I know what mum boots are and mum jeans, but can anyone please explain what a mum bob haircut is please?

Thanks!

What a load of old tripe.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/09/2018 12:18

I don't think it's a graduated bob. I thought it was a fluffy mid-length bob that really needs straightening to look "done", with a similarly fluffy fringe. A bit like Alexa Chung without the bone structure and quirky peter-pan collar dressing to make it look intentional.

I’m being coloured right now and have the hair below which I suspect is mum hair

But hoping for a shorter choppy cut if my hair will do it! Like this or a pixie

Well this came up when I googled 'mum bob' and is what I had imagined anyway.

I've had bobs before and they really don't suit me. My hair is too thin and wispy.

Meant to say even when I'm old I will keep my long hair.

pumpkinyael · 14/09/2018 13:15

I also decided to Google search it. And decided to screenshot the very first picture.

  1. Mum bob
  2. Speak to your manager haircut
  3. Mummy haircut

I've also tried herbal essences (pretty good, but my hair was weird this summer and it usually wouldn't be rich enough).

My sister uses matrix shampoo and conditioner (mega sleek).

Her hair is beautiful. (But she has "real curls", unlike me...)

Wrong thread

delphguelph · 14/09/2018 13:24

I've also heard it called a "speak to the manager" haircut...

Never heard of Mum bob either, but first person that comes to mind is the mother from Outnumbered

If you look like Katie Holmes you're gonna look good with any haircut. Obv us mere mortals look like Richard 3rd.

That slide above is taken from a thread offa here from a while back that was frigging hilarious. Expectation vs reality with clothes/hair/ make up.

DollyDayScream · 14/09/2018 13:30

I've read on this site about frumpy ageing pixie cuts, mum bobs, mum ponytails and that long hair only looks good when thick and full.

What the actual are we supposed to do with our hair then? Maybe get it shaved off 24 hours after giving birth and wear a beanie hat instead?

pumpkinyael · 14/09/2018 13:33

delphguelph

True. But that was the first picture for mummy haircut...
I myself would probably end up with hair looking like a particularly frazzled pompom ;) (unless I straightened and serum-ed it every morning)

(Mummy hair however lead to the wispy hair remains of actual mummies. Not a haircut anyone would want to emulate, I imagine...Wink)

Elledorado · 14/09/2018 13:36

I also hate the bullshit "mum" prefixes which basically mean "dowdy".

Obvious from this thread, everyone has a different version of a bob that they find dowdy. Just call it a dowdy bob and be done with it.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 14/09/2018 13:45

THIS is a shit bob....

That is most def a Shit Bob Paul

Harleypuppy · 14/09/2018 14:05

I used to have the graduated bob in the late 90s and early noughties. I think that's why it has the piss taken out of it as is close enough in time for it to be ridiculed.
I now have really long hair, down to just above my arse. Classy. But it fits into the stereotype of 'fat woman =long hair ' as I'm five stone overweight!

Musicforsnorks · 14/09/2018 14:44

I’m not a mum but never did understand why the word picked up shitty connotations regarding fashion and styling in general.

I have difficult hair, most mums look better than me ;)

I think it ‘might’ have its roots in a time when ‘mothers’ were supposed to (and expected to) denounce fashion and beauty once children came along. Just plain old misogyny I guess. Your value lies in having children then giving up on life. Yeh, bollocks.

I always associated the stepped-up-at-the-back bob with office types. Dunno why.

EdinaMonsoon · 14/09/2018 15:40

I'm cringing a bit now & worried I have unintentionally caused offence in my use of the term "mum bob". A few days ago I had my long hair cut into an intentionally messy, tousled bob and specifically said "I want to be very clear that I do not want a mum bob". Until this thread, I never really thought it was a derogatory term; more just short hand for saying that I wanted something which suited my natural inclination towards relaxed hair care regime which makes good use of my natural wave rather than super neat & tidy. Also, because anything that's too groomed or put together (hair and clothing) does make me feel a bit frumpy. I need to stop using that term now, don't I?! Ditto "Mum Boots".

I think it depends entirely on what suits your personal style to a large extent but the over-riding impression should be that it is effortless and works with your hair's natural characteristics.

Anything too "done" instantly becomes dowdy, naff or "Speak With The Manager" cut.

scarbados · 14/09/2018 17:08

Bobs are 'mum' and dowdy. Ponytails are 'shit'. Short hair de-sexes women (apparently). Women over 30 or 40, depending on which bigoted and opinionated but of SM you read, should never ever have long hair.

Pray tell me , O Shallow and Judgemental Ones, how should I have my hair to meet your approval?

Sarcelle · 14/09/2018 17:12

I have seen men’s jeans referred to as Dad jeans - Blue Harbour range and any that George Clooney wears. It is just a shorthand, although I do think the preface “mum” is a bit sneery.

Handbaghag · 14/09/2018 17:31

At first by the 'can I speak to the manager' comment, I thought people meant 'I'm displeased with my haircut can I speak to the manager to complain!'
