Cruelty free product recommendations- shocked at lack of &v little in our house!

Trying to reduce our recycling & grow our own and reduce meat intake and just had a look at cruelty free cosmetics and that's a real eye opener. I could really do with an overhaul and any help is greatly appreciated.

There are 2 products I really love which are Clarins Hydramask & eyemask and would love to replace these with animal cruelty free ones. Any recommendations?

The rest I usually use Eucerin products which I recently started using as Dr Hauscka was too expensive but realise not cruelty free...

So any recommendations for the following:

Shampoo
Toothpaste
Facial &body scrub
Day cream
Eye cream
Washing liquid
Softener product

I really hope to replace all our cosmetics & other products asap.

have a browse at Ethicsl Superstore.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/11/2018 14:11

toothpaste

shampoo

facial scrub

body scrub

day cream

laundry liquid

washing up liquid

softener

it's shocking how many products are tested on animals, when you go onto the sainsburys website and refine it to only show products that aren't, it often drops from 122 products displayed to 3!

all the best x

VinoEsmeralda · 04/11/2018 14:17

Sleepingismysuperpower1 and bikerunski thank you!
Im going to try all the products you recommended sleeping other than the Ecover washing up liquid as used that a few years ago and just wasn't up to the job

Bio D - Oxfam shops.

Method - some supermarkets.

Supermarket own brands - double check, but a lot are eg M&S, Waitrose.

Pop in to a health food shop, if you pass one. They usually have a make up/toilettries/cleaning section.

VinoEsmeralda · 04/11/2018 14:30

Thank you IdaDown like the idea of buying from Oxfam and we have one in town so will go and have a look. Method- like the granite cleaning stuff and will look into the other products.

Minefield.....

Some of the Superdrug own brand products are cruelty free as well.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 04/11/2018 14:49

Original Source Shower Gels (going by label/haven't done research)?

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 04/11/2018 14:51

Hi, I believe Dove have just been certified cruelty free, also pretty sure all Superdrug own brand products are cruelty free (and really reasonable!), I use their moisturisers, hair dye, make up remover, deodorant etc. My daughter uses their face masks. Eye liner and mascara I get from bodyshop.

Not sure if they might have changed the formula since you last tried, but I use Ecover washing up liquid and find it really good, ditto their clothes washing liquid and softener. Method sprays are great for bathrooms and kitchens. You could try ‘who gives a crap’ website for toilet roll- recycled, no plastic wrappers and the best company name ever!

Hope that’s helpful!

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 04/11/2018 16:30

Currently using Nspa (from ASDA) Raspberry Jelly scrub - Vegan + no microbeads + not expensive.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/11/2018 16:32

All Superdrug own brands and Aldi products incl house hold are buav approved. Waitrose, sainsburys and m & s toiletries are but not house hold products.

I don’t use conventional eye cream, I use the ordinary caffiene instead.

I was quite impressed with that course ethical supermarket catalogue which my daughter likes so I probably will be ordering some stuff for Christmas presents they also give you £10 off if you spend over £70 and one of my daughters want something out there for her birthday so I may as well

Useful list

Just be aware, an individual brand maybe cruelty free but its parent company may not be.

Or, the brand might be cruelty free here/EU but the company sells in mainland China where animal testing occurs by law.

Or, the company desn’t test the final product but may test the ingredients.

Or, will get a third party to test on their behalf.

Mindfield. - so I would avoid companies with ambiguous intention type statements. Rules out most big umbrella companies like Oonilver / evod soap, L’oxitan, Lorelle (yes, I know i’ve miss spelled).

There’s no need these days to test. Your whites aren’t going to get brighter or your hair glossier.

I use Method for household cleaning and liquid clothes detergent, Mrs Meyer's is good too.

VinoEsmeralda · 08/11/2018 08:53

Ecover and Method were recently bought by Unilever. The Ordinary is now part owned by Estée Lauder.

Co-op were first supermarket to go cruelty-free on household cleaners etc, so I use their own brand for a lot of cleaning products, toothpaste etc. Astonish is also cruelty free.

Faith in Nature is good for toiletries. Also Urtekram and Green People.

Superdrug is cruelty-free. Garden of Wisdom is cruelty-free.

Also watch out for branded foods as these are often owned by large parent companies who test other products on animals.

BagelGoesWalking · 08/11/2018 10:19

Cruelty Free:
Pai skincare
Facetheory
The Ordinary
Moogoo - shampoo, body wash etc
Pure Potions - shampoo, conditioner

Some Korean skincare brands:
Pyunkang Yul
Benton
Purito (I think)

BagelGoesWalking · 08/11/2018 10:21

Toothpaste - I've been using this one and quite like it. CF and vegan.

Wolfray · 08/11/2018 10:25

Sukin is one of my favourite brands for vegan, cruelty free and apparently carbon neutral products.

BagelGoesWalking · 08/11/2018 10:26

The downside to the shampoo and facial scrub that sleep has recommended is that they contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate high on the list which isn't good for your skin (dries it out and can cause irritation) so I'd spend a bit more and get better quality, if possible.

I use lots of Superdrug own brand products which are cruelty free.

So many companies are bought out by the massive conglomerates (loreal, unilver, estee lauded etc) that you have to make the decision whether you consider a comonet cruelty free when it's owned by a non cruelty free company.

Also something to consider is it's only cruelty free towards animals. Many products are made and produced in countries with less than stellar human rights records and many cosmetic companies that are cruelty free use a lot of Mica in their products, 25% of which is mined by child labourers.

What I'm saying is that you do your best (as I do and many others do) to be as ethical as possible but the likelihood is someone or something is getting shit on along the way for our western consumption.
