, but i could have quite easily have worn them, she didn't even check them over!

MandyFl0ss · 26/02/2019 13:24

Next or Phase 8?

Phase 8 blouse bought from Next directory

I've had weirdly the opposite, trying to return jeans I'd bought online from gap that were to small same number size but about an inch smaller than another pair I own the guy at the checkout started sniffing them and asking if I'd worn them or I'd washed them. Wouldn't believe me that I'd put them on for 20 seconds to establish they didn't fit and taken them off and put them back in the bag. He wandered off to get someone else to look at them then huffily put through my refund.

Felt really intrusive Confused

Cla9 · 26/02/2019 13:51

This happened to me with River Island before. Smell of perfume and orange foundation marks on the neckline!

MandyFl0ss · 12/03/2019 14:05

I have an update about this. Well , not exactly an update, a new chapter. The thing with the Phase Eight blouse resulted in Next sending me a £10 voucher which is nice, and of course refunding the stinky shirt.

Now today I went to Next to collect a 100% LK Bennett silk dress which was reduced to £117. Except when I got home and opened the bag, what was inside was a nasty 100% polyester blouse from Warehouse. There were no tags on it whatsoever and the little cloth size tag had been cut with scissors. Inside the bag, but without being attached to the dress was an LK Bennett paper tag with details of the original dress I had ordered.

I rang customer services and after a long time talking to someone, they said they needed to look into this and ring me back. After about 20 minutes someone rang me back and asked for a few security details. It then dawned on me that someone had bought the dress and the shirt, kept the dress and returned the shirt but with the tags belonging to the dress, so getting a refund for a £100 item but returning a £10 item.

Of course I am worried they might even think this is me trying it on so from now on I am going to open anything I buy from Next there and then.

Customer services did apologise and said they were sending me £10 voucher, but now I have to go to the shop and return this.

Hope they realise & refund you OP - next time, check your order at the counter before you leave!

olderthanyouthink · 12/03/2019 14:39
Shock
Scattyhattie · 12/03/2019 14:56

Wow some people are cheeky! I don't understand how its not checked over by next before being sent out to a new customer, for you to end up with 2 that aren't perfect suggests its not uncommon. I'm glad you've got something although doesn't make up for the hassle.

I wondered with the phase 8 inner tags being cut if it was one destined to resold as a second/overstock as they do that to do stop returns.

twobambinos · 12/03/2019 15:21

I'm shocked at your update. They'll be able to narrow that down to a particular customer no doubt by searching orders where both items were purchased.
It's annoying having to trek back to the shop tho.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/03/2019 19:22

Funny, I got a dress delivered from Next yesterday- it has no card tags on and it was in a small plastic bag. I just feel that’s been worn and returned.

I ordered another dress which arrived with tags and on a hanger. Interestingly, they are the same dress in different fabrics. The one on the hanger fits, the first one is too small. Makes me think other people found it too small and returned it.

Do Next send dresses in both ways? I don’t normally order online from them.

Thedarklady · 12/03/2019 21:15

[Quote]Reminds me of this post I saw on a random forum where this lady was advocating the act of wearing clothes once and returning them in order to "expand your wardrobe at no cost". Absolutely appalling.

The utter cheek of some people!!

woodhill · 12/03/2019 21:22

Just so dishonest.

I worry about returning stuff I have ordered and not worn just briefly tried on.

Strongbeatsskinny · 12/03/2019 22:22

Why take items all the way home before trying them on. Surely it’s far easier to just try them on in the shops changing room then return them straight away if they fit is a problem.

yorkshirepud44 · 12/03/2019 22:26

It is, but if you're on a short lunch break, like I invariably am when I collect anything, there's no time for getting my kit off.

MandyFl0ss · 12/03/2019 22:30

I've just had a thought, that this has happened with branded stuff: Phase Eight, LK Bennett and Warehouse. I wonder if these brands send their unsaleable items to Next to get rid of in the clearance section...
