What do you wear to go out?

But not "out out"?. Out in the evening, weekend, food and drinks but to a casual type of place?

I haven't been out for a long time. But am starting to (at least try ) to more. But I keep bottling it as no idea what to wear. Thinking jeans, boots but what sort top? A quick browse of my small town high street made me realise the shops here cater for size 6 12 year olds
For info, I'm 41 and fatter than I should be. Size 14.

Silk tops. Jeans. Boots

JuniperBeer · 13/02/2019 23:09

And blazer. Nice pashmina.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/02/2019 23:40

Thanks, I love the silk top/blazer combo but don't think I can pull it off his fat.

I am going for drinks after work on Friday, is that the type of event you mean? It'll be an early evening thing.

I'm gonna wear skinny jeans, an over size shirt that's black with pink flowers on (H&M) with a few buttons undone so it shows a bit of cleavage and some burgundy knee high boots.

wishingforalotterywin · 13/02/2019 23:48

Size 14 not too fat for blazer and nice top!

Do you have a friend you can take shopping? If your high st no good do you have big supermarkets? Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco all have good tops. I have 2 blazers from Sainsbury's - bargains! I'm 46 and an 18/20

Just get one outfit and then look around and see what others in your area are wearing

SleightOfMind · 13/02/2019 23:56

Are you more self conscious about your bottom or too half?
Find a top that flatters the bits you hate and draws attention to the bits you like, in a colour and fabric you love then frame it with jeans, boots, jacket/blazer.

Size 14 is not noticeable, I’m 8-10 but can easily go to a 14 after Christmas. No one ever sees or remembers the difference.
Sounds like a lovely night out. Have fun!

TakemebacktoClifton · 14/02/2019 00:00

How about a midi/maxi dress? I live in London and a long dress with trainers is all everyone seems to wear around here. If I go into town then I might dress up a little, black skinny jeans, camisole and biker jacket or blazer and a nice pair of heels

AngelaStorm73 · 14/02/2019 00:02

Jeans, nice top, ankle boots or heals
Or
Nice dress (not revealing, grown up) with heals or flats
Little bag (with a strap I can't deal with a clutch or whatever and they're too dressy)
Hair down, blow dryed and in waves with volume (I think straighteners are dying out now? Besides they fry my hair)
Makeup, fairly neutral but with lots of mascara and maybe a bit of lipstick/gloss.
Perfume.
Jewellery either a necklace or dangly earrings.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/02/2019 02:55

Thanks, this is really helpful. I think a big problem is not liking how clothes look on me at the moment. The friend I mentioned looks great, all the time (in that efgortless way) but is very very slim. I struggle with tops as need a bigger size but then they don't fit me properly (I don't have the bigger chest to go with the bigger size, iyswim)
Saying that, the top/blazer look might well get around that problem. I'll have a look in Sainsbury at the weekend when I can leave the children with my mum!

Not would you be able to sew darts in tops that are a little big in some areas? That would give them a more fitted and neat fit.

GemmeFatale · 14/02/2019 11:05

You need a tailor. You know how celebs always look like things just fit perfectly? It’s because they have things tailored to them.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/02/2019 13:15

I just need to lose weight. Which I am doing, lost a stone since new year but still a couple to go. I'm no good at sewing.

I am carrying a lot more than I used to (I'm more a 16 than a 14). My go to's are jeans (black/dark indigo), top long enough to cover bum/belly, boots, nice jacket, standout bag and jewellery.

I have also got some brilliant black pleather leggings from Next as recommended by a work colleague who is the same size so they are definitely worth a try.

JoylessFunSponge · 14/02/2019 13:51

I have unwittingly developed a going out uniform over the last few years.

Am 38, a bit heavier than I'd like to be and carry it mostly in my belly. Boobs and legs are magnificent though. The look I aspire to is vintage/rock chick/sexy but sometimes I stray into fat barmaid/explosion in a Sue Ryder territory but hey that's fine by me 😆.

  • Skinnies (denim or leather).
  • Oversized vintage shirt/blouse - usually animal print/quirky pattern. Top buttons undone, Lace bralette thing over regular bra underneath for a bit of cleavage.
  • Heeled ankle boots.

End result is comfy and feels like 'me'.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2019 14:00

Size 14 isn't generally fat, you will look fine.

Anyway, I tend to wear skinnies also, dark indigo or black, with black suede heeled ankle boots and a nice silk top or blouse. I also occasionally wear leather leggings and a longer loose blouse and said ankle boots.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/02/2019 14:22

Thanks. I'm very lk.ited where I live for shopping, don't want to spend too much at this stage. I got a new pair of black skinnier. Already got so.r nice black ankle boots. Bought a grey silky t shirt top, longish with a low the at the front, it looks quite nice. Thinking sparkly long necklace. I might be way off the mark but it feels and looks ok!

River Island has a nice black blazer, ruched sleeves so it doesn't look like a suit jacket.

DorothyZbornak · 14/02/2019 19:06

Size 6 12 year olds?

I'm a size 6-8 and almost 40. I'm not a pubescent child thanks. Hmm

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/02/2019 19:31

I'm a 12/14 and do feel a bit 'fat' but I also find I'm much more ready to experiment with clothes more now.

Last couple of nights out have been:

skinnies / silk shirt / biker / heeled boots or trainers depending on how casual - if with trainers, I like to roll the jeans up a tiny bit and have fishnets peeping out at the ankle

opaques / tube skirt / loose-ish black top / ankle boots

Prom shape dress / boots / biker

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/02/2019 20:18

@DorothyZbornak I didn't say you were. I said the local shops seem to cater for size 6 12 yr olds, not size 6 adults. Or even size 14 adults.

I've moved away from skinnies as I think they looked dated and now wear straight leg/boy friend jeans rolled up above an ankle boot - either chunky or kitten heel depending on the occasion. William Morris/arty print floaty top or loose silk top french tucked with nice belt. Funky blazer or long leopard print coat depending on weather. Silver jewellery, natural make up, scruffy lob. It works for me.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2019 20:32

Eh, she was clearly saying they were going for the small youth market, not refering to women knocking on forty. I've no idea why you'd think s reference to kids was about you considering your age. Confused

XingMing · 14/02/2019 20:35

I do think your best advice was further up the thread. If you are between sizes but love a garment (tops are easier) then buy the larger size and ask a seamstress to tweak it to fit you perfectly. It's not usually very expensive, and it does make a huge difference. It will (side effect benefit) also make you think ahead about what you need because you'll have to build in the time for the seamstress, so you won't make rushed buys, and it will force you to consider what you want/need and should spend money on. But it will enable you to choose the look and the fit from the High Street and make it look made to measure. Which is one of the secrets of looking rich/polished/chic. You will need a seamstress; your dry cleaner may be the best place to ask.

PlaymobilPirate · 14/02/2019 20:39

Out 2m. I'm a size 14. I'm wearing a little zebra print skirt from Next which is much nicer in real life than on their website and a black sequin top I got in Asda at xmas!!

RockyFlintstone · 14/02/2019 20:44

Oooh I like this idea, not seen it before. Do you wear tights under the jeans or like sock things?

I tend to wear a printed tea dress type thing with flat boots or ballet flats. I can't nail the whole 'skinnies and a nice top' thing at all!
