How long will it take for my hair to not look like it's been dunked in a chip pan by day 2?

I've been trying to only was my hair every other day for about 2 weeks, and I'm getting impatient. Will it ever manage washing every other day, or ideally longet, without looking rank?

Dry shampoo is your friend. I only wash my hair twice a week. It's dyed blonde baylage and any more and it dries out and becomes frizzy.

YouWereRight · 31/10/2018 22:15

I'm using dry shampoo before bed, but it makes my hair feel grim. It's probably in my head, but I swear my face and hands feel dusty that day too. Will I never get to day 2 without it feeling without being greasy or having that dry shampoo general ming?

Maybe try a different shampoo. If I use a regular high street shampoo then my hair looks greasy within a day, but I can manage 2/3 days with a SLS/paraben free one. My preference is Liz Earle but I'm currently trying to find a solid shampoo my hair will get on along with

Baxdream · 01/11/2018 15:39

Definitely agree with no sulphate/no silicone shampoos. It does work! I'm a complete greaseball and can now manage 5 days! This is insane for me! This does include dry shampoo..

Aussie dry shampoo is also nicer than others imo

OldJoseph · 01/11/2018 17:54

Changing shampoos may never work, I've tried a few and none have made a huge difference. At one point I thought a soap bar really helped but it made my scalp dry and itchy. I can get to day two with dry shampoo though.

However, I now tie my hair back like the picture and although I have mousse in my hair I don't need anything else. I might be able to get to day 3 without washing. M

I’m afraid by day 2 I always end up tying my hair back as it’s gone all greasy. I’ve been washing my hair every other day for years, but it never looks good enough to be worn down after day 1

Snog · 01/11/2018 19:30

Try sleeping with your hair in a bun

theothermum · 01/11/2018 19:35

I have tried washing my hair every other day and it sort of works. I can even get to day three or four if it's a long weekend but the feeling of a freshly washed is amazing so I'm considering going back to washing every day.

RememberUs · 01/11/2018 19:47

I’m trying to get out of my daily wash habit after 35 years!
Hair was short for years and needed product to look good and would be standing on end in the morning.
Now I have a long bob and really don’t want to be drying and styling every day. Currently mostly I can do 2 days if I tie it back, but I feel really dirty by the end of the day.
Can’t use dry shampoo as aerosols make my skin flaky

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 01/11/2018 20:11

Impossible to do.

If you've greasy hair you can maybe get away with every other day, no more. I've tried and it just doesn't work!

MrsBungle · 01/11/2018 20:14

I persevered for 6 weeks. I never got to a point of it feeling ok on day 2. I just wash it every day because it’s so greasy and I like the feeling of freshly washed hair.

JessicaPeach · 01/11/2018 20:15

Use dry shampoo in the morning, not evening. You are missing the benefit by sleeping on it!

YouWereRight · 02/11/2018 09:41

So, it may be a fruitless task. Joy.

I use dry shampoo at night because it seems to work in better if a apply it then. If I apply it in the morning, it stays all stiff and powdery till I was it out.

I sleep with 2 Dutch broads or a top knot because otherwise my hair makes my itchy.

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/11/2018 09:57

2 Dutch broads Grin gosh OP. In terms of hair I wish I knew, I'm desperate to not wash my hair daily, it's long and I can't be added, it takes ages to dry it. I use an SLS free shampoo, helps a bit but nothing makes enough difference. I actually think my day 2 hair looks 'fine' with dry shampoo but I can't bear the grim feeling of it in, especially towards the end of day 2- i'm usually desperate to wash it to feel clean, so may as well just have done it in the morning Envy.

Charlottesshoezzzz · 02/11/2018 10:09

OP I had the same problem. I switched to a shampoo with no parabens & sulphates.
If you do your research into this you will find that these chemicals ( parabens & sulphates ) strip your scalp of natural oils which in return make your scalp produce more oils, hence the greasy hair so soon after washing.

I made the change to said shampoo & I haven't looked back, my hair now lasts to 3/4 days before it looks greasy.

There are specific shampoos which don't contain ingredients mentioned above but I also found great reviews of others using 'Johnson's top to toe baby bath' as the specific shampoos can be expensive compared to Johnson's & through personal experience I find the Johnson's works fab & it's what I've used to wash my hair for the last 6 months & I will continue to do so. It lathers well & does the job .... I use regular conditioner & my hair is fab.

It's the sulphates & parabens in normal shampoo that dry out your scalp & force your head to produce more oil. Try it & see if it works for you as it has for me : )

I have included a pic of the Johnson's I use....

How long will it take for my hair to not look like it's been dunked in a chip pan by day 2?
Charlottesshoezzzz · 02/11/2018 10:18

P.S I have long ombré hair... bleach in the ends. Although the Johnson's feels different to shampoo with ( doesn't feel as moisturising as regular shampoo & hair feels knotty immediately after washing ) this can be counteracted with a good conditioner ( I use Pantene conditioner).

I pump about 5 squirts & do a mini hair scrub first, then rinse, then I find the 2nd scrub / wash lathers up better & really well.

I am a total product junkie, if someone would have told me a year ago that I was going to switch to Johnson's baby wash for shampoo I would have totally screwed my nose up lol.... but for me it's been a life changer... no more itchy scalp, no more excessive greasiness .... and even with bleached ends my hair still looks & feels great 👍🏻

BiscuitDrama · 02/11/2018 10:21

I’m also doing better with SLS etc free shampoos.

There are a few nice ones here
www.gentlebubbles.com/buy-phthalate-free-products/sulfate-paraben-phthalate-free-shampoo/

The Jason is probably the gentlest and therefore strips your hair least. The Faith in Nature is also nice, and cheap. Avalon smells lovely!

BiscuitDrama · 02/11/2018 10:26

And having reread your post, are you using too much dry shampoo if it’s dusty looking if you apply it in the morning?
Try a lighter hand maybe. Spray it in, wait a minute and then tousle it through a bit.

Charlottesshoezzzz · 02/11/2018 10:27

@BiscuitDrama honestly it's been a total life changer for me, I've been using Johnson's for about 6 months now & I can't ever see me changing. I notice the difference in my scalp ( drying & greasiness ) if I wash with normal shampoo just once!

BiscuitDrama · 02/11/2018 10:29

My scalp is also a lot happier! It used to be really flaky. Yuk. It took me nearly a while bottle of Avalon shampoo before I saw a difference, interestingly. But now it’s great.

NotAQueef · 02/11/2018 10:30

Are you sure you're applying the dry shampoo correctly. It shouldn't feel dusty.

Shake lots, small sections, spray rub in around roots, continue round head. Brush out excess. - have never felt dusty doing it like this.

Troika · 02/11/2018 10:31

I’ve washed my hair only every other day for at least three years and it still needs to be tied up and looks and feels greasy on day two. All this your scalp adjusts stuff is rubbish!
I’ve only stuck with it because I try to make the time the dye covers the grey longer!

DameDoom · 02/11/2018 10:34

Dry shampoo doesn't work for me at all - I get greasy straw if that's even possible! I have to wash every day and have tried sulphate free etc. to no avail. Philip Kingsley's website recommends washing every day. I do it because I have to but it is a pain.

newdocket · 02/11/2018 10:37

I could have written your post OP. I am a complete greaseball by the morning of day 2. Have been using SLS/paraben free stuff for weeks and so far no improvement whatsoever!

Sorry, that's not really helpful is it? I feel your pain though!
