Who or what do you aim to look like on a night out?

I’m about to get ready for a rare night out. My sense of style is so mixed- like the safe Hush look but I used to be more edgy but I’m early 40s and can’t get away with the kind of look I used to...

Anyway what kind of look do you go for on a night out?

My look at the moment is muddled!
I am mid thirties and find 'dressing up' for a night out hard going. I feel too old for the full on low cut top bling fest but too young to give up and be totally plain.
I went out last night in a long sleeve playsuit with thick black tights underneath.
I felt okay but feel I've had better outfits, not helpful to you sorry but I know how you feel 😳

Richlyfruited · 06/10/2018 20:12

Very similar to you in taste I think OP. Used to dress very differently but now I like quite a safe, polished look when I go out. It does depend on where I'm going though!

What's the occasion? Jeans or something smarter?

CountFosco · 06/10/2018 20:45

Depends where you're going but don't worry about your age, wear the clothes you love and you'll look great. I'm older than you and think the older you get the more you can own an edgy look. How can a 20 year old be edgy? They haven't lived. But a middle aged woman who doesn't give a shit because of her life experience is way more able to carry that off.

Be yourself.
An original is worth more than a copy.

I am for vaguely sane but don't always achieve it.

tappitytaptap · 07/10/2018 07:09

I'm 33 and struggle with this! I think I look pretty good in the day but always feel a bit 'behind' with an evening look (so sorry, no helpful advice!). I don't have to worry much right now as I have a 10 day old so not many evenings out planned Wink. Watching this thread with interest!

JeezYouLoon · 07/10/2018 07:40

I aim for not looking like a bag of shite Wink

I've just dug out my autumn/winter clothes and had a massive clear out. I have hardly anything left, however it's all stuff I actually wear and importantly fits me properly. Currently 'fashion' doesn't appear to be high on my agenda.

zippyswife · 07/10/2018 09:28

I wore (fake) leather trousers a cami and a black jacket with heels. It looked alright I think but I was self conscious anyway.

Late 40s here - I try to look polished and a little bit edgy. So black or dark grey, chunky silver jewellery and heels. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I find it a bit easier since I had my hair cut shorter. Like a previous poster said, I feel too old for a full-on BlingFest .....

AbeautifulBeast · 07/10/2018 13:07

zippyswife that sounds lovely, I might aim for that when I go out next!

zippyswife · 07/10/2018 18:11

Thank you. It looked ok. I rarely go out so I rarely have this problem.

I went out last night and struggled with what to wear. I'm 41 and I've put a bit of weight on (which I'm slowly losing) I actually wore a long sleeved short black dress it's baggy on top then a fitted skirt.
I'm usually a jeans and blazer kind of person but I got lots of compliments and felt nice.

SouthWestmom · 07/10/2018 18:31

I think you can look edgy at any age surely.
My look is all saints/label lab/light piercings etc.

Disabrie22 · 07/10/2018 19:24

Abeautiful beast can you post a picture of the playsuit?

Kaykay06 · 07/10/2018 20:49

I have an idea in my head of what I’d like to look like and the ‘look’ I aspire to. But I end up just looking a bit hotchpotch think losing weight will help with my style choices as I feel nothing looks ‘right’ and fits well at the moment. Think we put too much pressure on ourselves.

Depending on the occasion I go between black jeans, high boots, nice top and leather jacket hair blow dried. Or nice dress, hold ups killer heels and make up done, I have too many clothes and I really need to get into them.

RonaldMcDonald · 08/10/2018 01:20

I want to look to cool to approach - this hides my crippling anxiety

user1457017537 · 08/10/2018 03:44

Can you aim for a more glamorous look than normal. So if you can get your nails done and a blow dry. Make up more dramatic than normal.

unbalancedBella · 08/10/2018 08:12

I too like the sound of ABeautiful's playsuit.

Late 40s and rarely go out so tend to go for it when I do. Last time I wore a short-ish smock dress with suede over knee boots. Got some nice comments.

Thebluedog · 08/10/2018 14:30

Now I’m in my mid 40s i tend to wear what suits me rather than what’s on trend (if you even say that). I used to go for the sexy, slightly rock chick, which I still do, but I’m aware that I’m now in my 40s and slightly overweight, so can’t pull it off as well, so I’ll still go for skinny black trousers, some killer heels, but I’ll go for a slightly more classy top that suits and flatters my shape, understated accessories and I’ve long blonde hair that I wear down.

Thebluedog · 08/10/2018 14:32

Last Christmas we had a day out in a major city and I wore black leggings with a black wrap longline jumper and thigh high boots. I felt good in that.

bluetrampolines · 08/10/2018 14:39

I love this thread. I cant read it properly because i don't go out because i don't know how to look On a night out.

Gah81 · 08/10/2018 18:13

Usually aim for 40s/50s femme fatale. God only knows where I actually end up Grin

Am a slim hourglass but love the draping, pencil skirts, flesh-covering-but-form-fitting approach. With the focus firmly on my waist. So soft, low-back blouse tucked into a pencil skirt, draped vintage 40s dress, long sleeve, almost-off-the-shoulder midi pencil dress etc. are my go-to outfits for a night bar-hopping. Nipped in with a belt or a 50s wasp-waist jacket.

Add big red curly hair (all natural) and a bit of drama (cape coat/red lips/statement earrings/brocade jacket) and some pointed flats/low LOW heels) and that is me done for an evening out.

I live in London and go to some nice places so not often too overdressed but honestly, I probably am pushing the envelope a fair bit and don't care. Life is short and I love dressing the way I do :)

Allaboutevie · 08/10/2018 18:15

I'm 42 and favour a jumpsuit on a night out, wore this one last time by pop boutique. Comfortable and flattering, but make sure the door locks when you go to the loo!

AbeautifulBeast · 08/10/2018 18:50

This is the playsuit for those that asked!

Barbayagar · 08/10/2018 20:48

Just a better version of daytime me I suppose, mildly fashionable and hopefully not too bag woman like. I only really go to the village pub though!
