Must-have clothing items for Northern England?

halfpintmama · 28/12/2018 17:55

Hello! We’re relocating from the southern United States to Northern England in the next couple of months. The climate is obviously very different and I have no idea what we absolutely must have in the sense of clothes/shoes for the day to day in England. We are coming from a very warm climate ☀️ 🌵 and are so not use to cold and wet. Jackets, boots, etc are obvious needs, but what kind? What am I looking for?

Global warming is happening - Boxing Day at the Sunderland game and I was TOO HOT ! Layers and coat off Grin
Harrogate is such a beautiful place with great shops , so cool going for new stuff !

CalmConfident · 28/12/2018 22:20

Liking the parkrun suggestion hijack... definitely do that! Best advice on this thread Smile

cathyandclare · 28/12/2018 22:22

Harrogate is not the bloody arctic

Actually Harrogate is the coldest place on earth. Seriously, it has its own microclimate. Even when it's mild and still in the rest of Yorkshire, there's a bitter wind in Harrogate.

It's still beautiful though if you've got your thermals on

halfpintmama · 28/12/2018 22:44

@VI0LET and @CalmConfident agree, best info on the thread. Already followed them on Facebook and looking forward to joining out for a run when I get there! It’s so hard to run year round in Texas... 95-100+ F (35-40 C) days starting in April and not a lot of shade to avoid the hot sun. I’ll take some cool weather running any day of the week!

Flat cap, pipe, couple of whippets and learn to flatten your vowels
Although in Harrogaaate you might be ok
Never say the. Going to t'shop. Going to t'school
You'll get used to it

BubonicWoman · 28/12/2018 22:49

Harrogate is incredibly mild compared to the rest of North Yorkshire

BeauEllie · 28/12/2018 23:04

I'm in the North East. I actually bought a coat this year as I climbed up Ben Nevis and everyone said I would I need one. I carried it my bag all the way to the top, it was -2 but I wasn't cold. Folk looked at me like I was some kind of crazy woman!

Seriously though, my friends who come from hotter countries tend to wear long thermal underwear.

RomanyRoots · 28/12/2018 23:09

Harrogate isn't the arctic, but the ladies get cold you know, underneath.
It comes from the fur coats and no knickers.
The surrey of the North, not like the rest of Yorkshire.

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 28/12/2018 23:12

I went to the cinema, James St and Waitrose in Harrogate today ........ without a coat.

halfpintmama · 28/12/2018 23:12

@bubonicwoman mild for you is cold for me in Texas ☀️🌵 Harrogate’s average summer high is our winter high. The average winter high is our average winter low. I will definitely need to acclimate... until then, I’ll layer up!

I've been told by my Canadian friend that it's the damp coldness in the UK that makes her feel the cold... she says the winter coat she wears in the dry cold of Canada isn't enough here...

BubonicWoman · 28/12/2018 23:35

Grin the damp is bad. Are you sure you want to move here
Stay in Harrogate because it gets colder as you move west!
Harrogate and York always seem mild to me

CountFosco · 28/12/2018 23:46

Actually Harrogate is the coldest place on earth.

No, the coldest place on earth is Oxford. I know this because when I lived there my flatmates boyfriend went to Siberia and when he came back he felt colder in Oxford because of the cold damp fog that went through all layers of clothing. Siberian cold is dry, much more bearable.

Having said that I'm from further north than most people on this thread although I live a few miles from Harrogate and I don't have a fleece, or thermals or an item of clothing with down. In the winter I mainly wear a woolen coat. That is more than adequate for my walk to school and drive to work. I may be biased (I lived in Glasgow for a few years) but I don't think north yorkshire is particularly wet and a raincoat is not necessary unless you are outdoorsy.

Letsmove1t · 28/12/2018 23:59

Don’t buy anything - go to Harrogate Cotswold ( outdoor walking clothes shop) when you’ve unpacked, then about 1hr drive to “mall” near York mcarthur glen- plenty discount shops to get a few climate appropriate things until our fashions/ your style fall into place & you get into it. uk is fab welcome

GinandGingerBeer · 28/12/2018 23:59

Love this thread, can just picture the OP turning up in the playground on day one sporting clogs, a flat cap atop her rollers, a pinny under her joules mac, fag on while the whippet takes a pee on the ferret. Grin
We are soooo stylish up north. Wink

TheABC · 29/12/2018 00:04

Just remember that the whole of the UK can fit in Texas. So you can mostly get by with the same clothes wherever you are, unless it's in the outer fringes of Scotland or Wales where the weather really lets it's hair down.

I am telling you this as a Yorkshire lass who is currently in Cornwall!

BubonicBudgie · 29/12/2018 00:07

In Manchester this week it's still shorts and no coats.
Gin I'm sure the fag remark means something very different in the US of A

LuluJakey1 · 29/12/2018 00:15

Bubonic Well we are slightly more with it in Newcastle because although it is still shorts and boob tubes (without coats) as well as 6 inch heels, for a night out down the Bigg Market, tattoos, Santa hats and tinsel are still de rigeur.

BubonicBudgie · 29/12/2018 00:20

Lulu I think tatts are compulsory round here. I just let the kids scribble all over me arms, so I fit in Grin

halfpintmama · 29/12/2018 00:24

@ginamdgingerbeer fortunately this American can recognize jest... but maybe for shits and giggles I’ll follow those instructions and creep out everyone at the playground Wink

And yes @bubonicbudgie very different meaning

When you get here you will find you can have a lovely weekend in Manchester 🍷

blueeyedpie · 29/12/2018 00:40

This thread is wonderful. Following for winter fashion tips

halfpintmama · 29/12/2018 00:49

@bubonicbudgie if that’s where the good wine is, I’m there! Maybe that should be my next posts.... best beer, best wine, best spirits in England.... Grin

BubonicBudgie · 29/12/2018 00:49

Blue if it gets really cold I might put my flip flops away, and even get a pair of ankle socks

PickAChew · 29/12/2018 00:50

Walking boots and a brolly.
