Anyone else wondering WTF they're going to wear in Spring / Summer?

Yes, planning ahead. I had a look around the shops last weekend and it was a polyester horror show. What sort of trousers? What kind of tops? Work is smart casual - I'm sorted for Winter but what on earth do you wear when it warms up? I'm 39, size 10-12 and not fond of showing much flesh. Anyone got any pearls of wisdom, or seen anything nice in the shops so far?

What did you enjoy wearing last summer op?

Lottapianos · 19/02/2019 19:25

Not very much Too! The weather was horrendously hot (London). I enjoy cotton trousers and skirts but they are hard to find, almost everything is polyester hell

I wear a lot of viscose summer dresses. I used to try and find cotton but then I watched the Stacey Dooley programme about how bad cotton is for the environment. Viscose isn’t sweaty like polyester so is good for summer. Seems to be pretty readily available too.

WholeL0ttaRosie · 19/02/2019 19:38

Last year I wore linen-mix dresses from Next, they did a version with sleeves and pockets which I loved, plus a sleeveless version.
John Lewis website lets you search by fabric choice, to avoid the polyester shite.

Lottapianos · 19/02/2019 19:41

That's a good call Too. Is viscose breathable then? Loads of viscose around

OP posts:
Tootrousers · 19/02/2019 19:49

Yes it is breathable, it’s made from wood pulp but chemically treated so a semi natural fibre, see here www.contrado.co.uk/blog/what-is-viscose/

Processedpea · 19/02/2019 19:54

Try uniqlo just bought a uv cut cardigan for spring that keeps you cool also nice tops and work trousers

halfwitpicker · 19/02/2019 19:57

It's tough isn't it. Especially for work. I've managed to find some cotton dresses that are mid arm length that I wear for work, its hard to look put together I find in the summer for work.

At the weekends I'm in shorts and give not much of a fuck how I look.

Lottapianos · 20/02/2019 08:03

Thanks Too. I was worried about sweatiness with viscose so always avoided it in the summer

Viscose/cotton shell tops with 3/4 or 1/2 sleeves are great for office wear when it's hot.

Deathraystare · 20/02/2019 09:50

Viscose isn’t sweaty like polyester so is good for summer.

It is for me. As soon as I wear it I get sweaty around the back of the neck and my back. Bloody awful and as there is an absolute mega total obsession in shops for lorry loads of the bloody stuff I am f**ked when clothes shopping.

Particularly annoying having to look on all the labels (some positioned near a security tag ).

championquartz · 20/02/2019 10:46

Smart casula for work here too.
I don't like viscose - like Deathraystare i also find it sweaty. And crease-y and difficult to wash.

I haven't seen the Stacy Dooley programme but I thought viscose was quite nasty for the environment - yes it's wood pulp but is it not very very heavy on the chemical processing side?

Aside from that I'm planning on midi skirts. Nice t-shirts, I have a few shirts/tops that are ok from last year. Cotton trews, (maybe mango), aforementioned shirts/tops, light blazer. Wide leg trousers. Something like these. Tho who knows what size to order, it's H+M. I like the model's sandals too. Hardly work appropriate, unfortunately.
Did a little other-stories shop last week.
This silk shirt, which I will wear on repeat with lots.
This skirt which is so nice on. With the silk shirt it's a bit Celine-esque. Go me.
And this dress altho I might not wear this for work. I'll see.
That's me done for a while.

championquartz · 20/02/2019 10:48

And yes, the dress is viscose and yes it creases like a but but I love it Blush

championquartz · 20/02/2019 10:49

Creases like a bitch

Commuting to London was hell last year but some places that do great natural fibres are Wrap London, Poetry, Woolovers, Pure Collection and Monsoon so worth checking (especially sales) and the Jasper Conran collection in Debenhams has had some lovely cotton dresses. WhoIe mentioned the Next linen blend dresses which I would also recommend and their trousers and tops were great last year. I've stocked up on some cotton shirts and dresses from the Next directory this year so it's worth browsing around.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/02/2019 10:54

I generally find that my summer clothes last for years as they don't get very much wear, so I don't need to buy a new summer wardrobe every year.

In answer to your question. On hot days I wear short sleeved or sleeveless summer dresses. I have several from BHS before they went, a lovely linen dress from Next. On less warm days I tend to wear trousers or jeans with T-shirts. I also wea

You can tell I am not the most stylish person Grin

apparentlyso · 20/02/2019 10:59

I am looking forward to just being able to flash my bare ankles at this stage, I can't imagine hot weather yet!
This year I will mostly be in jeans and T-shirt's, I've lost weight so I will enjoy that simple pleasure or not having to cover my chest area with a scarf etc.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/02/2019 11:10

Last summer was the first year in ages that I felt like I wore summer clothes consistently. Midi-dresses and skirts, culottes, and cropped wide-legged trousers, with t-shirts, were my staples. I’m in Scotland so it was lovely last year, but not unbearable like in London. I hope we get another good year.

Deathraystare · 20/02/2019 11:50

If it is going to be really hot I guess i should wear some floaty skirts (which means wearing 'comfort shorts' underneath or swishy loose trousers. Had a quick look at Next but most of the linen dresses are a mix. Guess which fabric the linen is mixed with. Bet you can't guess. Begins with a V!

Love that green dress 👗

Following with interest! I work in London and commuting was unbearable during the heatwave last summer.

I bought a couple of sleeveless jersey dresses from Boden last summer (I think the style was Melinda) that I wore very frequently. Also the relaxed fit scoop neck cotton tees from Primark with jeans and sandals on the cooler days.

MaudesMum · 20/02/2019 13:38

It's the awkward in between season I always struggle with - when it's too warm for tights and boots and too cold for bare legs and sandals! And some years that can be a lot of the summer. Particularly difficult when I need to look smart. I've bought a nice jacket or two, and will be wearing them with a cotton or linen shirt, and smart-ish slightly cropped trousers. Haven't really solved smart footwear as yet!

Coffeepot72 · 20/02/2019 13:45

I never transition between the seasons very well - I'm the last one wearing winter clothes in spring, and then still seem to be in summer stuff in November!

LoniceraJaponica · 20/02/2019 14:16

I struggle with ankle grazer/cropped trousers. I love the look of them, but In winter it is too cold to expose my ankles, and in summer I find them too warm and prefer to wear dresses. I need it to be at least 21 degrees to not wear socks as my feet feel the cold too easily.

cupofteaandsliceofcake · 20/02/2019 18:13

Yes! Ever since last summer when I seriously struggled I have been very anxious about what to wear this year. Hate polyester and generally viscose and really struggled to find natural fibres. Shapes didn't suit me. I sweat badly over 21 degrees (!) so need a lot of patterned tops. Footwear was a nightmare, I'm carrying an extra stone of weight and am pasty, praying we don't have another heatwave!
