Nice classic but inexpensive piece of jewelry?

My DM died last year and her affairs have now been settled and I received a small sum. I'd like to have something that would be like a last gift from her but I'm not a big jewelry wearer. I have my wedding/engagement ring, another plain-ish ring and I wear ear-rings but fairly utilitarian ones. I don't really wear necklaces but I do like a bracelet/bangle from time to time.

I want to spend maybe up to about £200 so not a fortune, but want something fairly classic rather than a fashion item.

I know it might be an odd choice for someone who doesn't wear much jewelry, but I want something I can keep and that I can have with me all the time rather than say, an ornament or piece of artwork and I can't think of anything else.

Sorry for your loss, I think buying something you'll always have with you is a great idea.

Would you prefer a ring or a bangle or a pair of earrings?

Georg Jensen's stuff is quite unfussy and utilitarian in style. do you like that kind of thing?

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 22:45

Thank you Jiggins, I'm not sure which to be honest, just hoping to find something that catches my eye.

I think the stuff linked to is lovely but maybe a bit too modern in style. I'm early 50s but quite young I think - 50 is the new 40 and all that :).

I like turquoise colours in terms of stones if any.

It's a bit more than you stated, OP, but do you like this sort of pendant?

Twiggywinkle13 · 19/01/2019 22:47

Sorry for your loss. I have recently bought some beautiful but very plain earrings from j&co jewlery, their prices are very reasonable and they have lots of classic pieces too x

Jiggins · 19/01/2019 22:50

50 is absolutely the new 40!

Are you familiar with Etsy? It's a great place to find things made by craftspeople without the high street/jewelley shop mark up. You can find beautiful handmade stuff. I've lost hours on that website!

Classic pearls
m.tiffany.co.uk/jewelry/earrings/ziegfeld-collection-pearl-earrings-GRP03011/ziegfeld-collection-pearl-earrings-31828627?trackpdp=bg&trackgridpos=1&fromcid=287464&fromgrid=1&gridpos=28%2f0

Only chose Tiffany as an example as a “nice” jeweller will have a nice product but you can get them from Argos upwards depending on whether fresh water or traditional. Also size is a factor in price but I’d go nice gold backing and plain pearl earrings.

Good luck with your search!

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 22:54

That's a lovely colour Hollow I don't mind paying more for the right piece but I'm not sure that's quite "me". Thank you for the suggestion though. It's very hard to pick for someone you don't know and I'm not being very specific.

Thank you Twiggy I'll have a google for them too.

I'll also have a look at some more things on those websites suggested. I didn't think to look at Tiffany or John Lewis!

A little less expensive than your budget but my husband bought me this for my birthday with his and my children's names on and I never take it off, it's casual enough for every day, pretty enough for going out, and I feel like they're always with me

Jiggins · 19/01/2019 22:58

Yes maybe something with your mum's name engraved on it, perhaps on the inside? Or engraved with a favourite phrase of hers.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:00

Oh more replies :)

Yes, I've used Etsy before so that's a good call. I quite like pearls but my DM was very superstitious and said that pearls were bad luck. I'm not of a similar view but it probably wouldn't be appropriate. I still find myself doing all sorts of stuff/avoiding stuff because of her superstitions. More so since she's gone tbh. Life is weird sometimes.

Would you consider a lovely watch?

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:04

That Russian ring necklace is nice, i think with DC names on it would be good but maybe not for this. I didn't ever call her by her given name so having her name on something would feel odd I think and I don't really want something with Mum on.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:06

That's a nice watch. It did cross my mind but I don't really wear a watch. DH bought me one for my 50th so I try to make an effort when we go out to wear it. I'm really hard to buy for (apparently).

OP posts:
BlueUggs · 19/01/2019 23:12

That watch was just an example...
If it was my money, I'd spent it on a nice painting or photograph.

BlueUggs · 19/01/2019 23:14

Or, if you want something with you, what about a nice purse or something you can use like a really great handbag?

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 19/01/2019 23:15

What do you mean by classic?

You can try Monica Vinader or astley clarke. They have bracelets in your budget.

messyhousetidymind · 19/01/2019 23:15

Goldsmiths still have a sale on

MotorcycleMayhem · 19/01/2019 23:16

H Samuel have a big sale on, plus another 10% off at the moment. Well worth a look. High Street shops still sell classic items.

I prefer Ernest Jones, but you do get more for your money elsewhere.

Fusioluxe · 19/01/2019 23:17

Brooch?

Jet, Victorian, can be beautiful and traditional for mourning jewellery (if you don’t find that too morbid).

Fusioluxe · 19/01/2019 23:19

Or a cameo if you wanted something lighter.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:23

I know Blue I probably will get a piece of artwork, I have seen something I like and i'll probably get it but I do want something to have with me, not so much to remember her by, because I have lots of that in my head. I guess a purse doesn't seem permanent enough and I've never been a bag person.

She wasn't well off and my Dad died quite young and he didn't really buy her anything other than a wedding ring as they just didn't have the money. My sisters and I bought her a few bits over the years, most of which she lost between house moves and being in various hospitals and she gave her wedding ring to my eldest sister for safe keeping which is as it should be. There was another ring but I said my other older sister should really have that and when her flat was cleared I really didn't want anything at the time.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:25

By "classic" I suppose I mean something that isn't really a fashion item as I want something I'm going to be happy to look at for the next 30 years or whatever. That probably means going for something quite plain I guess.

BikeRunSki · 19/01/2019 23:28

Links Sweetie bracelet?

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2019 23:33

Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions, I am looking at them all, some of these I hadn't heard of which is what I was looking for, just a shove in the right direction.

I thought about a charm bracelet Bike but I wasn't sure if it was too "now"?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2019 23:39

John Lewis have got lots of sterling silver bracelets. Some of them are lovely but it's hard to suggest particular ones because taste is so personal. It's easy to search for them.
