Are Canada Goose parkas worth the money?

Just this really. I've seen a nice Didrikson in a sale locally, but really like Canada Goose. Are they overkill for the British climate? If so, what can people recommend?

Some of them look huge.

And I have no idea if they're any better for the birds than cheap down jackets.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/11/2018 23:44

I think they’re too warm, but I’ve noticed they do a lighter range now, so one of those might work. I had one when I moved to U.K. and sold it as I didn’t ever wear it there.

Want2bSupermum · 11/11/2018 23:49

They are far too warm for the UK and their cut is rather manly. DH has one for here in NYC and when he goes up to Canada in the winter. He got cold a couple of years ago when it was -45F and after getting back to the hotel ordered it in desperation.

For the UK the north face and Marmot are both good and half the cost if not more and are brilliant for UK winters. The other place surprisingly good for UK weather coats is GAP. They always have a sale on.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 11/11/2018 23:50

I’d love one of these, but I just couldn’t justify the cost- my waterproof Barbour parka was literally half the price.

They’re definitely on my Euro Millions shopping list though, I love the sound of a coat that is too warm for the British climate!

TheTroublesomestTribble · 12/11/2018 00:11

They're not worth the terrible suffering of the coyotes that have to die for people to wear them.

It's usually an adult female that gets caught in the trap while out hunting for food for her young. She dies in unimaginable suffering and her pups also die of starvation when she fails to return with food.

How anyone can wear one is beyond me.

LittleWingSoul · 12/11/2018 01:16

Oh god yes, what @TheTroublesomestTribble said

^^ THAT

Whether it’s ‘cold enough in the uk or not’ is NOT what you should be considering. FFS

chemenger · 12/11/2018 01:42

If you don’t mind supporting the fur trade, ie trapping as described above, go right ahead with your purchase. We live in Boston, we don’t have them and we have decided that people who wear them don’t get to pet the lovely dog we walk, he’s not friends with people who wear his dead cousins.

ellequick · 12/11/2018 05:43

Am so shocked by the amount of people I see wearing these awful coats. I had wondered if people realise it's real coyote fur or just assumed it's fake?

CraftyGin · 12/11/2018 05:47

I like mine, and don’t find it too warm. It also has a feminine cut.

Mominatrix · 12/11/2018 06:09

I love mine. Not all are boxy and they have ones with a slim silhouette. It is the only thing which got me through countless Saturdays/Sundays standing 3 hours pitch side.

I have to say that it too was not warm enough on certain days and I layered with a lightweight down jacket.

The fur really does not bother me and the sensationalised posts are really ill informed. Cayotes are a pest in Canada and are a pest there. I'm surprised that the same posters have not come waving their placards against the down in the coats!

pigeondujour · 12/11/2018 06:31

Mine's amazing and definitely not too warm for this country, nor badly cut. It actually has a drawstring waist so you can adjust the fit. This is my fourth winter with it and cost per wear will be tiny. And yes I know it's real coyote fur and can just about handle the devastation of someone not wanting me to pet their borrowed dog while wearing it Wink

GreenMeerkat · 12/11/2018 06:37

The coyotes are trapped and left to starve to death in pain.

How is that not cruel?

Definite nope from me. But I wouldn't wear any kind of fur anyway.

Mominatrix · 12/11/2018 06:38

...but you'd wear down. Right.....

GreenMeerkat · 12/11/2018 06:40

@Mominatrix No.

Mominatrix · 12/11/2018 06:45

So you'd rather wear poly fibres which have detrimental impacts on the environment so your choices are not saintly either.

There are almost no fabric choice which does not have some environmental or ethical impact. People who choose to purchase Canada Goose style parkas have made their choices. Your sensationalising and condemnation will not change that.

octoberfarm · 12/11/2018 06:52

I disagree, actually, @Mominatrix. I think a lot of people, as a PP mentioned, might not realize that the fur isn't fake. Obviously some people will have already bought this type of coat but explaining what really happens may well put others off buying it. There are ways to manage pest control issues without such prolonged suffering. It's not sensationalizing, it's just a fact of what they do to get the fur.

StylishMummy · 12/11/2018 06:55

I'd love a Canada Goose jacket, but wear my battered old waxed Barbour in the winter and am plenty warm enough.

Ignore the numpties on the anti-fur brigade. We all have to wear something and every single type of fabric has a detrimental environmental impact. Inc cotton, leather, polyester, acrylic etc etc

GreenMeerkat · 12/11/2018 06:58

It's not sensationalising if it actually happens! The coyotes are trapped and then starve/thirst/bleed to death. That is a fact, sorry if you find it uncomfortable but it is what it is.

It is your choice to wear whatever you want, just as it's mine to choose not to wear something because I think it's cruel.

GreenMeerkat · 12/11/2018 07:04

@StylishMummy there's environmental impact and there is directly funding the suffering of animals for a fur hood on a coat.

But tbh, with that price tag, you're the bloody numpties willing to spend that on any coat.

pigeondujour · 12/11/2018 07:06

Ah, here we are!

LuckyDiamond · 12/11/2018 07:06

I always think they look like the free promotional jackets handed out to project workers.

I’m sure they’re warm but they’re fugly.

Mominatrix · 12/11/2018 07:08

That is not how trappers kill the coyotes, therefore you are sensationalising. I am not uncomfortable with their methods.

CherryPavlova · 12/11/2018 07:10

Two of mine have them and wear them when it’s very cold or they’re outside for a long time. They were bought for colder climate wear but have lasted and are still used frequently.
I wouldn’t buy them as the only winter coat, as they are too warm for jumping between car and house and generally too warm for U.K.

Harebellmeadow · 12/11/2018 07:17

Thank you for posting about the coytes - i had no idea coyote fur was used. Or how it is produced. That is very different from a quick death by a skilled hunter, selectively controlling the population for conservation purposes.

I dont own any fur and would probably hold a funeral for it in my garden if i did inherit one. or selling it for charity might be more sensible
I also refuse to buy Barts polyester beanies with a real fur pom pom. The incongruence of the materials and the cheap price makes you wonder what chinese slaughterstall the fur came from.
I have one old down coat but prefer artificial fibres which are actually warmer.
