How do I dress like this Japanese woman?

There's a woman in the playground at pick up time. She's Japanese, very quiet and unassuming. Mid thirties I think.
Her style is amazing. She wears lots of wool and natural fabrics, cocoon style coats, asymmetric wool dresses and they hang beautifully on her. Her clothes look almost futuristic in style. Everything in gorgeous muted tones and slightly too big for her.
Where does I even start to look for these sort of clothes? Any ideas?

Jaimx, that's nice and something I could see her wearing. But the tunic was like felt but looked soft like cashmere, and it was a deep brown colour. It didn't have a roll neck, it had a stand up collar, like a funnel neck.
She looked fab! My newest pastime is watching what she's wearing today and running home to google.

Also love this look. Sadly I'm quite dumpy after giving birth for the third time two months ago.
Does the muji site normally have hardly any clothes on it?

Annasgirl · 02/10/2018 15:31

Please tell us where she shops when you find out. When I find a style crush I always ask them where they shop. Even if it is too expensive, it can give you ideas for something you can buy at a more reasonable place.

Littlechocola · 02/10/2018 15:44

I wish I was a person that oozed glamour

itchybumhole · 02/10/2018 17:23

I asked her. She was very sweet and although there was a bit of a language barrier she said she buys most of her clothes in Tokyo when she returns twice a year.

She said in the UK she just goes to John Lewis and buys pieces she likes regardless of who makes them. Today she had on a rust coloured cord dress from Anthropologie, Joseph cardigan and black boots.

So still none the wiser I'm afraid. It looks like you have to have an innate sense of style to look like this lady, you can't just rock up to one shop and buy the look off the peg. Sad

Well I doubt she got all her clothes in just one shop anyway! You got to hunt....clothes hunting is fun.

Even though you didn’t get far you sort of have a better idea of what style it is you want to work towards....me I have no style and don’t even know what style I like!!

Agree, if I put that Anthropologie dress on I'd look like I'd turned Amish and was yearning for the return of little house on the prairie.

There is some things that very very few people can pull off. That's one of them.

Maybe op look at blogs, spend some time trying on different clothes you'd not usually wear, and find a style that is all you? I'm sure you look great, but if you're looking for something different, have some fun trying,,,

Ballbags · 02/10/2018 18:30

Try bluebluejapan.com/english/collection/?s=f

Almahart · 02/10/2018 18:37

Have a look at Plumo, I got an email from them about a Japanese collection. They often have Japanese style trousers

thornyhousewife · 02/10/2018 18:50

You need to start by having a very small frame, with particularly narrow shoulders.

itchybumhole · 02/10/2018 20:46

Jesus Christ! Not that monstrosity, no. 😆 She said it was from Anthropologie, at least that's what I think I heard.

try looking at Sahara online. They have some nice Moyuru stuff sometimes

Bluntness100 · 02/10/2018 20:52

Well that's a relief.

I feel it's time.

It's diagram time. You need to draw her outfits 😝

Melfish · 02/10/2018 20:58

I was lucky enough to go to Japan this year. Muji in Japan have loads of clothes- everything from underwear to jumpers, coats etc. As a size 12 I managed to get a couple of things in an XL, but my tiny 10 year old DD fitted into some of the XS women’s size. I think the UK Muji have more regular sizing, I have a couple of things from there in M or L depending on fit.
I would love to channel the slightly random but neat Japanese look, but my hair is too scruffy and I am too large and gangly to pull it off.

Floisme · 03/10/2018 07:32

I think we may be getting unduly pessimistic. My leg aren't as long as Katharine Hepburn's but I can still be inspired by her style and incorporate bits of it.

I'd look for European labels that are used to Western style and physiques but Japanese influenced. A lot of them have already been mentioned:
Uniqlo (ok they really are Japanese) do these 3D knits that are kind of cocoon shaped and based on Japanese knitting techniques. Or their U range by Christophe Lemaire - I don't like the latest collection as much but it still goes in for interesting shapes and silhouettes.
Kin at John Lewis openly talks about Japanese influences.
Some of the Scandi brands, although the only ones I can think of pre-coffee are the Cos/Arkett/Other Stories/H&M stable.
Bits of Me and Em and maybe some Whistles although I've not looked there for a while.
I'm partial to a bit of Rundholz - it's expensive and I don't know many stockists in the UK but they do that sculptural thing a lot.

I think it's all over once you start looking. I do find that when I'm trying something new, I need to go to real shops because there's a lot of trying on involved and online just doesn't cut it.

Love this thread; am on my way to town and am going to stop in at uniqlo and try something that I wouldn’t have considered before. I do admire the Japanese style; when I was in Tokyo I felt the women dressed comfortably, modestly and looked ever so chic

Bloobs · 03/10/2018 14:51

Cos
Arket
Muji
& Other Stories

When I was last in London I went into & Other Stories and there were several women walking around with this kind of style who I was admiring!

I also love the Japanese sewing pattern books by Yoshiko Tsukiori, which have lots of this type of things to make.

And also the Japanese brand Mina Perhonen - swoon! Hard to get and very expensive, but have a look on ebay.

macnab · 03/10/2018 15:11

Your style crush sounds fab OP! Please report her outfits here on a daily basis Grin - take photos if you can, you can edit out her face joking not joking

Littlechocola · 03/10/2018 15:50

What was she wearing today op?

itchybumhole · 03/10/2018 19:25

She was pretty dressed down this morning. She had on faded black skinny jeans, a cropped beige jumper (again looked cashmere) and a really plain collarless black bomber jacket.

This afternoon she upped her game again though. She had on an amazing cream long sleeve dress. It was a woven type fabric, came to just above the knee and had a cowl neck. Looked really soft and just hung off her perfectly. She had bare legs (brrrrrr) and little felt looking brown ankle boots on. She reminded me of Barbarella this afternoon - a bit futuristic, but very sexy with it.

I hate her love her.

Does she wear 2 outfits every day?! ShockSounds amazing though, and more outfits for us to lust after!
