Must-have clothing items for Northern England?

Hello! We’re relocating from the southern United States to Northern England in the next couple of months. The climate is obviously very different and I have no idea what we absolutely must have in the sense of clothes/shoes for the day to day in England. We are coming from a very warm climate ☀️ 🌵 and are so not use to cold and wet. Jackets, boots, etc are obvious needs, but what kind? What am I looking for?

@halfpintmama; I am from the very south of England and moved to the north west. I think it depends on how cold you run. I run cold and when everyone else is fine, I am normally freezing so I would take that into consideration.

I find that a couple of degrees can make a difference to whether or not I’m comfortable. Plus I imagine coming from a hot place to a cold place might be a bit of a shock.

In winter I mostly wear jeans or trousers and will sometimes wear heattech leggings from Uniqlo underneath if it’s cold or if they are summer type trousers. I wear wool or cashmere jumpers because they keep me warmer, and when it’s cold I wear heattech tops form Uniqlo underneath also. I bought some thick wool type socks from Tk maxx (your Tj Maxx I believe). I bought some snow boots last year with a fold out ice grip system on them for when it snows. They have metal studs and can be pushed in and out with a key.

This year I invested in a Soia and Kyo coat because last year I was freezing. I couldn’t find anything warm enough here. Think Canada goose but more stylish and not as expensive. It’s for down to -25 which most people will consider complete overkill but I love it. It means I don’t dread going out when it gets cold. It is also waterproof with a big storm hood and storm cuffs. If you are inclined to get any similar coat I would get one before leaving. Most people here will wear outdoors type/hiking coats and they don’t really have ‘heavy duty’ coats as not considered cold enough.

I also bought cashmere gloves in the Johnston’s of Elgin sale because they are very warm.

If you do not get that cold you will be able to get away with less.

Last year it snowed a lot here but this year has been quite mild in comparison. I am still grateful for my ‘duvet’ like coat Grin

(Waits for barrage of comments of comments labelling me a ‘southern jessie’ Wink)
