How would you describe your own personal style?

Mine is a cross between a witch in Harry Potter and an early Noughties rock chick (depending on my mood.) It's either long bell sleeved tops, long swishy skirts and pointy toed ankle boots, or band t-shirts, knee length skirts, stripy socks and combat boots. A strange combination! In the summer I sometimes dress in an almost regency style, as I have some summer dresses that fit that look. Smile

OK this will make me sound poncey and twittish but a month or so ago a poster suggested an ‘off duty ballerina’ look for me. And it’s really worked and help me work out a style that suits me - and as a result less I spend less on fewer things overall, but on higher quality clothes.

At home I go for skinny jeans, wrap tops, cashmere and delicate jewellery. I combine greys, pale pink, navy and other neutrals.

At work I try to adapt it by keeping the ODB look but with more ‘bite’. Quite sharp tailoring with some draping going on to soften it overall. Same colour palette.

Crunchy 70s pottery teacher.

GobblersKnob · 06/01/2019 12:34

Bohemian, eclectic, eccentric, messy.

WhatWouldPennyDo · 06/01/2019 12:40

Work - feminine silhouette, lots of silk, channelling a bit of Grace Kelly with my hair and make up. Elegant shoes. It's my version of a uniform and means I don't have to think much about what goes with what.

Home - cigarette pants or skinny jeans, cashmere jumpers with layered tops underneath, leather jacket or cocoon coat, big hair.

Clothes and shoes are my biggest splurge each month while I build up a decent capsule wardrobe.

WaterlooElephant · 06/01/2019 12:42

Jeans. Dressed up or down! But...Jean's and Skechers, mostly.

crosser62 · 06/01/2019 12:45

Cheep, I rarely buy new clothes for me, when I do it’s a charity shop item.
Old as all my clothes I’ve had for years.
Scruffy, my winter coat has holes under the arms, had it 12 years.
And plain. I don’t own anything glamorous or naice.
I used to be trendy, modern and loved clothes, unfortunately lifegpt in the way and now as long as I’m warm and comfy I’m not bothered.

umpteennamechanges · 06/01/2019 12:53

Aim for: Feminine, glamorous, classically stylish

Reality: Overweight, harassed woman in leggings does supermarket shopping

Basically I've let myself go, have lots of lovely clothes but usually can't be arsed to do more than scrape hair back and chuck on leggings and some kind of tunic . My leggings usually have one or two holes in from cat claws.

I used to manage my aim when I was single!

ichifanny · 06/01/2019 12:55

Nineties indie inspired with a bit of Scandinavian minimalism thrown in . Pinafores lots of black , dungarees , dr martens , platform trainers , slouchy tops , oversized dresses , coloured tights . Scarves statement necklaces .

TheWombat · 06/01/2019 13:25

Umpteen I have the cat holes in things too! and hair Sadly I have found trying to pass it off as ‘lace’ rather ineffective...

ThePortugueseTart · 06/01/2019 13:37

Not sure!
Work: Probably preppy. fitted shirts buttoned up to the neck, slim fit (smart) jeans, skinny fit cashmere jumpers, tweed jacket and brogues.
Weekend: Possibly classic. Slim jeans, pretty highneck blouses, fitted sweaters/sweatshirts, parka and trainers or heeled ankle boots.
Out: Jersey dresses from Warehouse / Oasis, wool coat, heels

ApolloandDaphne · 06/01/2019 13:39

I think i would go with mad dog lady. My vibe is wellies, mud and a Labrador!

FuzzyShadowChatter · 06/01/2019 14:01

Comfy layers: loose long skirts with leggings and boots that are half to keep the skirts off the floor, loose shirts with even looser overshirts or fleeces. Hair a frizzy mess that I try to keep pulled back and out of the way.

I've no idea what I'm aiming for, I think I end up very boxy. I think part of me is just so used to my body constantly changing after ten years of being pregnant and/or breastfeeding and then into early menopause that I've just gone for the easiest road of loose and elastic. I've kinda decided to update my fraying wardrobe later this year after I hopefully gain a bit more muscle from training, but I'm not sure - I always seem to come back to layers and have no idea what I'm doing.

