Moisturiser - is it worth the splurge

Laurasimone · 06/01/2019 21:06

Can anyone recommend a great moisturiser and eye cream that actually improves skin in terms of fine lines etc.
Has anyone used la mer? Seems to get rave editorial reviews but is really expensive.
Have normal to dry skin.
Would love to hear any suggestions

I'm seeing good results with The Ordinary's Marula Oil and Buffet, plus Nip+Fab's Hyaluronic serum.
I exfoliate once a week with Nip+Fab Glycolic pads.

MitziK · 06/01/2019 21:21

I get the best results with Cold Cream, taken off with a warm flannel. Which is quite annoying, considering the amount I've spent on moisturisers in my time.

NigellasGuest · 06/01/2019 21:31

My insane DD bought some Mer at the airport a while back but says it wasn't all that. Clinique Moisture Surge might suit you?

AFistfulofDolores1 · 06/01/2019 21:40

Dermalogica's Skin Smoothing Cream is really, really good.

Laurasimone · 07/01/2019 07:14

Thanks all x

No it’s not worth the money imo. The only scientific things to help with anti aging are retinoids and AHAs. Sunscreen and Vit c prevent sun damage (with contributes a lot to aging).

Moisturiser is meant to be an emollient and partial occlusive.

You are better off getting a decent basic moisturiser and sunscreen but adding in anti aging products to your regimen.

I have a prescription one that is excellent. Fought my dermatologist tooth and nail for it and it was well worth it. Will never use anything else ever again.

Mulberryandthyme · 07/01/2019 07:31

I've used Clinique moisture surge for years. However, have recently been using Lidl range of skin stuff and find it just as good.

Spagyetti · 07/01/2019 07:38

Mulberry is the Lidl stuff hypoallergenic?

anniehm · 07/01/2019 07:42

I use L'Oréal having tried lots which were many times the price. It's got factor 25spf which is the most important thing we can do to prevent lines.

Lumene · 07/01/2019 08:43

Ooh what’s in it knitted? And why did you have to fight for it?

CrazySheepLady · 07/01/2019 10:56

I've been using a hydrating serum, which includes hyaluronic acid, for about 5 weeks now and I've noticed quite a difference in my skin. It feels so much more hydrated, less tight and looks less prune-like in texture. I use it all over my face, including under my eyes, and then use a moisturiser over the top. I've noticed that my lines are softer and have especially seen a difference in the lines from my nose to the corners of my mouth.

It's by Kate Somerville and is called DermalQuench Liquid Lift. It's pretty expensive, though, at £80. I was given it as a gift and I'll have to save up a bit for when this bottle runs out as I like it so much.

Mulberryandthyme · 07/01/2019 14:18

Spagyetti - it doesn't say it is, however I am prone to eczema on my face, and it's not set anything off. Certainly worth a try for the three quid or so cost.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 07/01/2019 14:21

Moisturiser, no.
Serums and treatments, yes.
You also need an spf separate from your moisturiser and foundation as no cream containing an spf will ever be applied evenly enough or thickly enough for the spf to work.

milleniumhandandprawn · 07/01/2019 14:25

I've just started using the oil of Olay provital night cream. It says that the target age group is 45-55 (and I'm 35) but it seems to be working on my fine lines. I'm trialing it for a month - only 5 days in so far.

It's more than my usual one (£11 for a smallish jar) but oddly if something costs more, I'm more likely to remember to use it!

DeRigueurMortis · 07/01/2019 14:42

I've used la mer.

It wasn't anything to write home about.

It's very thick.

Tbh it reminded me of ponds cold cream that my grandma used to use!

My current favourite (and I've tried loads at all sorts of price points ) is the M&S ultimate sleep cream. Failing that I like Astral - yes the cheap as chips cream in a blue pot.

I used to spend a fortune hunting for the holy grail of moisturisers and frankly came to the conclusion that upwards of £25 is a waste of money and arguably even that's generous.

I have dry skin and both M&S and astral are perfect for me even daytime use and much better than la mer.

You can't get rid of wrinkles once you have them.

The best you can do is plump your skin out using cosmetic products or fillers.

I used to use Clinique but swapped to Olay 3 point Regenerist (£12 ish Amazon) and like it- it's got quite a bit of science behind it in terms of anti oxidants.

I have also used SPF 25-40 since I was 36. I am now early 60s and have no wrinkles at all. I use spf 40 /50 every single day and don't have lie-in-the-sun hols.

Sunlight is what damages skin.

You need a good spf daily, and good food- which means good fats found in nuts, oily fish and avocado.

BusterGonad · 07/01/2019 15:49

Op google the daily mail Nivea vs La Mer. It's very interesting. They trial each in separate sides of the face.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 07/01/2019 18:43

Nope. The ONLY thing that’s made a difference to my skin is the NuFace Mini. Has literally given me something like cheekbones again and generally smoothed my skin (no 11’s have reduced too!).

I now use Aveeno night and day. The Colloidal Oats Cream not the lotion. Very “plumping”.

Delatron · 07/01/2019 19:39

Retinol/Retin A has been scientifically proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. You don’t need to spend lots of money though.

I don’t even use moisturiser. I use serums then spf on the day and retinol serum at night.

Also loving the Nuface toning device.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 07/01/2019 19:41

Delatron NuFace is bloody brill, isn’t it?

Delatron · 07/01/2019 21:13

It’s brilliant AuntyJackies It’s like having a mini facelift every morning. I love it!

Laurasimone · 08/01/2019 06:44

Delatron -what serums would you recommend?
I always wear sunscreen so got that covered. No actual wrinkles just fine lines etc.

I was given a bottle of dermalogica's biolumin-c serum for christmas. After a week my skin felt so lovely and looked much smoother and brighter. Unfortunately, when I looked it up it costs around £80, so I won't be re-purchasing as that amount of money is madness (but am very grateful for the present). It has really helped my skin, though. Those red marks that hang around for ages after a big spot go really quickly too when using this serum. Wish it was cheaper...

AliciaMayEmory · 08/01/2019 07:20

Oh, also I got a sample of Polaar 'Nuit Polar' night cream in a birch box, which is really nice and has also helped my skin look more plump hydrated and hasn't given me spots like other night creams do. I'll definitely be buying that one again. Skin care is so subjective, though. One person's glowing skin is another's spotty nightmare! (I'm 42, by the way, so getting fine lines and losing tone, but still getting hormonal chin spots.)
