NC as no one else has hair like mine!

My hair is very fine, thin and wavy with the odd curl. It's a bit like children's hair. It's not in good condition because I really have no choice but to straighten it. It's quite fluffy. It gets fuzzy and wavier in damp or humid conditions.

I've had variations on a bob for so long. It comes to a little below the ear but is very thin towards the ends. I've also had it very short - always with some length on top and never as a pixie cut.

Has anyone got any ideas what I can do with it? Hairdressers don't seem to help. I'm so bored and fed up with it.

I have hair like yours. I wear it shoulder length as it curls better then. It goes frizzy if it's too short.

It's very frustrating to have thin hair though I really envy women with lovely thick hair!

Hairandnow · 17/01/2019 09:56

I don't think your hair is the same! Mine might just about grow to my shoulders but there would be nothing of it. It definitely wouldn't even grow any longer than that. I had it to my shoulders when I was younger but always wore it up in a tiny bun. People laughed when they saw what it was like down. It's not wavy in a way I could wear it wavy. It doesn't actually hold waves. It just waves and curls a bit if it gets wet but is too light to hang straight naturally when dried. It is very much like toddler hair.

Picture?

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 17/01/2019 10:06

Have you tried the curly girl method?

(Sorry if you've tried that before, I know it's frustrating - my friend has hair exactly like yours and gets deeply irritated with me saying "have you tried...?")

Hairandnow · 17/01/2019 10:26

I'll try and upload something in a bit.

I agree it is very fine op. I think the last picture looks best but cutting it a bit shorter so there was a nice blunt end would be better and tucked behind your ear. It looks like the longer it gets, the wispier it gets.

Would you go back to trying it up and use fake ponytail for everyday use and try clip in extensions for special occasions?

wineymummy · 17/01/2019 14:37

Go pixie cut if you've never tried it, very short is the only way to make very fine hair look healthy IMO. My hair is also fine (not as fine as yours though) and wavy/curly. I have loosely been doing Cirly Girl which has hugely improved its condition. When I had it short short it looked good, I thought it would curl off my head at weird angles but it didn't. I often wish I'd kept it short but couldn't keep up with the regular hair cuts and it kept growing into a mullet.

RatherBeRiding · 17/01/2019 14:48

Honestly with such fine hair you might have to bite the bullet and go full-on pixie. Find a really good hairdresser though - it needs a good stylist.

I have very fine hair too and it's pants. Has got worse now I'm in my 40s too. I started taking hair / skin / nails supplements about a year ago and also rubbing castor oil into my scalp and / or coconut oil into the ends (gently) then leaving overnight before washing out the following day. And blow drying very gently. (And only washing my hair twice a week). Couldn't tell you which of those measures has helped - possibly them all combined - but after about 3 months I started seeing an improvement.

Katerinablum66 · 17/01/2019 16:27

Have you had it coloured a lot ? It looks over processed from highlights or lightening to me and then snapped off due to the hair being so weak and brittle. I’m not a hairdresser but it looks pretty much how mine did a couple of years ago after a couple of disastrous visits to a new hairdresser. I have similarly fine hair. To conceal the encroaching grey I had some cheap caramel highlights put in, then a few months later some peroxide ones. It was lovely at first but after a few months the ends were fluffy and ragged, a bit like yours to be honest. Loads of it snapped off so I ended up having it cut into a pixie. It’s now growing out but in much better condition.

Hairandnow · 17/01/2019 16:39

This picture was a few years ago when it was shorter. It was very difficult to manage in damp conditions.

I'm in my 40s. I've also been taking supplements. I might have to try oils. I wash it every day though. I always have. I don't think I can get away with not washing it.

I put some colour on nearly a year ago but it's not drastically different to how it looks when it's natural. It's always been wispy when long, except during and after pregnancy.

The problem is that when my hair is very short, it curls. I'm worried that a pixie would be problematic for that reason. That's why I've had it short before but kept some length on top so I could straighten it. It's too fine for an undercut.

The ends are very bad, which is why I need a cut. That does blunt it off a bit bit it's not long until it's wispy again.

I think it looks. Nice in those pics. I have very thick hair but if I'm out in damp weather or even when I wake up I have mad hair that goes in horrible waves and no style to it, try a really good heat protection spray I find they can help with making hair stay smoother looking

wineymummy · 17/01/2019 17:19

I think if it was short enough it wouldn't look curly on your head. I do think the short cut is nicer than your current cut and even shorter would be more manageable. I dare you, it's only hair, isn't great at the moment so you've nothing to lose. And if it's short enough, you could easily cover it with a wig of it all goes horribly wrongGrin

Katerinablum66 · 17/01/2019 17:22

Op it looks considerably thicker and in better condition in the later photos with it short. I’m aware that the texture of mine has changed since I hit fifty 2 years ago ... maybe it’s hormonal ? Not sure how far into your 40s you are but maybe it’s peri menopausal ?

Bloomburger · 17/01/2019 17:27

Don't use oils on thin hair. It weighs it down and makes it look worse.

Redken Extreme Shampoo and their extreme leave in conditioner will stop the breakages, use a tangle tamer for wet hair to comb it after washing and use a volumising powder which won't weigh it down.

TodoDoingDone · 17/01/2019 17:31

I really like it shorter too. Could you go back to that style, or has the texture and thickness changed? I'm in my late 40s and my hair has changed lots in last couple of years. It looks like your face shape would suit a pixie cut!

SherlockHolmes · 17/01/2019 17:37

I've got thin wavyish hair and recently did a keratin straightener at home (Brazilian blow dry).

My hair now doesn't frizz but stays straight. It's miraculous. Lots of threads about it on here. Might work well if you are thinking of having it short as you won't need to straighten it and cause more damage.
