Pear cut engagement ring - old fashioned?

WTAFIGO · 04/12/2018 21:07

I am choosing and engagement ring and want to avoid the princess and cushion cut as I’d just like something a bit different. I’m finding myself drawn to the pear cut/tear drop engagement rings but note that these seem very unpopular.

Whilst I am looking for something different I am worried I may have bad taste - do I? Are these cuts undesirable for a reason?

Any engagement ring inspiration gratefully received!

I think that by far the most important thing is to get something you like. But i think pears are coming back. I've seen some amazing ones that are off-square, so the pear is at an angle. Those look v modern. You could also think about coloured stones if you want something out of the ordinary.

Luckingfovely · 04/12/2018 21:13

I don't think they are actively unpopular as much as just not seen very often these days.

Both are beautiful and would be lovely in a modern setting.

One piece of advice - all high st jewellers are ridiculously overpriced. If you can, find the design you want and then find a local goldsmith to make it for you. You will probably get twice the stone size for half the money - and also it will be unique and one-off and perfect for you.

I have a pear cut engagement ring and I still absolutely love it 7 years on. It’s a bit of a pain for getting a wedding ring to fit with it - I had one made which curves underneath it.

Youmadorwhat · 04/12/2018 21:15

I have a marquise cut diamond and I love it!! Don’t see many of them at all

YearOfYouRemember · 04/12/2018 21:16

Why do you want a particular shaped stone that is popular? It's only you and your fiancé that needs to like it.

flamingofridays · 04/12/2018 21:16

I think pear shape is beautiful! Im surprised they're not more popular. Theyre not as "in your face" as princess cut.

Blacktoffeecat · 04/12/2018 21:17

I have a pear cut engagement ring, I love it but I have been married 12 years now so no idea about fashions. I had to have my wedding ring made with a curve to fit it.

MrsLettuce · 04/12/2018 21:17

You might like to look at antique/vintage rings if you fancy something different. There's some amazing stuff out there

Pear and oval are both lovely

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/12/2018 21:18

I've never seen one so I just did a little internet browsing. I am now in love with a beautiful yellow diamond pear cut ring. I can dream.

IveHitPeakTumeric · 04/12/2018 21:20

I saw someone on the train today with a dazzling sideways pear cut diamond set in yellow gold. It looked awesome.

WTAFIGO · 04/12/2018 21:23

Thanks everyone, you have put my mind at rest. I just couldn’t understand why something so beautiful isn’t more popular and wondered if i was missing something. I’m glad my choice will be something unusual but that I love it.

I love pear cut but I was under the impression that it was a more expensive cut (ie you get less for your money) as there is more wastage during the cutting process.

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2018 21:30

Tbh you should be more worried imho if you're buying what everyone else is.

It's designs that are part of the "current" trend that most often date the worst.

I think as long as you accept you'll likely need a custom wedding ring to fit with it then they can look beautiful and very classy.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 04/12/2018 21:45

Engagement rings don't need to be fashionable - a classic cut will never look dated and you won't get bored of it. Hopefully you will be wearing it for the rest of your life, so you want something that you won't grow out of as your style changes over time.
Pear cut is lovely and classic. I think people possibly avoid it because it means having a shaped wedding ring. But if you don't mind then it's a very pretty choice.

explodingkitten · 04/12/2018 21:48

I'm an amateur goldsmith and I love a pear cut! At our class we all tend to go for the more unique kind of jewelry, why make (or buy) what they sell at every corner for such a luxury product. Choose what speaks to you, jewelry is such a personal choice and personal statement. You'd be surprised at the daft sounding ideas that some people come up with that really suits them and flatters them when it is finished.

WTAFIGO · 04/12/2018 21:50

So grateful for everyones comments. Just to clarify I am not looking for something fashionable, in fact that’s what I want to avoid. I just wondered if there was a reason they seem so much less popular that I didn’t know about. I am reassured by the comments here and very grateful for the advice from everyone.

I think they look beautiful. Try some on if you haven't, you might find that they do or don't suit your hand. That surprised me when we were shopping for mine. As others have said, you'll need to consider the wedding ring, so even if you're not buying that now, you might want to look for it and try some options. Enjoy yourself, it's by far the most fun shopping!

I love pear cut Smile

christmaspuddingyumyumyum · 04/12/2018 22:09

Have a look at auctions. You can pick up old jewellery very cheap and could possible find a nice diamond that way and then have a ring made to your spec.

Oly5 · 04/12/2018 22:09

I love a pear cut diamond, stunning

IdblowJonSnow · 04/12/2018 22:11

I like them. All jewellery fashions are cyclical so it'll come around again at some point - and then out again!

Haworthia · 04/12/2018 22:14

I have a pear cut engagement ring! It’s nine years old now. To be honest, fashion didn’t come into my choice - I just wanted something a bit different, but still wanted a diamond solitaire. It’s true that you hardly see them in shops, but I’m pretty sure, as AnnoyedByAlfieBear says, that’s because there’s more wastage during the cutting process.

Both my engagement and wedding rings were bespoke, and the wedding ring is moulded around the point of the pear, if you get what I mean. Thankfully, we got them at cost price Grin

WTAFIGO · 04/12/2018 22:15

@strikingmatches beautiful!

I don't like pear cut. They don't look good either alone or with a wedding ring imo.
