Please help me find a coat for pram-pushing rainy dahs

Currently on maternity leave and spend a good chunk of my day pushing a pram around and none of my existing coats are going to cut the mustard for keeping me dry when I don’t have a hand free for holding an umbrella!

The holy grail would be:

  • at least knee length. I keep finding coats that are otherwise nice but are mid thigh length and mean my legs are going to get soaked in a downpour
  • have a decent sized hood that will properly keep my head dry and the front of which won’t hover annoyingly round my hairline
  • be waterproof enough that I can walk around in the rain for an hour or so without my clothes getting wet. Showerproof ain’t going to cut it
  • ideally I don’t want to look like I’m spending the day hiking. I’m not looking for something really sophisticated but ideally vaguely nice looking
  • under £150 ideally

I would be most grateful for any suggestions of coats or even just brands that make the sort of coat that I’m after.

Have a look at Target dry. I like the Outback which is full length but they do various styles and colours.

southeastlondonmum · 10/09/2018 08:57

Sea salt are really waterproof and warm. Highly recommend - we are past the pram pushing but it's my go to park coat

MoltonSilver · 10/09/2018 08:57

Try Isle Jacobsen.

I have a navy joules one which is fleece lined, similar here www.joules.com/Women/Jackets-Coats/Raine-Print/Waterproof-Parka

LetThemEatCheese · 12/09/2018 09:00

Ooh thanks for all the lovely recommendations. I think the Target outback is a pretty good contender and I also like a Seasalt coat, the Janelle. I’m just wavering on the price of the Janelle. Does anyone know if Seasalt tend to ever have their coats on sale?

Uniqlo do a great raincoat, over the knee, thin so you can layer underneath and not sweaty

MerryDeath · 13/09/2018 18:59

I bought the janelle on mat leave last year for rainy pram pushing... brilliant coat! Have not seen it on sale.

Clarabumps · 13/09/2018 19:07

I bought a target dry coat last year, it was send straight back, it might have been dry but it was draughty and I was cold in it.
I haven't seen a Janelle on sale but sea salt do normally put selected winter styles on sale in March time.
I'd invest in the Janelle.

LetThemEatCheese · 20/09/2018 12:12

@Camsie30 do you mind posting a link for the uniqlo coat you have? Could see a few on their website that seemed to fit your description and not sure which is the right one Smile

Interesting about the Target coat @Clarabumps I was thinking I don’t need it to be super warm as I can wear layers but I may come to regret that in the middle of winter I guess!

I bought a seasalt coat in their Easter sale 2 years ago. Worn it most cold and or wet days since

LightastheBreeze · 20/09/2018 12:33

I have bought 3 Seasalt coats from the Next Clearance, so worth a look on there, one of mine was £40 off there.

Clarabumps · 20/09/2018 14:06

Also the target dry coat I tried was very tight in the underarms and in the arm circumference. I don’t have big arms and it was uncomfortable. I’d order some and try them on and send the ones you don’t like back.
Big purchase. I’m in the West coast of Scotland so it’s freezing with a howling gale for roughly 5 months out the year so we need layers. X

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/09/2018 14:20

Another vote for the joules longer length rain coat. Homestly the hood stays in place, you stay protected and I have never got wet in it.

keely79 · 20/09/2018 14:24

Would second the Ilse Jacobsen - love mine and hood is properly big. Also plenty of room for jumpers under. Has worn really well as well. On third year now.

bananamonkey · 20/09/2018 15:36

I got the Janelle last year for rainy nursery runs and it's perfect. JL sometimes have 10% off but otherwise they don't seem to go into the sale much. I managed to get £10 off buying it from somewhere random online.

bananamonkey · 20/09/2018 15:39

Black one is £135 here, there are some deals online if you don;t want a specific colour www.annadavies.co.uk/seasalt-janelle-ii-knee-length-waterproof-coat-black/p9299

BubblesBuddy · 20/09/2018 15:43

The Janelle might go on sale but it’s rare. It will be an iffy colour if it does. I have one that’s 3 years old and it looks like new. It is knee length, warm, well made and keeps out the rain and has a hood - job done!

squish7 · 20/09/2018 15:55

regatta roanstar is fabulous

LightastheBreeze · 20/09/2018 16:32

I bought a navy Janelle one inJanuary from Next for £75 and wore it in Iceland on holiday, kept me lovely and warm and dry. I'm tall and it is quite long on me. Probably wrong time of year for bargains now though.

LetThemEatCheese · 24/09/2018 16:58

So I think I’m sold on the Janelle! Thanks for the link @bananamonkey but I think I want it in blue. I don’t really suit black; it tends to wash me out and I looked washed out at the best of times anyway these days!

For those of you that have the Janelle could I do a one hour walk in the rain without water seeping through? I need something that I can do a fairly long walk in without getting wet. Sorry, I know people have said it does the job but I just want to be reeeeeally sure before I part with the cash Smile

@LightastheBreeze excellent sales shopping, lucky you!!

M&S have a long hooded trench coat with a good that fits every element on your bill, apart from maybe the waterproof. It says “storm proof” whatever that means. It comes in beige or black - I can’t libk but search for trench on their website and there is one style with a hood

sycamore54321 · 24/09/2018 20:29

Or a baseball cap that lives permanently in the buggy basket is my answer to the annoying hood-slippage issue, if you find an otherwise perfect coat.

FreeButtonBee · 24/09/2018 20:30

Didrikson coats are great. I got one in TK Maxx for £40 and walked for 1.5 hours in the rain on Saturday. Didn’t sweat; didn’t get wet. I have a sea salt one as it’s a bit flimsy for heavy rain.
