Raincoat for 20 year old dd

gemandjule · 19/09/2018 18:31

I know she’s an adult but bear with me!
My DD is in second year in university. She has to walk approximately 30 minutes to lectures each way every day. We’re heading into winter and it rains A LOT where she is. She refuses to spend money on a raincoat that’s not cool and I think she needs a good coat. Help me find a good, not too expensive coat for a petite, size 8 fashion conscious wet 20 year old 😃

What is "not too expensive" - what price range did you have in mind?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 19/09/2018 18:36

this style of coat is popular right now:

Not too expensive is not hundreds but could go up to £80, maybe even £100

Have a look at the Joules Raina macs - they are properly waterproof macs and have 3 different designs (I think). I've got an old version of this and absolutely love it. Covers your bum and the hood is very usable too! They usually have a sale/discount voucher every couple of months so it reduces the price! (Usually £139ish but I got mine in the sale!)

AwdBovril · 19/09/2018 18:59

No idea what she thinks is cool (I've never been cool! Grin) but how about a look at Seasalt or Didricksons, especially their sale sections. I have a Seasalt & it's very waterproof. I think you can get Didrickson from a lot of different outdoors shops. Both brands are good for doing coats that come down well past your bum, so you don't have to put up with with a soggy pants area all day.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 19/09/2018 19:08

in that case, i would get this one here. it is comfy, and fashionable

So far getting a cautious thumbs up for the joules coast jacket and the next one so some progress. All suggestions welcome still. I don’t think they’re making her heart beat faster and she loves her fashion... I just want her to be dry!!!!

Have a look at

herschelsupplyco.co.uk/shop/womens/apparel/jackets/rainwear

The same company who do popular backpacks. They are a bit more than your budget on their site but you can pick up reduced previous seasons elsewhere

makeupmaven · 19/09/2018 20:47

Take a look at Rains - www.harveynichols.com/brand/rains/womens/all-clothing/

I'm in my 20s and have one. They're pretty popular, come in loads of colours/lengths and are really heavy duty against rain / bad weather.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 19/09/2018 21:01

Seriously, Joules is not cool for a 20 yr old. I'm 43 and I think I'M too young for Joules. I think those Herschel ones that @Member linked to look great though.

CherryMaraschino · 19/09/2018 21:57

I have a Rains one too. Also in my twenties. I love it – and pp is right about them being heavy duty.

MoltonSilver · 19/09/2018 22:15

Does she just need a raincoat our will it double as her winter coat as well? Most of the costs mentioned have no warmth.

MoltonSilver · 19/09/2018 22:15

Coats, not costs.

gemandjule · 19/09/2018 22:30

Just a bit raincoat, she has a number of jackets and a coat, just nothing waterproof. I’ll run the Rain ones by her.

Check out Uniqlo - great quality and price. A few waterproof coat options:

MarcieBluebell · 20/09/2018 00:06

There are some cheap waterproofs on misguided or on asos more hardy ones but doesn't she need a proper coat for winter. It all depends on her style. Puffas are quite in at the moment.

brogueish · 20/09/2018 08:54

Yes a Rains should do the trick. I've also got a long waterproof parka from monki that's both warm and dry - nothing on their site yet but I'd expect this year's version to appear soon.

brogueish · 20/09/2018 08:58

Ugly link sorry!

dontgobaconmyheart · 20/09/2018 09:45

What's her style like OP? - where does she shop? Who/what does she think is cool? - I think that's crucial here really.
I'd have a look on something like Urban Outfitters to get the right idea if she's a trend based person.
Unfortunately I don't think 20 year olds and Joules are a great fit, nothing against them but I'm 30 and wouldn't (other than to keep dry on a rainy dog walk or similar). It really depends on her style.

Otherwise why not say to her that you'd like to get her a fully waterproof coat as a gift, tell her the budget and ask her to choose one and let you know, after all if it's not right, she won't wear it anyway. Waterproof shoes and an umbrella too if it's that bad!

ApolloandDaphne · 20/09/2018 12:55

My stylish 26 yo, London dwelling, DD has just bought one of those Rains waterproof coats from a trendy little boutique near her home. I am a 56 yo unstylish country dwelling woman and wear a Joules raincoat. No contest really.

MarcieBluebell · 20/09/2018 14:46

Exactly. Soon it will be freezing. Raincoats are more for cold rainy summer days. I remember at uni my mum buying me a really nice coat for winter and then I had pac a macs for summer.

gemandjule · 20/09/2018 14:59

Sorry, was at work. Thanks a million for the suggestions. Her style is main stream really. She’s not alternative at all but loves shopping and tends to go for places like river island, Zara, topshop. She has bought cheap things on line before but has now decided she would prefer to buy less but better fit/quality etc.
I’ve got quite an enthusiastic thumbs up for the Rain one linked by brogueish from Asos so that seems promising 😃

Honestly where she is it’s more wet and windy in the winter than very cold. She will need a good fully waterproof jacket for the winter if she’s not to get soaked regularly. She has a puffa jacket already but it won’t be waterproof enough for a 30 minute walk on wet days. She also has a sheepskin type jacket for very cold weather if she needs it. She just doesn’t seem to have anything for wet windy weather which is what she’ll have a lot of from now until December and again from February to April.

Get a bus! If that’s not possible, my fashion conscious DDs had Burberry raincoats for significant birthdays. So get a Burberry copy. Plenty around. If she doesn’t like that, give up. They are still THE raincoat for the fashion conscious.
