Hate my dry knotty long curly hair!

fishhavefeelingstoo · 03/11/2018 16:43

It's always knotty, I can't brush it or it goes frizzy, imagine a huge ball of frizz!
I've stopped using silicon products because I thought it was making it dull and dry in the end. I can't keep buying new products that don't work.

Please recommend shampoo, conditioner and leave in products. I've no patience for sitting for hours with coconut oil on wrapped in a towel. It probably needs a good cut, but whenever I go to the hairdresser they mess it up. I can't afford expensive hairdressers. My daughter trims the ends- all one length.

i have curly hair that turns into a huge ball of frizz if brushed. I have recently started using John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls shampoo and the leave in conditioner, and my curls seem glossy. when i am putting it up (in a pony tail) i dont brush the curls, only the top of my hair in order to put it up.

Have a look at the curly girl method. This facebook group is great for advice and information www.facebook.com/groups/707494335965428/

My hair is much shinier, less frizzy, has more volume and the curls have better definition since I started following this method.

I also cut my own hair most of the time, it's easier. I just cut it curl by curl after watching a couple of youtube videos.

massi71 · 03/11/2018 21:08

I swear to God that the Curly Girl method will change your life!

Mine was exactly like yours... Now it's silky soft corkscrew curls with zero frizz and lots of shine and definition. And it's long too!

ElfrideSwancourt · 03/11/2018 21:18

Another vote for curly girl method- life-changing for me and DD. It also works out loads cheaper- we only use Wilko conditioner 80p a litre and boots curl cream approx £2.99

elf1985 · 03/11/2018 21:32

Boots have a new range in store called maui moisture. They are silicon and sulfate free. Combined with the curly girl method it was life changing for me.

Pandasarecute · 03/11/2018 22:00

This is really helpful to me as I was thinking of trying this method. Have requested to join the FB group

fishhavefeelingstoo · 04/11/2018 02:38

Thanks! I'll have a look. I did curly girl a while ago and didn't feel my hair was great but will try again.

OGX Argan oil shampoo and conditioner, and the oil from the same brand. I use all three items and my hair is soft and tangle free.

fishhavefeelingstoo · 07/11/2018 14:05

@dragonflies can you recommend any YouTube videos for cutting?

sorry that should read @dragongrass

This leave in conditioner is excellent and what I use on my curly hair:
www.amazon.co.uk/REVLON-PROFESSIONAL-UniqONE-Hair-Treatment/dp/B00M9B66BU?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I spray 3/4 pumps (prob more needed on really long hair) in my palms and smooth through the hair when wet. You won't have a single knot!

AltogetherAndrews · 07/11/2018 14:19

Palmers olive oil shampoo and conditioner, then a leave in conditioner on top of that, preferably a cream based one. I was using the Charles Worthington one, but they seem to have changed the formula, and it’s not as good, so on the hunt for a new one. Never brush it, detangle with a wide toothed comb whilst conditioning, google how to “plop” with a t shirt rather than a towel. Boots curly cream when hair is soaking wet, and Moroccan Oil once it is dry. Also, pineapple your hair at night to minimise tangling.

fishhavefeelingstoo · 07/11/2018 14:26

Thanks. I do pineapple my hair at night, keeps the curls in nicely.
Which Moroccan oil? I've looked at Argan oils but they seem to include silicon.
Is Palmers olive oil silicon free?

AltogetherAndrews · 07/11/2018 14:44

The Palmers shampoo is silicone free, and cheap. Moroccan Oil is the name of the brand, it’s a bit pricey and only available at hairdressers or on line

I think you can get smaller sample bottles to try it out, which is cheaper. It also lasts ages as you only use a tiny bit.

wellhonestly · 07/11/2018 18:22

I use Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner "Ignite my Colour" because I have coloured hair.

I only shampoo once a week, and then comb through the conditioner with a wide-tooth comb.

Every morning however I wet my hair with just water - sometimes just splosh it in the sink (always soak my fringe though), sometimes wet it through with the showerhead - then I wrap it in a towel while I do my other ablutions (clean teeth, insert contact lenses etc), then I apply quite a lot of the conditioner, comb it through, and scrunch the curls up with my hand. The back of my head is a lot drier than the front so I make sure to apply the conditioner there first, and I also twist a couple of sections at the back just to make a couple of defined corkscrews.

Then I bike to work (helmet hair!) so once I get there I go to the bathroom, tip my head upside down, lift the roots with my fingers and give it all a shake. Curls galore!

I have had to train my hairdresser not to layer my hair, it just doesn't work.

wellhonestly · 07/11/2018 18:22

PS forgot important info - I don't rinse the conditioner after applying!

Dragonglass · 07/11/2018 21:20

@fishhavefeelingstoo

This is the video I found helpful. There are others, if you google how to cut your own curly hair, lots come up.

fishhavefeelingstoo · 08/11/2018 08:11

Thanks everyone!

The Moroccan oil isn't within my budget at the moment and I couldn't find samples anywhere.

I'll try all the things mentioned and see how I get on.

OP posts:
AltogetherAndrews · 08/11/2018 15:35

Yeah it’s not cheap, but worth it, and lasts a long time. I’ll have a look and see if I can find the smaller bottles anywhere, they are about £10

AltogetherAndrews · 08/11/2018 15:39

Second one is a small bottle for about £9

PragmaticWench · 08/11/2018 16:45

If you do try Curly Girl then the Maui range isn't 'safe'. The Curly Crew Facebook group has loads of photos of safe conditioners and low poo options.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 08/11/2018 16:49

Go to a hairdresser who knows what they’re doing with curls (get recommendations locally) and ask for layers-this will really help the curls. The Curly Ellie range is excellent-I use the shampoo, conditioner, and then the leave in conditioner, and a microfibre towel (like the kind you take camping) to plop it. Don’t brush it, don’t towel dry, don’t blow dry. Good luck!

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/11/2018 16:50

Cantu stuff is good. Curl activating cream.
