Comfortable but stylish for after abdominal surgery

I tend to live in jeans, but will be having a hysterectomy in a couple of weeks so need something softer and more relaxed around the hip/tummy region. I'm 5'9" with a 34" leg, so getting things to fit generally is a ballache. I'd like some joggers but can't find any long enough that are soft. Do you think dresses/tights are the way to go? Bit clueless really.

Hush joggers are great. extra long ones!

Hello Giss! I found the most comfort in long dresses and kaftans, like wafting around in a full-length nightie all the time. I bought some really lovely ones in soft fabrics (silks, soft cottons), gorgeous colours, groovy prints. So even if you're feeling like shit you look fabulous. I also had my hair done - really good cut and conditioning treatment - a day or two before I went in.

Definitely no tights, and only the softest of pants (tip - men's soft cotton boxers are great). Go 'clean eating' if you can in the run-up to the op, and during recovery. It makes a big difference. Good luck!

I loved a jumpsuit after abdo surgery. And really really high M&S pants!

SuperstarDJ · 09/01/2019 10:25

Hush Morgan joggers are v soft on the inside but they’re all OOS and I don’t think they’d be long enough for you. When recovering from a csection I lived in high waisted leggings and jersey tapered bottoms from M&S and Next. None are soft and fleecy but they did the job. Also smarter look check joggers - these were from M&S and they’re OOS online but you could probably get similar in store still and they come in longer length.

Comfort won overstyle and I’ll be glad to get rid of the leggings. The only thing now, 7 weeks later, that is stopping me from wearing my ‘normal’ clothes is excess weight rather than the scar/pain.

Yes to big pants!

GissASquizz · 09/01/2019 11:27

I've bought some giant granny pants practically to my armpits. Gorgeous.

What about leggings/oversize jumpers?

Leggings and oversized jumpers sound perfect, but you’ll need high waisted ones or ones with a soft top.

hellhasahancart · 09/01/2019 11:53

I had a couple of pairs of MAMA leggings from H&M for casual dressing with long tops/jumpers. They can fold up and down so a really good if you have a horizontal scar. For smarter I did try to wear jumpsuits but the swelling does not look great to be honest so I stuck with layers or loose dresses.

Invaluable advice that was given to me is to remember slip on footwear. Something easy to get your feet into for hospital (with a decent non-slip sole) and whatever you would wear normally for at home but no need to pull on as this is an issue for a while. Good luck! Flowers

I found high waisted yoga pants very comfortable after having Laparoscopies when I was very swollen for the first few days, I got mine from TK Maxx, in black & worn with smart tops they looked good enough to go out for lunch in, I often wore a long cardigan with them & ballet flats.

Ellapaella · 09/01/2019 12:07

Hush Harems - super comfy and have a high waist band.

DontFundHate · 09/01/2019 13:02

Leggings, jeggings, maybe a size bigger so that they aren't too tight?

ArkAtEee · 09/01/2019 13:15

Would suggest hold ups rather than tights. Maternity leggings are comfortable if you can pick a pair up cheaply.

ilovecherries · 09/01/2019 13:31

Not cheap, but the Me&Em trousers with the fold over waist. They will def be long enough for you - you may even need to take a hem up a little. The fold over waist is very soft and non-restrictive (no elastic as such, just the elastane in the fabric) yet at the same time, gives a sense of support and protection as it’s so thick.

SuperstarDJ · 09/01/2019 14:32

Black denim dungarees were handy for my post-op recovery. Mine were maternity ones from JoJo but H&M, Topshop or ASOS normally sell non-maternity ones.

Lettherebelight · 09/01/2019 17:50

I second the hush harems with foldover waist. I couldn't have worn tights but soft leggings were OK. Good luck

totallyliterally · 09/01/2019 17:55

Hush harems or white company joggers. Both super soft

MoltonSilver · 09/01/2019 19:14

Is it a full abdominal hysterectomy or keyhole?

MoltonSilver · 09/01/2019 19:16

I'm only asking because it makes a difference where the incisions are.

Conseulabananahammock · 09/01/2019 19:17

Placemarking as my hysterectomy is also in a few weeks!

wizzywig · 09/01/2019 19:19

Maternity joggers? Hope the surgery goes well

GissASquizz · 09/01/2019 19:49

Full abdominal with a transverse incision. Joy.

FannyBurneyUndertheknife · 09/01/2019 19:56

Watching. As per my name, I'm having the full abdominal (with horizontal scar) in 2 weeks.

Planning to wear pants the size of Billy Smart's Big Top; Sainsbury's thick leggings with high waist, 2 cord dress/tunic things from Boden. Some slightly less leggingy high waisted stretchy black trousers. Jumpers, Slippers. Lipstick.

messyhousetidymind · 09/01/2019 20:05

How about maternity leggings under dresses/tunics?

justilou1 · 13/01/2019 03:41

Yoga pants are good. I had mine done through my Caesarian scar, so my wound was just above my pelvic bone. After the first week, I found firm tights rather comforting as everything felt rather “loose” internally. The wide-banded, high-waisted ones, of course- because they were nowhere near my wound. If you have it done laparoscopically, you will have smaller wounds and you will feel most of it around your belly button. I definitely recommend slip-on shoes for the first week, but honestly, I was up and around very quickly after the surgery. I can honestly say it was only painful the first day. The next few were uncomfortable. Just walk as soon as you can. It really helps you recover faster.
