How do I dress like this Japanese woman?

There's a woman in the playground at pick up time. She's Japanese, very quiet and unassuming. Mid thirties I think.
Her style is amazing. She wears lots of wool and natural fabrics, cocoon style coats, asymmetric wool dresses and they hang beautifully on her. Her clothes look almost futuristic in style. Everything in gorgeous muted tones and slightly too big for her.
Where does I even start to look for these sort of clothes? Any ideas?

Yeah. She gets changed more often than not by the time I see her in the afternoons. Sometimes she hadn't changed, but mostly she does.

Wow, imagine the laundry! Does she dress her child/children equally fabulously?!

Floaty2018 · 03/10/2018 21:26

This thread is brilliant. OP please make friends with this lady so we can swoon over her style in more detail!

harvestwheat · 03/10/2018 21:29

Interested

MaxMara often do structured-yet-unfitted dresses that skim without swamping or clinging. Cos is good for less expensive clothing, and they often do more exciting, asymmetric shapes, but the fabric mightn't be as good. I've had good stuff out of Muji (and if the clothes don't come through for you, the household goods and stationery is satisfying).

Looking smoking hot this morning!

Long dark perfectly shiny hair worn down today. Black bandeau bra top. Over the top she had a tight fitting soft black leather shirt/top thing that made a deep v right down to her navel. Can't think how to describe it! It was really plain and collarless with long sleeves.
This was tucked in to a black and white stripe pleated skirt that was all swishy when she moved. Think maybe the skirt was Issey Miyake?
Different from her usual look today... more dressed up. She must be off somewhere.

She stuck out on the playground like a beacon today. The rest of them had shit hair and a hoodie on. I try to make more effort but still felt like a polished turd when I saw her.

Well, if she wasn’t on MN before, she probably knows about it now! (Forgotten the term for ruining an experiment by carrying out the experiment.)

Littlechocola · 04/10/2018 10:10

I wonder if she’s a mner!

BrightonGallery7 · 04/10/2018 10:27

It must depend on your school. It is possible to see UK natives looking very chic in the school run! Not everyone rocks up in a hoodie with “shit hair”.Hmm

BrightonGallery7 · 04/10/2018 10:27

OMG fab thread OP

Storm4star · 04/10/2018 10:45

I've been to Tokyo a few times and the women there always look amazing. As you say, they make it look so effortless. I am unfortunately nowhere near a Japanese shape! Although I have bought some tops there that fit, and I always get compliments on them.

They look like any other bunch of random women.

WatsonCat · 04/10/2018 16:23

She sounds very wealthy! Is it a private school, OP?

I have something by Sahara. Plumo is good for the odd thing, mainly inspiration. Toast is strangely compelling but I hardly ever order any more (skint and doubt it would look good on me). I love Uniqlo and Muji.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/10/2018 06:56

COS and uni glo

daftyburd · 05/10/2018 07:59

Monki sometimes have that sort of dress. They are Scandinavian trying to emulate Japanese style. Plus they are as cheap as chips.

AbeautifulBeast · 05/10/2018 10:37

BrightonGallery7 they really don't, they look very well dressed and if that's the best picture you can find to prove your point I think it's way off the mark 🤨

JaneR0chester · 05/10/2018 10:48

itchy thank you for this thread! She You have been an inspiration Grin Flowers

I too love that minimalist look. Unfortunately my matronly bust will never allow me to achieve it. However I do have a few select Cos items which fit the spare / pared down aesthetics you describe. But as with all things Cos, best to try on in person rather than buy online.

I love Uniqlo and have gone a bit mad in there recently. But the shaggy fleece coat I have my eye on is more for warmth than style I fear.

Keep up the good work daily stalking

There's a whole load of people out there in the blogosphere making clothes from Japanese patterns. The sewing/crafting scene in Japan is INSANE (as in huge - think enormous stores devoted to everything you could ever possibly need, and then some).

Take a look at the Japanese sewing patterns website, which reviews the books of patterns you can buy there. If you go to the homepage you can scroll through the whole lot for inspiration.

Do you sew, or do you know anyone who can sew? It's fairly easy to get hold of these books over here now.

I'm a giant by Japanese standards so even MUJI's very largest sizes wouldn't come anywhere near me when I visited (but the flagship Tokyo store is incredible 😍😍😍😍)

Mercurial123 · 05/10/2018 11:03

I don't understand why Muji in Europe is so poor compared to the Asian stores. I'm in Bangkok early next year so will be buying clothes over there. I wish they would extend the range outside of Asia.

Peartree17 · 05/10/2018 15:58

this thread has sent me off to the Cos home page (Actually, I visited Joseph first but my days of spending £450 on a dress are behind me, alas) and I realise, with joy, that I have versions of practically all these items, except that big funnel necked top which looks just the ticket. I am going to spend tonight polishing my shoes and boots to a high shine, ironing my shirts and co-ordinating outfits. I need to get some trousers taken up so I can wear them with flats. I am upping my game! Inspiring thread, OP! www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/essentials.html

LunaTheCat · 05/10/2018 22:03

Has anyone tried any Japanese Cosmetics? I was given a sample of Tatchka rice polish cleanser - amazing stuff. It will be my new splurge when I nextneed a cleanser

Crazydaisy000 · 05/10/2018 22:27

An amazing threat.. please update with find and ideas, I will go through my wardrobe and see what I have to replicate that composed look.. too tall to be a real Japanese beauty
