I want to try shampoo bars, but I don't know which ones work.
I have a sensitive scalp and oily hair, so if anyone could recommend a suitable shampoo bar please?

I also want to replace my plastic toothbrushes with more eco friendly ones. Are bamboo toothbrushes the way to go?

And finally, washable sanpro? I don't fancy trying a mooncup, but am thinking of buying a washable pad a month (can't afford a whole set in one go) how many pads would I need a day on heavy flow? And what brand?

Budget isn't massive, I tend to buy own brand for all these, so can't really buy anything that going to be much more expensive, although I understand the alternatives do tend to be more costly.
Thanks for any recommendations.

Re. Toothbrush, I didn't get on with bamboo ones but use one with a small replaceable head. I think the brand is Yaweco.

Swiftier · 16/01/2019 16:51

Lush have lots of shampoo and conditioner bars. And other solid products if you want to reduce plastic - like solid shower gels and moisturiser bars.

FWIW I 100% recommend the Mooncup.

Jens303 · 16/01/2019 16:54

Lush are great, I recently converted to one of their shampoo bars - go into the store & one of the helpful staff will be able to match one with your hair type.

SnugglySnerd · 16/01/2019 16:57

I agree with Lush. They do solid shampoos/bubble baths and even deodorant. They last for ages.

I'd like to know where I can get eye shadow and blusher in non-plastic cases.

Oops, posted too soon!

I use the Coconut and Lime one - my hair is long, dry and tangly but I don't need conditioner after using this! :)

MrsRubyMonday · 17/01/2019 21:18

I bought washable pads on Amazon, just as good as the commonly mentioned brands and way less expensive. I think I bought a set of 6 for about £20. I like the long rectangular ones, rather than the rounded ones, but they do sample packs so you can try out different shapes and see what works for you. My periods are heavy and I never need more than 4 a day, if it's showing no signs of slowing I put them in the wash after my evening shower with my towel and they dry overnight no problem.

CherryBlossom23 · 17/01/2019 21:22

Lush shampoo bars are fab but they use palm oil so still not great for the environment. I've just started using a shampoo bar from Friendly Soap that is looking promising. It's 100% natural so takes a while for your hair to adjust to it but my hair is definitely softer and more manageable since I began using it.

PerditaNitt · 17/01/2019 21:55

I like the Lush shampoo bars - they are pricey but last about 2-3 months, so not too bad. Montalbano works for me - I have oily roots and it has lemon in it which leaves my hair nice and clean and shiny.

I’m tempted to try the brand mentioned by Cherry - I like the idea of going palm oil free.

StickItUpYaJumpa · 17/01/2019 22:35

Beauty kubes shampoo is rather nice. :)
100% recommend a cup.

TheHoundsofLove · 18/01/2019 05:53

I've been using washable pads for a couple of months now and absolutely love them. I've got the bamboo and charcoal ones from Cheeky Wipes - they're way more absorbent than any disposable pad I've ever tried so I would also say that you'd need no more than 4 a day.

MadauntofA · 18/01/2019 06:21

The Juniper shampoo bar from Lush is amazing - I bought it as I wanted to try shampoo bars after being converted to soap from shower gel. My v sensitive and greasy (need to wash every day) scalp loves it, and my hair has never been so shiny and not greasy after 1 day! I promise I don't work for LushGrin

Ouch44 · 18/01/2019 07:10

Join the Journey to zero waste group on Facebook loads of ideas on there and recommendations for less plastic/ plastic free products.

I can't find a shampoo bar that works on my hair (v fine thick hair) so I buy a litre size bottle of Aveda. It lasted me and my DD almost a year.

The men in the house use Primal Suds shampoo bars which they love. I refuse to shop in Lush anymore. Primal suds cane packaged just in cardboard.

hugoagogo · 18/01/2019 08:38

Crikey that primal suds website is off the charts, but I am intrigued.
I am working my way through two shampoo bars from bomb, both very nice and avoiding the lush.

Booksandpens · 18/01/2019 13:26

I haven't got a lush near me, but I'll have a look when I go by next time. I think I'll try the primal suds ones first then the rockways one. Thanks for the recommendations!,

MrsRubyMonday, do you remember the brand of washable pads you bought, they sound much more in my price range

Thedevilinareddress what was the issue with the bamboo toothbrushes?

Which shampoo bars from Lush have palm oil @CherryBlossom23 ?

See uk.lush.com/article/does-lush-use-palm-oil ... I wouldn’t rule out Lush but I’m not sure what shampoo bars are palm oil free so would be worth checking.

CherryBlossom23 · 18/01/2019 14:41

I'm not entirely sure which ones Swiftier, I only ever used Seanik in the past but most of their shampoo bars contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate (that's what makes it lather) so I would guess all of them! Good to know it's derivitates as opposed to straight palm oil but I still can't support that.

thedevilinablackdress · 18/01/2019 14:42

They made me feel a bit sick (not usually a sensitive flower!). Probably didn't help that I went the full no-plastic and got one with boar bristles.

Booksandpens · 18/01/2019 14:48

Thedevil sorry, just seen I'd changed your dress colour!
Oh yes, I don't know if I could use the boar one... But the ones with nylon are meant to have the bristles pulled out before recycling.

Thanks @CherryBlossom23 might ask for info next time I’m in store. It’s so difficult to avoid palm oil, hope more places stop using it. It seems to be in everything!

Happycow · 18/01/2019 15:19

The Wild & Sage rosemary and lavendar shampoo is lovely, if a bit drying for my very fine hair.

Im on the lookout for a decent solid conditioner though- the one i have is so greasy after the merest wipe on my hair, my hair is like rats tails after about 6hrs Hmm

Happycow · 18/01/2019 15:21

An no palm oil or SLS in that shampoo either

Happycow · 18/01/2019 15:23

I have tried bamboo toothbrushes but the bristles are all the same length which meant my teeth never felt properly clean (as well as the bamboo bit 'dragging'on the inside of my cheek a bit).

When oral B do a cross-action bristle pattern on a bamboo handle ill gladly swap!

MadauntofA · 18/01/2019 15:26

Can I ask for those who use shampoo without sodium Laurel sulphate, how easy is it to spread around your hair to clean it all without the suds? I bought a shampoo bar from our local market, didn't sud at all and despite spending ages running it through thoroughly, my hair was so greasy

Happycow · 18/01/2019 16:07

@madauntofa no problems here, lathers nicely but not as much as regular shampoo. Rinces out so my hair is almost squeaky clean.
