What cut do you have and how do you style it?
After years of long hair I had a bob which I liked but am growing out. It’s now shoulder length and I’m looking for inspiration.

No idea but I’m in the same position and would also like to know!

AgentProvocateur · 09/10/2018 19:06

Me too. And worse - I’m living in a hot country where it’s incredibly humid!

fadingfast · 09/10/2018 19:10

Mine is currently shoulder-length with long layers but I'm soooo bored of it. Every time I raise the possibility of cutting it shorter my poor hairdresser patiently explains that to have a shorter cut will mean more styling required (which I'd rather not do) so I just settle for the same old boring cut. Would also love some inspiration but I'm just too lazy Grin

zippyswife · 09/10/2018 19:41

The bob I had was really nice. The handy thing with this kind of hair (for me anyway) is that once styled it holds its style and doesn’t need washing for days. So I would straighten it with ghds and it would look decent enough for near on a week.

Not me but dd and she wears it very long (waist length) which weighs the curls down so they're less sticky out, she sometimes straightens too when she has time (takes ages to wash and dry).

She once years ago tried shorter but it was murder to keep tidy.

She does also use frizz taming products.

Hellywelly10 · 09/10/2018 19:55

Short asymetric pixie. I had a wavy bob for years!

GVmama · 09/10/2018 20:09

I switched to co-washing and Curly Girl friendly products, and found that my hair actually has a strong wave and has been reacting badly to the sls in normal shampoo for the whole of my life.
If you can get your head around it, washing with (silicone-free) conditioner instead of shampoo is a game changer and could transform your hair in a way you would never have thought possible Smile

GVmama · 09/10/2018 20:13

Sorry, I kind of missed the point if your post Blush
Anyway, once you deal with the frizz your hair can take all sorts of styles. I now have lots of layers through shoulder length hair, it makes the most of my wave. I could not have had layers before switching to Curly Girl friendly products, they looked awful.

DoctorNicoleWatterson · 09/10/2018 20:16

Was coming on to say exactly the same as GVmama, Curly Girl Method.

The main thing that's helped is stopping brushing my hair when dry. I only brush whilst it has conditioner in, add gel to soaking wet hair, scrunch with a t-shirt and leave to dry. Turns out what I thought was frizz can actually be curls.

ImNotonLinkedInNo · 09/10/2018 20:17

I got my hair cut like this but it sits completely differently. It stands up a lot and is thick, curly-ish, frizzy-ish. I just let it do its own thing and own it now. I heard a black character on a film say that her hair was like a second job and I felt like I could empathise. I'd been straightening my hair every day and it still wasn't straight. I have embraced not only curl (because it's not that curly really) but embraced the 'body' Grin
I look like I've been electrocuted but I don't look like I'm addicted to hair straighteners either.

The film was called nappily ever after on netflix.

ImNotonLinkedInNo · 09/10/2018 20:21

Sits a bit like this but shorter at the back

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Brazilian blow dry. Have been having this done now every three months for two years and it's taken the frizz out completely, so I can have any style I like!
Will try the silicone free conditioner as mentioned up thread too - thanks!!

DrapesCoe · 09/10/2018 20:38

I have mine long with a few long layers. Because it is so thick I can look like Crystal Tips 😬 . Try products for African Caribbean hair - just be careful to wash out well and don't put the conditioner on your roots xx

zippyswife · 09/10/2018 21:00

I love your hair imnot my hair is crazy frizz though rather than nice waves or I would be after that myself.
I did try the curly girl method when my hair was shoulder length. It was hit and miss and my hair seemed dry and in bad condition. In the end I threw the towel on though I still co wash and use curly girl approved conditioner.

helly what does your pixie look like? Do you straighten it?

ddog I had the Brazilian blow dry once and was really disappointed. I couldn’t tell much of a difference. Maybe I need to try it again?

I have my hair done with Xstenso, which is a bit like Brazilian blow dry. It has changed my life.

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 09/10/2018 21:05

Mine sits just below my shoulder. Left to its own devices it looks like I've had an electric shock. All over the place, thick, frizzy, random curlyness. I use moroccanoil then blow dry at night and then put in 6 scrunchie-boo-boos at night and in the morning I have really nice curls. A wee spray with product and it's lovely.

zippyswife · 09/10/2018 21:09

What are scrunchie boo boos?

Does the Brazilian or Xstenso damage the hair? My hair is in bad shape after a balayage so I’m trying to get it healthier if possible.

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 09/10/2018 21:21

@zippyswife

Scrunchie boo-boos are a hair accessory i got at a craft fair. They were made for putting hair up into a bun, but a side effect is lovely curls! So that's why I got them and they are so much more comfy to sleep in than rollers. They're made by 2 ladies in Scotland and you can get them from etsy.

IntentsAndPorpoises · 09/10/2018 21:23

@zippyswife no, not that I've noticed. I've had it for 2 or 3 years now, every 4 months.

I have some split ends when I need a trim, but other than that.

zippyswife · 09/10/2018 21:39

@intents do you have it done at a salon? What kind of price is it? Do you still have to straighten it or can you wash and leave?

OP posts:
IntentsAndPorpoises · 09/10/2018 21:42

Yes in a salon. It's £96 every 4 months. I can just leave it, roughly blown dry it.

And I can get it wet in the rain and it doesn't fuzz up. I don't work for them, honest, it has genuinely changed my life.

Hassled · 09/10/2018 21:45

I have the short at the back, long at the sides thing, and my hairdresser uses these miraculous thinner scissors (half razor half scissor?). I quite like it - anything else basically becomes a giant frizzy triangle of hair.

zippyswife · 09/10/2018 22:19

@Hassled- that sounds great. I need a new hairdresser. She said my hair needed to be thinned to just thinned out the bottom 2 inches of my hair and it looks scraggly and in bad condition. I need a good hairdresser that is happy to take the weight out.

@intents- I’m struggling to find a salon that does Xstenso. Is it called anything else? Everywhere seems to do the Brazilian but I’m struggling to find that one!
