Tweed Blazer - how to style it

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 03/01/2019 11:52

I have bought a tweed blazer in the sales. It hasn't arrived yet (purchased online) and I am wondering if it was a good idea!

For background I'm a sahm so usually dress casually.

Are blazers a coat replacement for spring or autumn? Are they a classic investment piece?

Just a bit clueless really and would appreciate advice.

Thank you.

Oh yes definetly! I wear mine all the time, I'm very attached to a tweed saint Laurent blazer I bought few years ago, it goes with everything.

I have at least 3 tweed jackets so I'm biased. I usually wear them with jeans or something casual to avoid being mistaken for an elderly member of the royal family (although on the quiet, I do quite admire HM's style). I buy them second hand and look out for Harris or Donegal tweed because the colours are fab and they're great quality.

I wear them mainly in spring and autumn and sometimes summer too. I must admit this year (i.e. last year) the time window when it was cool enough for tweed but not cold enough for a coat was quite short. But most years they're pretty versatile if you're in the UK. And when it's really cold, they're a good extra layer under a coat (if it's roomy enough).

I would say they're a classic but not timeless, by which I mean they do come in and out of fashion. But a lot of the time they fly under the radar.

With blue jeans or chinos, a white collared shirt, a buckled belt and ankle boots it the classic early middle-age way to style it. Avoid unless you love it. Depending on your age and style possible add a flash of contrast - a bright pop of colour from a scarf, a boat necked top, fashionable flats or trainers for the playground, and very tight jeans or jeggings.

Harebellmeadow · 03/01/2019 12:28

Meant avoid the look, not the tweed. Love tweed but it always makes me look dumpy 😭

Floisme · 03/01/2019 12:36

I think that, because tweed has so many connotations, it's easy to mess around with it. One of my favourite outfits last winter was a Harris Tweed jacket over my husband's Ramones T shirt (until he caught me and confiscated it). I don't wear flowery dresses but I think they would work too if the shapes were right. You don't need to do that much to sharpen it up.

I have one and love it with jeans (blue or black skinny jeans). Get loads of compliments when I wear it. Mine is quite cropped though ( not too short) but is a great shape with jeans and looks classy I think!

Bumping the thread for opinions, what would you wear with this jacket. ( it is mid thigh length).

That’s really called a Cheltenham jacket. For obvious reasons. You see them at Cheltenham races. I think they are impossible to style when that length. My tweed coat is full length and I go racing all the time. You then don’t need to worry about trousers, jeans or dresses or skirts! I think these jackets go best with jeans or colour coordinated trousers. Plenty of women wear a matching skirt but that’s strictly racing wear! I would go for a hacking jacket or a coat. Not the in between length.

Alwayscheerful · 06/01/2019 16:29

@BubblesBuddy -thank you Bubbles, i think you may be right it is perhaps too long, I find a lot of jackets too short I must have a long back, I will keep looking for something slightly shorter

Thankssomuch · 06/01/2019 16:30

I love tweed jackets and have two (one from Joules and one which I had made, more of an investment piece) I adore wearing them, I style them over either vintage style day dresses or lacy high necked blouses. I always add a diamanté brooch. The poster who wears hers with a Ramones tee shirt - fabulous idea! Tweed is very versatile so I would wear it with leopard print, denim or a silk shirt, anything really.

Alwayscheerful · 06/01/2019 17:04

@Thankssomuch -I probably need to bite the bullet and order a bespoke jacket. Must view it as an investment with an eventual low cost per wear.
I like the "Cheltenham" length but a slightly shorter but bottom covering length would be more useful.

BubblesBuddy · 06/01/2019 17:13

Magee have quite a few longer length jackets in their sale. I would look at them. Or try House of Bruar. Both have classic styles.

Thankssomuch · 06/01/2019 17:22

My bespoke jacket is still in great nick, two years and a lot of wears, in. It is a longer length. Actually I find a shorter length is better in a way (with dresses) but the longer length does look and feel really good, especially with jeans.

Lomondstripe · 06/01/2019 17:26

I have 4 tweed blazers and a tweed field coat (needs to be properly cold for that though, it weighs about 4 stone and anything quicker than a leisurely walk leaves me rather sweaty...). I wear them with skinny jeans or trousers - with heels or smart flats for work and riding boots or ankle boots outside work. I do have a matching skirt for one but have never once worn them together.

dudsville · 06/01/2019 18:20

I always have 2 or 3 on the go in Spring and autumn, love them for that little bit of warmth but they basically look very cool. I wear them with anything as they can dress anything up.

It's years old now, but I've always liked SJP's tweed blazer look in the Gap ads.

Charlotte Rampling rocked a tweed blazer in the 70s and more recently, Clemence Poesy wears them well Smile

W0rriedMum · 08/01/2019 07:38

I ordered a Boden one hoping for the same ironic look. I've yet to decide if I'm keep it. It is possibly too long (over bum) to style in a modern way.

Alwayscheerful · 08/01/2019 08:37

@W0rriedMum that's interesting, which colour did you go for? How is the quality?

Alwayscheerful · 08/01/2019 08:50

@Thankssomuch I am loving the Clemence Poecy look but sadly her tweed jackets look to be Chanel.

Atalune · 08/01/2019 08:58

I would love one but am on a no spend until December!

I would team with-

Slim jeans, white t-shirt, ankle boots
Slim jeans, crisp white shirt and crew neck black or navy jumper, ankle boots
Midi length the dress with boots

I would view it as a “neutral” and wear it with everything!

TheWombat · 08/01/2019 09:06

I love tweed jackets. Today I’m wearing mine with leather skinny jeans, but I also like them with boyfriend jeans rolled at the hem. I put something fairly plain underneath - a fine knit or t shirt.

I think if you rolled / pushed up the cuffs of a longer line jacket, the proportions would work quite well.

Thankssomuch · 08/01/2019 09:07

Admittedly the Chanel version may be out of reach (!) but the look is worth noting! It’s the way Clemence styles things that I love.

Alwayscheerful · 08/01/2019 09:52

@Thankssomuch yes her styling is fab, I am googling for good quality looks likes as we speak!

Alwayscheerful · 08/01/2019 10:01

Look a likes!
