Clothes to compliment.

I'm 5 foot ten and about a size 12-14. I'm struggling to find a nice style of clothes for wearing that compliment me. Also struggle show wise as I hate being tall. But if going out struggle to find nice shoes that aren't heels. Help

Probably better to post in the style and beauty topic, but what kind of shape are you and whose style do you admire?

usertall · 01/11/2018 13:39

I didn't know there was one lol. Sorry. I'm relatively slim. Although still have a bit of a mum tum. I like casual but also smart. X

Long tunics, leggings, flat knee boots, chunky scarf.

I bet you look great in clothes, being tall and slim. Size 12 - 14 in someone of your height is perfect.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 01/11/2018 13:41

But an hourglass shape or more straight up and down? Long legs or long body?

usertall · 01/11/2018 14:08

Not hourglass but not straight up and down either. Long legs and arms. DD boobs.

Sometimes just feel a bit manly compared to dainty petite friends 😪

Any ideas for smart flat shoes that don't look hideous with a dress for going out also ?

usertall · 01/11/2018 15:55

Oh and I'm 29

Hi usertall - we're moving this thread over to our Style & Beauty topic now to hopefully get you a bit more advice. Smile

CaptSkippy · 01/11/2018 17:09

ballet flats?

usertall · 01/11/2018 17:20

Would that look ok with a smart going out dress ?

I'm the same height and size as you OP, I totally get the height thing, especially in heels.
Day to day work-wear for me is wide legged trousers (am slightly pear shaped) with ballet flats or brogues, and a fitted top, and jacket maybe. Or a dress over black jeggings.
Weekends I tend to wear slim fit jeans with chunky boots or Converse, a hip length top or jumper, with a loose longer length kimono cardigan for warmth. If I go out I tend to wear skinnies with a longer top/dress with opaques, and chunky heeled boots. Or jeans with funky kitten heels and a nice top.
I shop the tall ranges at Dorothy Perkins, New Look, jeans and jeggings from M&S, Savannah Miller at Debenhams, Great Plains are fab for dresses and tops that are a bit different. Try M&S for lowish kitten heels and Clarks for boots.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 01/11/2018 21:06

What's the dress like? Maybe a pointed flat?

chezbot · 01/11/2018 21:11

Hi Op. I'm same height and live in Stan Smiths & various boots. This blog is amazing for inspiration enbrogue.com

winterisstillcoming · 01/11/2018 21:18

Ok, it sounds as if you have a fab figure, it's the one you've been blessed with so own it!!

Follow some similar built celebs and stylists and consider a personal shopping trip.

Try loads and loads on and definitely spend some time finding clothes that are the correct colour and fit.

Also remember that a lot of the clothes you like may not be the one that suit you and Vice Versa. I hate mustard but it looks good on me so I've reluctantly allowed it in my wardrobe for example.

CaptSkippy · 02/11/2018 08:22

I think it depends on type of ballet flats you get. I have also worn knee high boots under skirt or dress in the past. Black is usually a safe choice.

CrazySheepLady · 02/11/2018 16:36

I'm quite tall anyway and, due to arthritis in my feet, I can't wear heels. I find pointy, or almond shaped, ballet flats work well with nice dresses. M&S have almond shaped toe flats in just now. I think they're quite flattering as they don't make my feet look even bigger than they already are. Pointy ones do, unfortunately, make my feet look very long.

usertall · 02/11/2018 17:26

I absolutely hate being tall. It annoys me when people say "I wish I was your height" Anyway nothing I can do. Maybe lose a bit of weight and might feel more feminine x

I’m a similar height and one of the things I wear is Stuart Weitzman 50/50s I.e. knee high very narrow and fitted boots which look dressy but are flat: here. I do wear small heels though e.g. wearing toga pulla boots today which have a two inch heel, so not a huge amount of extra height and definitely not drag shoesesque.

I buy some jeans from higher end makes e.g. j brand, Paige picking out the ones with longer inside legs, but very often revert to top shop jeans with 36 inch inside leg.

Me and Em and Baukjen tend to be cut reasonably long and narrow. I have going out tops from both.

Racecardriver · 02/11/2018 17:31

I am your height but one dress size less. I look very good in toast (cut for people our height). Hobbs is also a suitable length. Sea salt sadly can be too short. Heels are a must if you want to wear feminine shoes even if they are little ones, ballet flats are just depressing. I personally go for a more masculine style. I wear a lot of my husbands clothing (again an advantage of being tall). I would say that the key is finding clothes that fit you properly and colours that suit you. If you can afford it just buy a capsule wardrobe from toast. You won’t regret it.

mysteryfairy · 02/11/2018 17:36

I personally find staying slim does help me to feel more presentable. I think a kind of scandi style works quite well as obviously Scandinavians tend to be tall too so big jumpers and skinny jeans with boots etc. I avoid any tunic and leggings type combos, or anything frilly, floral or otherwise fussy. And Other Stories have a ‘Stockholm’ range which can have some good things.

usertall · 02/11/2018 17:56

Just had a look at toast. And to be honest i wasn't impressed. Everything looked so dull and baggy.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/11/2018 17:59

Is there someone whose style you admire? Jus to give people an idea of what your taste is.

usertall · 02/11/2018 18:56

Quite like Kate Middleton casual style. But for going out I prefer something less frumpy.
