What can I wear on a night out that won’t make me look big?

Average height, size 12-14 so not huge but all my friends are tiny size 8s. I feel massive whenever we go out and I never seem to pick the right clothes to make me feel slim however carefully I think I’ve chosen.

Hourglass figure but with big shoulders and boobs and a tendency to gain weight on my upper abdomen (rather than lower on my tummy, which would be fairly easily camouflaged). HELP Sad (please)

Knee length pencil skirt. Tight top, tucked in, scoop neck, mid arm length sleeves. High heels.

Preferably black/navy.

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 17/10/2018 21:30

Wide belt too.

Bluntness100 · 17/10/2018 21:33

Skinny jeans, high boots, a sleeveless top and a loose soft blazer...make it all the one colour, indigo, charcoal that kind of thing,

ProudThrilledHappy · 17/10/2018 21:35

Aim for Joan in Mad Men and flaunt what you have Grin

Cherries101 · 17/10/2018 21:35

Depends where you’re going. What are your arms like? If going to a club, with your figure, I’d choose a backless longsleeved mini dress and the highest heels you could stand.

HeddaGarbled · 17/10/2018 21:43

Agree with PP above - you should dress to enhance your assets not try and look like people with completely different body shapes. Hour glass figure and big boobs are enviable. Show them off, don’t try and hide them. How about a V neck dress to show a bit of cleavage?

ProudThrilledHappy · 17/10/2018 21:52

Have a look at Lindybop...

www.lindybop.co.uk/bella-red.html

Their dresses pack personality and are great for busty women

A skater dress with long sleeves ,leggings, im a size 12 and it does make me look smaller & makes me feel better about myself x

OrangePeppers · 17/10/2018 23:06

I don’t think pencil skirt and tight top would work. That’s what I used to wear at a stone or so lighter and it looked great, but it just makes me look lumpy now I’ve gained weight around my...whatever the upper abdomen area is called. Also, my arms are bad so I can’t do sleeveless. Skater dress can be ok, but again, they cling to the upper abdomen which isn’t great for me (really wish I stored weight on my lower abdomen as a skater dress camouflages that perfectly). At a size 10-12 I felt sexy and curvy, but as a 12-14 I just feel lumpy and matronly.

U can get skater dresses with flow type sleeves that are not so tight or even skater dress with no sleeve then wear a cropped cardign. Smock dresses maybe better fit as it wouldnt cling so much to a upper abdoman.
If you more into jeans then go skinny black with a black top that isnt fitted then get a fitted blazer in a colour.x

What's the slimmest bit of you? Pick that to accentuate. If your legs and bum are OK then definitely go for that and some sort of draped top. Not all draped tops have to look frumpy, if you pick one that's got some sort of detailing on it such as a choker neck, studs (subtle), maybe a foil print etc. Basically nothing that you would easily wear in the daytime. Skinnies and good ankle boots (stilletto, needn't be sky high but have a thin heel). A nod at a rock chick. Make the details do the work and keep the actual silhoutte flattering.

Pulling in at the waist can actually accentuate a heavier bust and top half, so I'd personally steer clear of the Lindybop style - unless you are petite as for some reason curvy busty petite women look cute in that style, but on those of average height to tall it can look all too much fabric and a bit galumphing.

Blazer on top as per a previous poster's idea is a great idea especially with the 3/4 sleeves or pushed up sleeves.

FellSwoop · 18/10/2018 14:44

I had 3 of them in black, red and dark green.

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 18/10/2018 15:35

That dress is gorgeous, fellswoop

OrangePeppers · 18/10/2018 16:31

That’s a lovely dress fellswoop! Does it not accentuate big shoulders though? I feel like it would, but I could be wrong.

Please for the love of god do not buy anything from Lindy effing Bop! You’ll look like you’re in fancy dress.

It’s always recommended on here and unless you’re a 1940/50s screen siren hair waved, retro babe it just looks like fancy dress!

I have been to so many wedding where your average jo(sephine) has been in such garb it looks daft! So out of place

Kimono dress would be lush!

How about high waisted mom jeans, heels of some kind, slinky top with a leather jacket or blazer?

thedevilinablackdress · 18/10/2018 18:36

What sort of night out is it?
Do you want trousers, jeans, dress...?
What sort of colours do you like?
If in doubt, weeks something low-key that you're comfortable in with great jewellery, lipstick and a smile 😀

Cherrypie32 · 18/10/2018 19:34

Totally agree with Atalune tuxedo style blazers are very in, long line and very forgiving with a crepe or silk cami under (not clingy) don’t take your jacket off. Black jeans or coated skinnies and boots (which could be a pop of colour, or leopard or snakeskin)

FellSwoop · 19/10/2018 10:57

No, it really doesn't as the neckline and low V back breaks up the shoulderline considerably and the kimono sleeves hang all floaty and drapey down so your eye is not on the shoulder...if you see what I mean?

FellSwoop · 19/10/2018 11:00

Totally agree re the Lindy Bop sentiments...plus they're badly made and have really short bodices, rendering them waistless on anyone with larger bust.

Bluntness100 · 19/10/2018 11:03

I'd also agree re lindy bop. Those dresses scream I think I'm fat so can't dress normally and will dress like a fifties throw back. Sigh.
