The White Company - prices are now sky high

Received their latest catalogue today- my eyes my eyes! Their prices.

I have a few TWC items- bathmats, bedding, jumpers etc- mainly bought in sales. I can see barely anything now for under £100.
Even their skincare range which has no 'credibility' as far as I can tell other than nice packaging, is Clarins price.

Amazingly, they were one of the few companies to continue to grow and make an increase in profit last year- we all know why!

I could buy everything they have almost- love the bedding and covers etc- but I just feel they are ripping people off and relying on Sloaney types to buy it all.

Am I alone ?

I never buy anything unless it’s in the sale or I have at least a 15% off code anymore

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 17:14

Not st all. I am foreign and their stuff was already super expensive when I moved here. I walked in there the first time and was a bit wtf? On reflection though I can see why they are successful, their products are exactly the kind of thing the majority of the girls I went school with would mature into. A bit like hush really. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever but not worth the price.

Unfortunately I only like cashmere bed socks from TWC, I've tried loads of other types but I always end up paying loads of money every 6 months.

JinglingHellsBells · 23/01/2019 17:20

They have also stopped their 20% vouchers- 15% is the max it seems.

I agree and their service before Christmas was horrendous.

Schoeny · 24/01/2019 06:46

Their skincare range was developed by Brandon Truaxe, so in theory should be reasonably good (but is obviously a lot more expensive than The Ordinary!)

borntobequiet · 24/01/2019 06:48

They’ve always been too expensive for their quality, I think.

JinglingHellsBells · 24/01/2019 08:00

I've just looked again at heir new catalogue. They do have some lovely stuff, but for example a lamp that might be £100-£150 at John Lewis is £250.
Likewise, their bedspreads and throws are all £250-ish for a double or king size.

Their Santorina bed linen which I know I almost bought years ago for around £70 king size duvet is now £165.

Look at Sheridan if you like their bedding. Usually on sale in house of Fraser

Babygrey7 · 24/01/2019 08:11

I agree, I stoped by their stuff a few years ago!

oinkoinksnort · 24/01/2019 08:21

Someone has kindly just gifted me a £50 voucher for there- the only way I can seem to make the prices feel palatable!

NiteFlights · 24/01/2019 10:09

I’ve bought a few things (not clothes) from them in the past and they are all good quality apart from a couple of bath mats which were rubbish, but their prices are pretty ridiculous now. I always thought if you chose wisely you could get really good quality ‘basics’ from there - I don’t think I’m the type of person they are aiming to sell to though and I don’t like their branding style much. My old WC bedding is holding up really well I must say, but I doubt I will buy again.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 27/01/2019 11:40

I bought some kids pyjamas there before Christmas which were broadly M&S price but 100% cotton, so I was quite pleased with myself. Then they didn't arrive so I foolishly thought I'd contact customer services. The phone queues were three hours I found. I did manage to get it sorted through Twitter in the end (there was an invoicing error on their side) but it took the best part of a day. It seriously put me off.

WineNotTea · 27/01/2019 11:59

I absolutely love TWC but yes their prices are ridiculous these days, I’ve not bought from them for at least a year or so.

themagicamulet · 27/01/2019 12:02

Quality is poor too. I bought children's pyjamas there a few years ago and was very disappointed - seams coming apart etc.

minipie · 27/01/2019 12:04

They have almost constant vouchers available, 15% discount, £10 voucher if you spend over £75 etc. All really short expiry dates though. So imagine hardly anyone pays the headline price. I don’t know why shops operate this model, surely it puts people off.

Try King of Cotton for bedding - lasts better.

Oly4 · 27/01/2019 20:34

I used to love WC. Their jumpers were often a cotton and wool mix and washed beautifully. All under £80. Now a similar jumper is £110 and has some shitty polyester or acrylic or viscose mix in it. Prices have gone up, quality has gone down.
I think John Lewis is nicer for bedding and cheaper.
Even the summer range at WC is eye-watering in price!

XXcstatic · 27/01/2019 20:41

Agree. Also, the customer service is really poor - nowhere near comparable with competitors in the same price range (John Lewis, Boden etc). Recommend Christy towels as an alternative - great quality and better value.

Fusioluxe · 27/01/2019 20:44

I’m a Sloaney type 😀 and actually I’m so over them. They are opposite Peter Jones (John Lewis) in Sloane Square and i always check both stores. The quality is the same or better at PJ (Little White Company stuff shrinks 😡) and there is more choice.

I bought a cashmere cardigan from PJ that was £60 cheaper the White Company and I swear it’s exactly the same!

theharlotletter · 27/01/2019 21:41

They have some lovely eau de toilettes but they barely last a few minutes, even when you drench yourself others can't smell it on you an hour later.

dudsville · 27/01/2019 21:42

I was about to come on too complain about the crappy White Company jumper...oops.

dudsville · 27/01/2019 21:44

Posted too soon. £50 ish in sake. Washed twice and each time had to sew holes that energed in seams!

CalamityJane10 · 27/01/2019 21:46

Only buy from their outlet shop in Bicester, but I think the quality of their bedding is amazing.

Alwayscheerful · 27/01/2019 21:49

Spring jackets are £180/£185, even with 15% off seem v expensive.

GloomyMonday · 27/01/2019 21:57

Agree that they're expensive, can only assume it's so that they can offer regular discounts and sales.

I do really rate their cotton products - I have lots of vests, tops, pyjamas, robes, towels, bedding and they're all lovely quality and wearing/washing well.

I am unimpressed with their wool products. Jumpers and cardigans are insanely overpriced. Even if money is no object why would you pay double what you can buy the same product for elsewhere? They wash and wear horrendously. I must have ten items hanging up looking so scruffy that I can't wear them. I just can't bear to throw them away as they cost £££!
