No new clothing 12 months. Can I do it?

That's it really- my public pledge.
I'm frankly disgusted with myself that after doing my annual sort out I have discovered clothing I didn't even know I had.
So- one year, no new items. I'll allow myself underwear as required only.
Eeek.

Go for it.

As you say , underwear and tights are exempt unless you already have a years worth of knickers/bras 'n' hosiery Grin

I do month-to-month. Did No Spend August and eased myself into September with a Jumper .

Also really enlightening is a Spendy Diary . I write down everything clothes, shoes, make-up and toiletry , except toothpaste (that;s a Health not Beauty)

Gah81 · 16/09/2018 18:33

I feel like I should be joining you on this. I have a huge amount of beautiful clothes (to be fair, I do wear all of them) but do not need any more. I am covered for every occasion from job interview to black tie awards ceremony to painting the walls.

I like the idea of month to month. Perhaps my Stoptober could be no new clothes? (Probably extending it a bit far!)

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 16/09/2018 23:16

I’m doing the same (aside from a dress for Xmas day I have my eye on... 😬)

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 17/09/2018 13:55

I did it for a year and actually it turned out easier than I thought. I also had tonnes of clothes and at some point got sick of all the excess. I have unsubscribed from most catalogues (I mainly shop online), would occasionally browse in the shops out of interest but because I was there with no intention to buy it was easy to walk away. Do it.

I do feel I benefited from it, I’m three months in since I stopped and I genuinely feel I’m making more considered choices, buying less and more mindfully for want of a better word.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 17/09/2018 14:00

I thought this would be a "I'm skint no clothes buying for last/next 12 months thread!!!

We're really hard up and my chances of any new clothes anytime soon are nil! I only wish I had a wardrobe of beautiful stuff - I mended a pair of cheap jeggings last night because I haven't got a spare £15 for another pair! And my underwear drawer is a disgrace but thankfully nobody gets to see it!

NewName54321 · 17/09/2018 14:39

I did this - just - a few years back. It was easier to buy no clothes than cut down, as once I start buying, I tended to keep buying. So I'd say buy enough underwear to last you the year, then stop buying.

Afterwards, I started buying fewer, but better quality, clothes and considering what I would wear them with and when I'd wear then, —like a grown-up person would.—

Orangedaisy · 17/09/2018 14:42

Very easy. I’ve done it without even thinking about it. On mat leave so lower standards but think I’ll be able to keep it up pretty easily.

Allthepinkunicorns · 17/09/2018 20:54

You can do it! I've just done 4 months off no fast fashion so that meant I could only buy second hand clothing. I really don't miss going in clothes shops now and will be continuing with this ethos. I'm only going to buy underware new from now on. Good luck with your no shopping!

lyinginthesundrinkingbubbles · 17/09/2018 21:17

Well 1 day down and haven't fallen off the wagon yet.
I jest- but I am going to do this.
I had a cathartic afternoon polishing shoes so they look like new.
Will give some updates through the year.

Ohhh I'm interested in this. Today I sorted through my wardrobe so many items that don't fit that haven't even been worn. I've got my wardrobe in a good state and I don't want to buy cheap crap off the hook to put in it. I've told myself I'm not buying any new clothes unless I lose about 2 stone and non of mine fit.

DuchessMinnie · 18/09/2018 08:48

I'd like to do this too. I buy far too much and then my wardrobe gets overstuffed and I end up wearing the same things anyway. I have more than enough of everything so I would like to do 12 months of buying nothing clothing related. I went to the M&S sale on Saturday (dress for £7.50!) so I am counting 16th sept as day one.

Grace32 · 18/09/2018 09:31

Good for you!! I've found myself to be a bit of a victim of fast fashion, so in recent years I've started to only allow myself two or three 'investment' pieces per year. And added basic wardrobe staples only when I absolutely need them. Best thing I've done!

Jackietheduck · 18/09/2018 10:01

I need to do this. I have a few incentives.

I have a bag of clothes for the charity shop that I have never even removed the tags from.
I have lots of unworn clothes and nowhere to wear them.
I am continuously buying but when I am going somewhere, I don’t feel nice in any of them.
I shop in an uncontrolled way and am not mindful of what I already own.
There is no cohesion between my clothes, it is all random items that I ‘must buy’ at that particular time so regardless of how much I spend, I never look put together.
I’m currently losing weight and I don’t want to buy anything in my current size.
I shop mainly online and spend a lot of time returning parcels.

penguinseatfish · 18/09/2018 10:58

Watching as I need to do this!

Sarcelle · 18/09/2018 12:10

It could be fun. Wearing clothes in different combos to mix it up a bit. If you own a lot of accessories it would make it easier.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 18/09/2018 12:52

Have you actually got everything you need or just loads of stuff that you are never going to wear?

Personally I would make sure I had a core capsule before venturing down this path -of stuff I really love.

Then I would concentrate on making really well informed choices based on what was missing/needed replacing with the best quality stuff I could afford.

At that point I could attempt a year with no shopping, but to be honest I would find it dull and would probably succumb to a cashmere bargain or pair of boots occasionally.

theredjellybean · 18/09/2018 12:57

Can I join in?
I have every eventuality covered, so many beautiful shoes and a lifetimes supply of luxury lingerie...
Only need to replace stockings (don't wear tights) but even those I have lots to wear out yet.

lyinginthesundrinkingbubbles · 18/09/2018 15:22

Great I have company!
I think it will be a revelation to discover what I really miss after a year. Please keep posting.

In response to PP, I for one have got everything I could possibly need. Have decided to go through and assign for charity/ebay/etsy-ing purposes a number of things which feels good.

I genuinely cannot think of anything (bar tights, which I am forever laddering) that I could need for any situation you could throw at me. Hiking? Got it covered. Black tie do? Sorted. White tie do? Oh yes. Painting the flat. Yup! And so on...

DuchessMinnie · 19/09/2018 08:50

Yes, I have everything I need for any occasion so I think I'm ready to do this. I sorted my wardrobe at the weekend and am wearing a "new" dress for work which I'd forgotten I had. I normally rotate 3 pairs of black trousers for work purposes so this makes a nice change.

Deathraystare · 19/09/2018 09:32

I am disgusted and frankly shocked by how much crap (clothes) I have. I have given some to charity but most is really shoddy stuff so just chucked. I am not working very often and am horrified how many black trousers I have. I must seriously try them all on , see which look best and keep only a few. I have just shoved them back in the wardrobe for now but was getting fed up looking at them all!

Thankfully I think I have a few outfits to try on for a November wedding so should not have to buy anything new.

How are we all doing? I couldn't resist using my invitation to the next VIP slot but when I looked there was nothing I needed so didn't spend anything. Very pleased as normally I can blow £200-300 on that easily.

PeridotCricket · 25/09/2018 08:41

I did this last year. DH was made redundant and took a ‘year out’. The only things I bought were two work tops and a quilted jacket in the sale. Both needed. I mended things and polished shoes. I saved a fortune and it has made me more thoughtful about what I buy now. Top tips, unsubscribe from all emails selling you stuff, hide style & beauty, don’t go to the shops at lunchtime or the weekend. Find something else to do!

bargainsgalore18 · 25/09/2018 13:28

I’m only going to allow myself to buy from charity shops or eBay. But with eBay I’m only allowed to spend what’s in my Paypal account from selling stuff.
