I just can't make it look nice, it either looks like I'm not wearing any makeup, or just droopy eyed. Please does anyone have any tips, what am I doing wrong? Is my face just too old to retain makeup properly? I can't do eyeliner nicely because the skin is too crinkly and impossible to "draw" on. And my brow is dropped down. Perhaps I should start with some BOTOX?

Hi, Yes I get on well with the Bobbi Brown corrector and the concealer. That's after trying loads of different brands. I went to the counter in Selfridges and got the lady to do a demo on me and then bought everything she used, even the brush! She used a powder too, and I also bought that, but don't tend to use it. Too worried about it settling in my undereye lines. Looked good when she did it though!

My skincare routine is very umm "individual". Always double cleanse (Emma Hardie/TTDO/Lush ultrabland/coconut oil/whichever of those is in stock at home)! followed by Dennis Gross foaming cleaner (expensive but love it)/a random korean wash thing/Cetaphil/whatever takes my fancy. Then I either do a nip and fab pad or some kind of exfoliating toner. Then either hyaluronic acid or glycolic acid or vitamin A. Then whatever tester I have for moistureisier. OR I just do the cleanse and an hour later put on Retin-A. Bet you wish you never asked now Grin

Sorry that should say "Then either hyaluronic acid or glycolic acid or vitamin C"

Ooh! You have lovely eyebrows! 😊

Tortycat · 24/12/2018 03:30

you dont look old at all! if it wasnt for the grey hairs at the side i would put you late 20s to 30s. Dont worry!!

NigellasGuest · 24/12/2018 19:25

Update - this is the best i can do so far. CANNOT do flicks and I think I shouldn't bother at all, too disjointed with my deep set eyes. I've increased mascara and tried to do some tight lining!

You have beautiful eyes... major eye envy... xx

NationalShiteDay · 24/12/2018 19:45

Your eyes look great! Mine are deeper set than yours and I use Mac liquid liner with a flick at the end. Just takes practice. I never use eyeshadow as no one would see it.

Having read this thread the other day I treated myself to an eyelash curler and am very pleased with the results.

NigellasGuest · 24/12/2018 19:47

Thank you, they're really not all that, when you see my full face!! I have major eye envy of cat flick eyes...

So glad you treated yourself to some eyelash curlers as a result of the thread, just a little bit of positivity! What shape are your eyes? I think mine are round, which combined with deep set, if very hard to do a flick. Plus, I've read that a flick should angle out to the end of the eyebrow, and mine end quite a way in.

A light brown shimmery eyeshadow at the base of your kids then a highlighting/ light colour on the 'hood'

NigellasGuest · 24/12/2018 20:28

Thanks mummyshark, does shimmery stuff not draw attention to something you want to disguise though?

I would put a little bit of liner underneath your eye, not black though. You can get gel liner with a small brush which will make it easier. Subtle false lashes will lift your eye too, but not too heavy as they'll darken your eyes which you don't want. Have a look at YouTube for a tutorial on highlighting and contouring around your eyes, this will make much more of a difference than just what you're putting on your eyes. Your eyes are lovely though, mine are much more hooded and I'm still young (I think...)

Gooseygoosey12345 · 24/12/2018 20:34

Also, if you don't want to do a flick you can use a slightly darker shadow on the outer area of your eye but up towards your brow bone, this will help lift your eye too

keepmoving · 26/12/2018 08:01

Looks great and good job with the tight lining! Would soften the line under the eye, either blend out with a brush if you've used a pencil or take a little shadow close to the outer third of the lashes.

NigellasGuest · 26/12/2018 11:57

Thanks all, I need to perfect the tight lining as I did it with a pencil, and it looks like I need a gel liner with brush. Still work in progress, but my DDs have confirmed my latest efforts are an improvement. Can't get them to make me up, as they're only used to their own youthful faces! (Older DD confirms she has my eyes, and already has her own issues with flicks, but a younger version thereof).

Can anyone recommend a gel liner? I think black for the tightlining and bronze or brown for undereye, judging from your comments. Thank you formally the input!

@NigellasGuest
Ime adds definition and makes the whole eye area appear lighter and brighter. You can buy really cheap (but good!) highlighter sticks. Best to maybe buy a few and experiment

raisinsraisins · 26/12/2018 13:08

Nigellasguest - Bobbi Brown do a good gel liner.

I also had a great makeover at Bobbi Brown Selfridges, but the make up artist did my make up the same as hers, and made no mention of me having to wear it a bit differently as I have hooded eyes. It was not until I later looked at some YouTube videos that I realised that I have hooded eyes and cannnot wear winged eyeliner.

Anyway, thank you. This thread has made me think about how to change my make up routine. I do like wearing black eyeliner on my upper lashes, but don’t think it suits my eyes.

NigellasGuest · 28/12/2018 13:42

I've been experimenting and perhaps this doesn't look much different to my precious pictures but this is where I'm at. Have borrowed shadow from DD but still dont have gel liner so using pencil on top lid, nothing at all on bottom lid.

Looks great - impressive tight line technique!

Snowballs4ever · 28/12/2018 20:40

I like your eyes they look beautiful! I like a peachy or skin tone shimmery eye shadow to brighten the eyes, might look nice? Urban decay have nice ones. Also could try lash thickening/lengthening products, I really want to try revitalash though it's pricey.

NigellasGuest · 28/12/2018 20:46

Thanks! I've ordered an eyelash comb as recommended upthread which should help. Will try peachy shade - This was just quite a boring neutral.
