Organic hair perm disaster

I wrote a thread recently about dreading going into work and everyone noticing my new perm but that's not really a problem now.

What is a problem is that I had a perm a week ago and it's awful. I'm gutted. Spent so much money that I shouldn't have but was desperate to do something to fix my hair and now it's worse.

It looks like a birds nest. Really frizzy and afro like. Even the curls aren't proper curls but more like zig zag. I don't know if it's actually gone wrong?

My hair has been naturally curly before so know how to look after curls (microfiber towel, sulphate/silicone free products etc)

Apparently after 2 weeks the curls are meant to "settle" so will wait another week before going back to hairdresser.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if there's any hope for my hair ever looking nice again before it eventually grows out??

I had something similar about Fifteen years ago. To be honest it took about six weeks for it to settle down and after that I got constant compliments about my gorgeous curly hair. I'd love to get another perm as I think they really suit my thin flat hair but I am very grey and need to regularly colour my hair so my hairdresser doesn't recommend it. Actually I have a new hairdresser now so I might have a chat with them. Try not to panic OP as for the first three or four weeks I was contemplating shaving my hair off.

cakedup · 13/11/2018 13:31

Oh really? I'm hoping it will get better, thanks for that. By the way, with organic perms you can dye your hair. Hairdresser just told me to wait 2 weeks.

But if it takes 2-6 weeks for the curl to settle down, how long do you actually have nice hair for?

OP you mention zig-zags - how were the curls actually created? On curlers?

cakedup · 13/11/2018 13:46

Yes, on perm curling rods.

Can you post a photo? If your really unhappy go back to the salon.

SparkyBlue · 13/11/2018 14:28

@GhostCurry it looked amazing for months. As it grew out it got even nicer and really natural looking. It was almost like a loose curly blow dry. I had it done in October or thereabouts and I cut it into a short bob in August as I fancied a change.

Ok, here's my horrible hair.

I’d go back to the salon, because that’s not curl, which is what you paid for.

I have to add that the little bit of your face we can see shows you have enviable perfect skin, so scrape it back, show off that complexion and hold your head high. After getting your money back from the salon obvs

Atalune · 13/11/2018 21:56

I know NOTHING about perms, but that doesn’t look brilliant in terms of a curl.

However your hair colour is gorgeous and you have tons of it.

I would put in a bun with a cool clip, some lovely stud earrings and some great lippy.

cakedup · 13/11/2018 21:56

Ohyesiam aw thank you, you couldn't have written that in a nicer way! You're right...that's not a curl is it.

OP posts:
SparkyBlue · 13/11/2018 21:58

I can't see any curl. What type of curls did ye discuss?

cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:01

Atalune I do have a lot of hair and was fed up of putting it up, either completely or half. I was really hoping this perm would mean I could just wear my hair down but it's even more impossible now. Not only did I pay for the perm, but £50 for a cut. But the hairdresser cut my hair before the perm...(which took all of 10 minutes) whereas I think with a perm, you've got to do it afterwards really, even if you have to wait a week.

And this is a top winning award hairdresser! Other places were doing the same thing cheaper but I paid extra to ensure a good result!

I agree with pp that is not a curl and it won’t magically turn into a curl in the next week. You need to go back to your hairdresser, complain and get your money back then find a decent hairdresser who can try and rectify it.

Atalune · 13/11/2018 22:05

I would go back, sadly I’m not sure you have hot what you have paid for.....

cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:09

SparkyBlue the hairdresser showed me some pictures of clients he'd done before, with soft ringlet type curls. The girl next to me had just had hers done when I'd sat down and it was like this picture. I remember thinking woah...I hope mine is a bit softer than that. But I prefer that to what I ended up with!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo I was going to wait until the 2 week waiting period is up...just in case they tell me to wait it out. But you're right I guess...it's not going to drastically change into a proper curl is it.

cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:14

So now I've got to face going back. Awkward. So please help prepare me...I'm entitled to a full refund right? That's £160 including the cut. They're not going to want to part with that easily are they? What if they offer to fix it? I might have to go with a friend for a bit of back up!

OP posts:
Candlelights2345 · 13/11/2018 22:16

It’s not right, please go back. It looks like a very rough texture and a bit matted. Sorry OP.

Candlelights2345 · 13/11/2018 22:18

Ask them what’s gone wrong with it, then decide if you want them to try to fix it.
I’ve been back and complained about a terrible haircut (not a perm), and they re cut it for free.!

cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:23

I just feel if I go back they might just say, oh it's just really dry, you have to co-wash it or that I'm not using the right product or something. I am going to co-wash it tomorrow and will report back with pics if that's ok.

I also spent £30 on the shampoo and conditioner they encouraged me to buy which would bring out best results.

Candlelights2345 yep, birds nest basically.

OP posts:
Atalune · 13/11/2018 22:29

Well....

Just don’t be fobbed off with them and don’t be afraid to be quite firm.

Reputation is everything for a salon so I’m pretty sure them will “fix” it.

What solution do you want? I would want the money senior person in the place to do and it and not the stylist who permed it.

ChicagoLil · 13/11/2018 22:32

It looks like the hair is burned. Sorry.

cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:32

Atalune you would want the money or a senior person to fix it do you mean? I think this guy was senior!

OP posts:
cakedup · 13/11/2018 22:34

ChicagoLil I do have very coarse hair anyway...but if the perm was going to make it worse than he should have done a strand test? There was someone having a strand test for the perm whilst I was there.

Spamfrittersforeveryone · 13/11/2018 22:34

Blimey. I’m sorry OP but I don’t think you’ve got what you asked for there at all.

What did your hair look like before?
