Tell me about your Dr Martens...

I’m really hoping to get some Dr Martens for Christmas, if not I will be treating myself. I like the 1460 8 eyehole classics in black. Are they really worth the money? Any recommendations? Pics if you’d love to share Smile

Read about how to wear them in/soften them before you buy, or buy used. You will see plenty on Ebay that have only been worn a few times because they can be very hard on the feet and people just put them on and expect them to be comfortable immediately. You have to be made of strong stuff but it is worth it.

Mine are not the ones you want but are the original Originals, as in vintage not the newer relaunched Originals, if that makes sense. I bought them used as I knew they would need wearing in, and even pre-worn they gave me blisters but they were great in the snow.

I have just bought another pair (used of course).

PoutySprout · 05/12/2018 18:38

I have a purple pair. I adore them. Never any issues with breaking in.

Nodney · 05/12/2018 18:38

I have some 8 hole cherry reds and I have to say they havent hurt me much at all. I have absolutely no idea how to wear them though! I put them on with some straight leg jeans and it didn't look great tbh. But I like them!!

Sabulous · 05/12/2018 18:40

I have about 10 pairs, some needed breaking in, others didn't. They sell Docs Socks which are padded in all the right places to break them in.
I love my Docs Grin

Girlwiththearabstrap · 05/12/2018 18:41

I've got a few pairs. My floras and leonoras didn't need breaking in but my 8 hole ones have. I usually wear compeed type blister plasters for the first few wears and have never really had any problems.

I'm wearing my patent 8 hole ones with black or grey skinny jeans a lot. Also with a cord dungaree dress and thick tights.

TrippingTheVelvet · 05/12/2018 18:42

I'm getting cherry red ones for Christmas and am so excited! I plan to wear them everywhere except for work and with everything. I have a flowery pair and have been known to wear them on a night out with dresses Grin

afrikat · 05/12/2018 18:45

I have 4 pairs of DMs and love them all. One pair needed serious breaking in (but they were worth it). Others didn't need anything

stopinthenameoflove · 05/12/2018 18:47

I've just bought some black patent ones after a long time really wanting. Anyway look great well I think so anyway but still breaking in . Didn't know about doc socks @Sabulous . Great idea Smile

Fairylea · 05/12/2018 18:47

I ended up putting the ones I’d treated myself to on eBay after trying relentlessly to break them in and giving up. I used to wear them all the time as a teen but now I’m 38 I think I just don’t have it in me to persevere for fashion and went out and got myself some Clarks boots instead!

My dh however is obsessed with Dms and collects them and has 20+ pairs. He wears them straight from the box with no pain and no blisters at all! Shock I think he has dm shaped feet!

Holidayshopping · 05/12/2018 18:49

I had to wear my oxblood 10 holes in for months and months as a teenager; they made my feet bleed, it was awful!

I have several pairs of the wedge calf length zip up DMs though which haven’t been like that at all!

JakeBallardswife · 05/12/2018 18:51

I've bought a few weeks ago with the DM socks and I wore them a little to start off with then built it up, totally worth it!

PinkFizzz · 05/12/2018 18:53

I have the ones you're talking about. My last two pairs lasted over 10 years of regular wear.

They do require breaking in, and it can be painful. My advice is to wear really thick socks for the first few weeks - I generally wear the fluffy bed sock type ones, and stick a couple of thick blister plasters on your heels first too.

After that though they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I like mine with tights and dresses.

BeekyChitch · 05/12/2018 18:56

Are Dr Martens waterproof? Like properly waterproof without leaks in?

Greenglassteacup · 05/12/2018 18:56

I bought the vintage originals last winter but they are NOTHING like DM’s of the 1980’s that I lived in throughout my teens. They are way narrower & they squash my toes like a really evil vice.

Greenglassteacup · 05/12/2018 18:57

DM’s aren’t waterproof, they’re just leather

SymphonyofShadows · 05/12/2018 18:59

I collect Docs and have lots of pairs. There are a large variety of leathers that they use. The last 3 pairs haven’t needed breaking in and they were in the ‘smooth’ leather. Anything made in ‘Softy T’ will be comfortable immediately but I think the classic 8 holes may be in a harder leather.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 05/12/2018 19:01

I love mine though I have to buy them at a bigger size than other shoes. They're so comfy and good quality. Mine are covered in flowers. I've found it's the cheap copies that rub and cause blisters. The real thing is lovely, very resistant to water or snow and very durable.

PanamaPattie · 05/12/2018 19:04

I’ve got a 14 hole black pair with roses, a 14 hole metallic grey and pink pair, a black patent leather pair, 14 hole oxblood, black shoes, a soft leather pink pair of desert boots and a soft leather mustard pair. Only the patent leather pair hurt for a while.

Bowchicawowow · 05/12/2018 19:07

I have a few pairs of Docs and they do take a bit of breaking in but I think they are worth it. One of my pairs is quite unusual and I get asked about them a lot because people really like them. I have just bought a pair of boots from Jones the Bootmaker and they were incredibly comfortable from the first moment I wore them. Quite a contrast to my Docs!

Thewalker75 · 05/12/2018 19:07

I'm 38 and loved my cherry red pair as a teenager. I was fed up of buying new boots each year to keep up with fashion so thought dms never go out of fashion because they're never really in fashion.

They weren't too bad to wear in. Now I've got kids I must admit the faff of putting them on means they're usually left undone but I still love them and know they will last a while.

Must admit the quality of the leather isn't quite what it was 25 years ago though.

These are the ones I bought

SaintEyning · 05/12/2018 19:32

My Chelsea boots were fine from first wear, my patent Mary Jane brogues needed a few weeks to break in and my brand new black eight hole 1460s were great from the third day. I take a 5 in most other shoes but get my DMs in a 4 and they are my favourite of all time shoes & boots. I had DMs for school from age 11 and a few pairs of cherry red boots as a teenager/in my twenties. All long lasting, super comfy and bring me much joy to look at!

RenardeRenarde · 05/12/2018 20:22

I regularly wear a pair of Aimilitas in the Aunt Sally leather - they’re similar looking to the classic boot but a slightly slimmer more feminine cut which I prefer, the aunt sally leather doesn’t need breaking in mercifully.
To the poster asking about leaks, they’re not sold as waterproof per se and I wouldn’t neccessarily traverse deep puddles in them but mine keep my feet perfectly dry in wet weather

AwkwardPaws27 · 09/12/2018 00:01

I've had my white pair since my 13th birthday. I even got married in them.

StableGenius · 09/12/2018 00:06

I've just bought these for dd (13) for Christmas. I had a pair myself that lasted for ever and ever and ever. I guess (can't remember Blush if they were uncomfortable at first but guessing not much compared to cheap shoes that took chunks out of my feet).Definitely worth the money.
