Tell me about your Dr Martens...

I’m really hoping to get some Dr Martens for Christmas, if not I will be treating myself. I like the 1460 8 eyehole classics in black. Are they really worth the money? Any recommendations? Pics if you’d love to share Smile

I got the Jadons ( platform) ones for my birthday last month. I was having major trouble until I got some Doc Socks . Since then they've been absolutely fine

Branleuse · 09/12/2018 00:08

Theyre not waterproof, but ive never found they leak either in the rain

Mrsjohnmurphy · 09/12/2018 01:20

Never managed to break a pair in, probably because I have a half size difference in my feet Sad I do like some of the newer designs with softer leather, but don't have the money these days.

CountFosco · 09/12/2018 07:53

I think he has dm shaped feet!

I wore DMs for all of the 90s, I always had 2 pairs of boots (a black pair with tie dye laces and a green pair with tartan laces), a pair or lace upshoes and a pair of lace up shoes. I think my feet must be DM shaped as well because when DH bought me a purple pair of 8 hole DMs a few years ago they only rubbed a bit on the top of my foot for the first few wears.

They are very comfortable and practical shoes and my favourite shoes to wear forcasual outfits. Want another pair because the purple is restrictive with what else you can wear with them but haven't decided what other colour I want, probably cherry becauae I've never had a pair and it's such a classic colour.

CountFosco · 09/12/2018 07:54

That should say Mary Janes and a pair of lace ups

CaptainBrickbeard · 09/12/2018 08:01

I have turquoise Pascal softies which needed no breaking in. I wish they came in half sizes though; they are a bit too roomy. I can’t drive comfortably in them so end up wearing them a lot less than I thought I would. I love them though.

Nanalisa60 · 09/12/2018 08:06

I haven’t had a pair of Dm’s since I was a young girl !! Holly Mary thights, mohair skirt, and a Ben Sherman shirt I thought I looked the dogs bs was my two tone phase never went the whole way with the look as I kept my long hair in a pony tail!! I was looking in the doc Martin shop the other day and thought they all look very nice. Will ask my granddaughter if she would like a pair next year when she goes to big school. I’m just to old for them never wear something if you worn it the first time around!! I loved the red ones!!

maamalady · 09/12/2018 08:30

I tried standard boots on and they were incredibly painful just standing still - it makes me wince thinking of what breaking them in would have been like.

Happily, when I tried the softer leather ones they were incredibly comfortable immediately; I love them.

Earslaps · 09/12/2018 09:13

I bought red Pascals and some Doc socks. They rubbed a bit just above the heels for a few days but two pairs of socks sorted that out.

I love them.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/12/2018 09:38

DH has brought me some DMs for Christmas, I don't know which ones but my teenage self is very excited. I shall stock up on Doc's socks.

hammeringinmyhead · 09/12/2018 11:01

I love my Pascal Virginias in black but I haven't worn them this winter as I was pregnant until November and now they're too faffy to put on with wrangling a newborn. Maybe in Jan! Pascals are generally softer so easier to break in.

LassWiADelicateAir · 09/12/2018 14:42

The biggest waste of money I can think of and the most painful footwear I've ever had.

I agree with their being a complete faff to put on. I'm not sure why one should have to go through agonies "breaking in" footwear but I did try and they remain resolutely horrible to wear. I've now given up.

LassWiADelicateAir · 09/12/2018 14:51

Oh and just checked mine are Pascal- if that is supposed to be the softer leather goodness knows how crippling the original would be.

EdWinchester · 09/12/2018 14:56

My DMs are the most comfortable footwear I own.

But I went to hell and back breaking them in.

EdWinchester · 09/12/2018 14:58

...and I wear the safety 'Rosa' rigger boots for work. OMG, the breaking in of them was horrendous.

mrsoutnumbered · 09/12/2018 16:15

I got some last year and have only worn them a handful of times. I just find them so damn heavy! My feet and legs are exhausted after doing a school run in them!

Seriously thinking about selling them on eBay...I love the look of them but they are just not practical for someone who walks 6 miles a day with a buggy.

Saucery · 09/12/2018 16:30

Charlas, Triumphs and Violas needed no wearing in at all. Darcie Divas (patent, heels) a bit nippy at first, needed short sock liners as well as tights.
Originals - thick socks and strategic plasters for a couple of weeks.

mrsoutnumbered · 09/12/2018 19:20

These are the ones I have, by the way

LEMtheoriginal · 09/12/2018 19:27

I have a pair of zip up chelsea boots that are really soft and haven't needed breaking in at all. DP boight a pair of shoes becaise i was raving about how comfortable they are and he has just about brojen his feet in!

You are right though- they are not the same. I do believe you can buy dm classics that are still made in England but they are more expensive.

I paid £140 for mine and the softness of the leather concerns metgat they wont last. They had better as i expect boots to last at least two years. My last pair were UGG biker boots that lasted a good three years.

LEMtheoriginal · 09/12/2018 19:32

these i love them . I am 48 and very un trendy.

TheRattleBag · 09/12/2018 19:38

I have Serena boots (the fur lined ones) in black and brown and they took no breaking in at all.

The worst pair for me were my first pair of 1461 shoes (bought back when they were all made in England) and they were a bugger. I've had them over 20 years now though, so it was worth it! (Wore them yesterday in fact). I have a few pairs only slightly worn, and I think they might need a bit of practice too (but as they're patterned I get less chance to wear them!)

NorfolksGiven · 09/12/2018 19:48

LEMtheoriginal those are gorgeous, I love them... my purple Fly Chelsea boots are on the verge on needing replacing.

Wish to hell I hadn’t stepped into this thread!!

KnobOfStork · 09/12/2018 19:56

The doc martens socks are so worth it. I have about a million pairs and always used to wear them with thick socks and padded plasters, wrap them in a tea towel and bash the life out of them with a hammer and get my squaddy mate to wee on them then try and stuff them tight to stretch them in between wears but the socks now make it effortless. I do personally find the black ones harder to break in but don't know if that's my imagination or not.