Snog · 06/01/2019 14:58

Wholesome

Pearlgrey1 · 06/01/2019 15:15

@TheWombat I love the idea of odd duty ballerina style

PartyOnGarth · 06/01/2019 15:26

@ichifanny we have the same style, I recently gave up on heels and now wear dm's or trainers with dresses/pinafores/skirts. Very rarely wear jeans or trousers. As I'm getting older I'm attempting to build up a capsule wardrobe of good quality, ethically made clothes that will last rather than fast fashion.

dudsville · 06/01/2019 15:30

My look is" far too easy, thrown on". I need to get dressed in 3 min. I have clothes that fit and are in good condition and that mostly go together with everything else and suit my colouring... but essentially i need to be able to dress quickly so i don't have time for creativity!

ichifanny · 06/01/2019 16:33

Exactly that @partyongarth I love Monki , papu stories , Lucy and yak try to buy from smaller sustainable companies if possible and buy classic items but I love colour and pattern too it’s like a more grown up version of my wackier younger days 😀

Galvantula · 06/01/2019 16:37

Work... Steel toe cap boots and hi-vis vest. Hmm

The rest of the time, jeans DMs/trainers/converse. Comfortable tops.

Dresses worn max 1 maybe 2 X per year.

DitzyPrints · 06/01/2019 16:39

Toyah from coronation street has a scarily similar style to me- printed wrap dresses, lots of prints, colours big scarves and satchel bags.

Oldraver · 06/01/2019 17:25

Like I have fallen out of a Joe Browns catalogue but 30 years older than the models

Kemer2018 · 06/01/2019 17:34

Vivienne Westwood after losing a fight with a rotovator.
Or black baggy top with black baggy trousers with some odd detail. With sketcher knock-offs.
I cycle....and you can tell.

Sigh81 · 06/01/2019 18:15

Just asked DH and he said "vintage, dramatic and elegant" which I will take. I would add "usually overdressed but fuckit, life is short".

I have an hourglass figure which looks best in sleek 19 40s/50s vintage (with modern makeup, hair and accessories)

Work: midi pencil skirts, blouses, capes, nipped in jackets and waists. Sometimes cropped trousers with blazers and blouse.

Casual: midi skirts and boots; jumper dresses and boots; high waisted jeans and shorts knotted at the waist; long pencil skirts and a polo.

Out: draped, slinky (I love a bit of slink) cocktail dresses from the 40s and 50s with embroidered brocade coats.

What I wear is often figure hugging/emphasises my waist but usually covers a lot of skin (midi skirt lengths, polonecks, long sleeves).

FloofyDoof · 06/01/2019 18:26

Mid 40s shortarse ex goth, wearing not quite pyjamas is probably how to best describe my "style".

I wear black, grey and the odd white /cream top almost exclusively (I wore a khaki dress the other day and felt a bit weird all day). I like comfy Jersey trousers wide or tapered leg, longish tops, long line cardigans and jumpers, long shirts with leggings, tunic dresses with thick tights etc. I like comfortable but not scruffy, and I avoid polyester type fabrics. I don't do frills, or lace or floweriness. Don't really care about fashion, just try not to look a total mess really.

I can't wear heels any more due to back and ankle issues so it's converse, DMs, and nice flat shoes. I have waaay too many shoes even without them, but I still miss my 4 inch heels.

AnnabelleLecter · 06/01/2019 18:47

A mixture of Preppy/Rock chick.
Nice subtle but interesting details like buttons, linings, cuffs and pretty collars and really well fitting with a dollop of leather, denim, studs, coated jeans, biker jackets and boots thrown in for good measure.
Also lots of dark t-shirts, skinny jeans, fitted shirts, blazer and short skirts.
Nothing baggy or patterns or too over done.

Passthecake30 · 06/01/2019 18:58

I struggle to get things that fit. 6ft, size 10-12. Skinny jeans, stripy tops with a long cardigan and boots/converse is my uniform at home. Black trousers, jumper and shirt or top and cardigan is my uniform at work. Boring!
