Bumpy arm skin

Haahhpy · 14/09/2018 02:38

Any ideas what causes bumpy arm skin? Particularly upper arms. Hard to explain but I'm sure a lot of people have had it and know what I mean. I've heard many different theories (diet, not enough sunlight etc) but would be interested to hear if anyone has had it before and found a way to cure it!

Keratosis Pilaris?

RhubarbCrumble1 · 14/09/2018 03:14

My mum was told eating avocados in her diet would help and it may be coincidence but after years of having the bumps you describe they went. Worth a try

Sturmundcalm · 14/09/2018 09:34

i've heard that heel softener creams deal with it but i've been doing dry brushing this year and that's completely got rid of it for me.

Weathergirl1 · 14/09/2018 09:48

I tried urea cream (as recommended on here) which may have helped marginally, but the thing that made the most difference was taking omega-3 fish oils. I wasn't even trying to cure the arm bumps as it was for a completely different reason I was taking them, but the difference was really noticeable within about a month.

Rich body lotion, no super hot water, a gentle peeling once a week.

I've been doing that for quite some time and they've pretty much vanished.

Mine is 100 times better when I’ve been in the sunshine, so whether it’s vitamin D or just a tan that’s helping, I’m not sure! DS2 has them badly and also has low vit D so I’m inclined to think it’s that. It’s awful isn’t it, I used to be made fun of at school for having rough skin, called Goose (pimples) and Chicken Legs (it’s on my thighs too). Really knocked my confidence. Urea creams and those body butters you can buy in pharmacies on the £1 shelf are great, but sun has definitely made the biggest difference to me.

Italian Korean flannels in a hot bath (or afterwards rather, after the pores have been opened a bit) , plus a cream like Ameliorate (made especially for KP) or, iirc, there is an Avene one as well. Dd says the Ameliorate worked better.

bonzo77 · 14/09/2018 11:46

Daily gentle exfoliation and a light daily moisturiser after. Sunlight.

MeMyselfand · 14/09/2018 11:50

I have it on my arms and give it a gentle exfoliation scrub the hell out of it that works for me

duvetdaysgone · 14/09/2018 12:24

Diet is defiantly got something to do with it. I had it on my arms and thighs for as long as I can remember. Iv lost 3 stone since last November and the bumps have gone. I loved my summer wardrobe & showing off my arms & thighs all bump free.

Haahhpy · 14/09/2018 17:31

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely try the dry brushing, I already exfoliate but I haven't seen an improvement from that tbh. I do find when I use a really good (read expensive) body moisturiser they are a bit better. I haven't tried urea or heel balms though so might give that a whirl. I also find that they are better after having sunlight on them like after a holiday....
Unfortunately I really hate avocado and I'm a vegetarian so I can't have fish oils! So sadly can't try those ideas!

Being a healthy weight helped mine. Plus lots of moisturiser.

Haahhpy · 14/09/2018 18:02

Yes I've gained weight (have four week old baby) and I do feel that it's worse these days. Hopefully I can lose some baby weight and that will help.

Wash with soap rather than shower gel. Lots of people on this board have found this helps.

littledinaco · 14/09/2018 18:38

Have a look at the soap threads on here. I’ve been trying brushing/moisturising/different creams etc for years. Ditching all shower gel and just swapping to soap and it’s completely gone.

wiccamum · 14/09/2018 18:41

I second keratosis Polaris. I have very fine body hair and was plagued by it for years! Evening primrose/fish oil supplement, gentle exfoliating (and I mean gentle!) and regular light body brushing and moisturiser regularly. I too have found a bit of sunshine also helped

WitsEnding · 14/09/2018 18:44

Soap instead of shower gel worked for me.

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/09/2018 18:46

Mine went when I gave up eating foods containing gluten.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/09/2018 18:54

I used to have it on my arms, only realised/noticed reading this that it’s gone. I’ve followed a low carb sugar free diet and been running loads since January- maybe they are linked? Mine used to be terrible scaly, bumpy and red looking (like permanent goose bumps?)

pumpkinyael · 14/09/2018 19:15

@thenewaveragebear1983

I'm not LC (at all, cause pasta, potatoes, legumes...) but I have drastically decreased the amount of sugar and processed foods during the last few years.

Might be a reason why mine are pretty much gone/have stayed gone. (I assumed it was the gentle peels and copious amounts of lotion...)

Sunlight doesn't seem to have an impact on my case. (It isn't worse in summer)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/09/2018 19:20

Could be pumpkin, although as a result of going low carb I find I eat much less processed food, so far fewer chemicals and additives etc. So perhaps not entirely as a result of low carb, but as a result of generally eating more real food? Interesting....!

Haahhpy · 14/09/2018 19:36

I think I have a good diet... I am vegetarian and eat mostly plant based diet. I do eat gluten though and my mum is intolerant... Could be a link there. Also do have a sweet tooth so do eat sugar.

Gluten free diet cures this

delphguelph · 14/09/2018 21:33

Low carb bizarrely helps with it.

LoafEater · 14/09/2018 21:37

It’s the gluten. I am 100% certain on this. Flexitol and drinking lots of water gets rid when mine flairs up.
