Messy bun

Why am I the only person in the world who can't do this? I have to wash my hair each day but still I can't do this and it always looks crap! Where am I going wrong?

Is your hair too clean? Washing it makes it slippy and you need a bit of grease in there to make it stay up well!

Is your hair fine or thick? Can you share a pic of what you're trying to achieve as your idea of the perfect messy bun might be completely different to someone else's.

alittlebitofritasallineed · 25/10/2018 11:03

Yes my hair is cleaned every day and so it is shiny, it's also quite thin so not the best combination...

A messy bun works best in 1 or 2 day old hair. Freshly washed hair is too clean and slippy and won't be as easy to put up.

Dry shampoo might help.

You need either thick hair or lots of fine hair to do a successful full looking bun imo. If your hair is thin/not plentiful they tend to look a bit sad.

sailorvenus · 25/10/2018 11:24

High pony
Unwashed hair or spray with dry shampoo
Twist and coil into itself like a cinnamon roll
Fasten a hairband around your cinnamon roll
Fiddle with your cinnamon roll to make it poofy

But as a pp said you need thick hair or lots of hair or they look a bit sad. After I've had my layers trimmed my messy buns look a bit pathetic.

folduptheocean · 25/10/2018 11:33

When I had long hair I would use a doughnut to get this effect

POPholditdown · 25/10/2018 11:33

Urgh I have fine hair, lots if it but it’s just so floppy. The only way I can do a messy bun is with sea salt spray or just plain hairspray to cement it in place, but my head just ends up feeling disgusting. I don’t need a lot if product on for my hair to feel loaded.

Even if it’s not just washed or if I use dry shampoo, it just flops sideways, like sad puppy ears.

Cheesymonster · 25/10/2018 13:14

I have thin fine hair and I can only do a bun with a very small hair donut I bought from primark. I put dry shampoo on it first then put it in a high ponytail with a small band. Then put donut over the ponytail. Then bend forward and spread hair over donut to cover it. Then I take an invisi bobble and secure hair to donut, the messier this is the better it looks. Then twist loose ends round and secure with Kirby grips.

AjasLipstick · 25/10/2018 13:59

If it's fine then you probably need to add volume OP. A messy bun looks best on thick hair. A hair donut will help you. As will adding some big curls to your hair and then running your fingers through.

lifebeginz · 25/10/2018 14:00

I can't do one either but my hair is so fine I htink that i sthe problem. A donut usually helps...I bought one that has the hair over it so you couldn't see the mesh but it is heavy in comparison to just the mesh ones...

SapphireSeptember · 25/10/2018 14:14

I have thin fine hair that I wash everyday too, I use two thick elastic hair bands that I wrap around my hair three times each when I put it into the ponytail, wind the ponytail up, and then use two telephone cord hair bands to secure it, they get wrapped around three times each (my hair is very long, so hair doughnuts don't really work for me.) This combination means my hair stays up all day.

squishee · 25/10/2018 14:36

I had trouble getting the hang of these, until I bought Invisibobbles (similar -but inferior- products are available!)

Use one to put up high ponytail fairly loosely so still comfortable
Twist ponytail around itself
Wind twisted ponytail around the coils of the Invisibobble
Take a second Invisibobble and wrap it around the outside to secure the bun (it goes twice around for me)
Once you let go, you will feel the outer Invisibobble close around your bun as the coils tighten and pull the whole mass of hair in and up, by itself. It feels a bit odd but lovely!
Adjust tightness for comfort.

Very quick and easy. I did my bun this way every day during the heatwave, and it nearly always held all day in my long thick hair.

alittlebitofritasallineed · 25/10/2018 14:47

Are those telephone wire bands good then? I've always thought they'd just make a knotty mess? I didn't "get" the design..?

I can't do any sort of bun - I've got plenty of hair but it's quite fine and dead straight. It just looks a mess rather than 'messy' if it's not tidy. I reckon 'messy buns' only work well with somewhat curly hair.

Cheesymonster · 25/10/2018 17:12

If you search on Pinterest for messy buns you’ll find lots of helpful tips.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/10/2018 17:46

My problem is that most the messy buns grab all the hair away from the face and I don't suit that. Im no good at it either. Oh and I have tried and tried.

Thistles24 · 25/10/2018 22:31

I use a sock to do my messy bun, chop off the toe then pop it on your wrist as if it’s a bobble. Do your hair in a ponytail where you want your bun, then put the sock over the top of the ponytail. Roll it towards your scalp, tucking the hair in as you go. Once you reach your head just use kirbys to secure if needed. I have thick hair, and find a donut gives me too big a bun, and not a messy effect. The sock is much thinner and stays in place- it’s yet to fail me. Try pintrest if you need images.

OhNoGroken · 25/10/2018 22:45

I have fine hair, I often wear a messy bun, I swear by dry shampoo (specifically the batiste volume one) and look at missysue.com/ - she has a pretty annoying voice but her video tutorials are great and she has a nice easy ‘signature messy bun’ that’s easy when you get the hang of it, and there are great ways to style it differently so that the same messy bun has different variations. Some things take a bit of practice but it’s worth it as I can have great looking hair very quickly now.

bumblebee39 · 25/10/2018 23:09

A good volumising blow dry when you wash it
Wait a day
Wait another day
Dry shampoo it like a mo fo
Don't brush it (unless to back comb around your crown a bit)
Tie in pony tail tight then in bun once- pull it out a bit so it's messy
Do not look in the mirror
Feel around for any strays and grip them back.
Pull it a bit looser again
Hair spray a light mist from a distance
Now look in the mirror
*Do not touch it or try to make it perfect
*
Or just do what everyone else does and miss most of that steps, don't brush your hair for a couple days, tie it up in a bun quickly and leave the house without looking...

MaryJenson · 26/10/2018 07:52

I don’t think I’m allowed to link bit Thame a look at the small things blog

MaryJenson · 26/10/2018 07:52

but take

Karrwomannghia · 26/10/2018 07:57

Yes agree with all the others, don’t do it all in one band, you have to do the ponytail first and then the bun with another band. Makes a big difference.

TillyVonMilly · 26/10/2018 09:27

Have you tried something like this? I used to use them as a very quick and easy messy bun.

Messy bun
pouraglasshalffull · 26/10/2018 09:38

I put my hair in a ponytail
Backcomb the ponytail for added texture and grip
Twist it round in a cinnamon bun style
put another bobble and grip in place

frugalkitty · 26/10/2018 10:45

I thought the invisibobbles were a great idea until one of the kids I was teaching asked me why I had loom bands in my hair Confused

Chelsea26 · 26/10/2018 11:04

An alternative for fine hair is to pull it into a high ponytail but don’t pull your hair all the way through on the last turn so you end up with a loop of hair. You then spread the loop out and pin it down, looks like lots of hair but is mostly air!
