Diptyque advent calendar - worth it @ £320?

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 14:26

Adore all things Diptyque; candles, personal and home fragrance and often treat myself to a few items throughout the year. Really fancied the Diptyque advent calendar but at £320 this is pretty pricey. When I totted up the approximate total value of the haul it didn’t reach the £320 mark which means paying a significant portion for the box! Now, I know it’s pretty but not sure it’s worth the price tag.

Other calendars such as Liberty and Harrods (which I’ve had and loved previously) are £195 and £250 but with an approx overall value in excess of £600 if the products were purchased separately whereas I think it’s cheaper to buy the Diptyque products separately.

Anyone had the Diptyque advent and loved it and think it’s worth it?

Thanks!

I havent had it but its a bit expensive in my opinion and i spend a lot on candles throughout the year.

Have you tried molton brown candles? The 3 wick ones are huge, smell amazing and at full price are about 60 but at outlet about 42.

SPOFS · 09/09/2018 14:39

I'd buy the £20 YAnkee Candle one...

IceRebel · 09/09/2018 14:42

£320 Eeeek that's a lot of money for some candles.

Mind you I was grumbling about a £4.99 Reeces Pieces advent caldendar in B and M the other day, so I might not be the target audience. Grin

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 14:44

Guys I hear you, I think perhaps spending £320 may be a bit a ridiculous...especially as there is no saving as is with the Harrods and Liberty calendars.

I’ll take a look at the Molton Brown candles, believe they may even have an advent calendar too!

You could buy a cheaper advent calendar, and with your leftover money go and buy some Diptyque products (not the advent calendar).

Nanasueathome · 09/09/2018 14:50

I’ve just looked
Molton Brown have an advent calendar but it’s £175
It does include 5 mini candles

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 17:09

If you subscribe to Molten Brown they have an offer every November when there is a 25% off everything including candles - it's worth getting the biggest sizes and picking your own favourite fragrances.

With Dipytique, it's always best to order online from them direct - I have loads of their candles but have noticed that ones bought from Space NK have nowhere near the potency and throw of scent from the ones bought directly - might just be that the NK near me has old stock - I don't know.

DH bought me a large Baies from Diptyque which is nice but not as good as White Company Cassis. £60 gets you a huge three wick candle from WC and it is really good.

You'll definitely get more bang for your buck if you avoid the advent scenario, ridiculously tempting as they are.

Am candle ho - they are the ultimate treat IMO.

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 17:16

Both the Diptyque Cinnamon and Pomander candles are very strong and really signify Christmas to me - no other candles comes close. I will have to get an order in.

strawberryalarmclock · 09/09/2018 17:20

Do adults need advent calendars?
Treat yourself to a nice candle and then buy £200 worth of chocolate advent calendars and donate to your local food bank.

LilaGrace · 09/09/2018 17:40

Interested in his thread as I'm keen on the Diptyque calendar too. What do the products add up to, if you were to buy them separately? I think it's a really nice way to sample different fragrances from the brand overall, as I'm not v familiar with Diptyque- but would like to be.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 17:50

Thanks for the feedback guys, have signed up to Molton Brown, also looking at White Company, far less expensive!

@strawberry - of course adults don’t need advent calendars, in fact does anyone, children included?

@lila - when I did the calculations it came to around £270 but that was finger in the air approximations. Really put me off because it sees you’re paying a fair bit extra for the box!

People actually spend that amount of money on a bloody calendar!? 😦

strawberryalarmclock · 09/09/2018 18:20

Definitely not but I'd happily donate advent calendars to children living in poverty, I'm sure it would be much appreciated

DreamingofSunshine · 09/09/2018 18:24

How do people know that the OP doesn't already give a significant amount to charity/food banks?

OP, I feel the same that I'd love the Diptyque one but I can't justify the money, especially as I'm only interested in the candles and not the other products. I could spend £320 on candles of my own choice.

There's an offer in Liberty of a free gift when you spend £100 at Diptyque.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 18:25

@strawberry - that is very admirable of you indeed. I’m sure those children will appreciate your gesture very much.

@penis - they sold out last year and news reports said people were willing to pay £1k re-sale. Ludicrous

OP posts:
DameDoom · 09/09/2018 18:27

strawberryalarmclock who is to say that Didsomeonesaybunny doesn't give generously to charity? It's her money to spend on whatever she wants to. OP is keeping chandlers in a job as are the rest of us candle obsessives.

This is a thread in S&B - not putting the world to rights.

Chips truly pissed on Grin

I am getting the Jo Malone one. It's £300 and I really do need it in my life.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 18:30

@dreaming - I did think that myself. I volunteer at my local Citizens advice bureau every month giving legal advice. But I need not justify myself to a total stranger that adds nothing to this thread.

I think you’re probably right about just purchasing what I want rAther than the selection they give you because some of my faves are not even included.

Will take a look at the Liberty offering, thank you!

@damedoom I love a good style and beauty thread, so I'm very aware which topic I'm in but thanks for the heads up Hmm
Pardon me for being slightly offended by such an obscene amount of money being spent on a ridiculous advent calendar for an adult.
I'll leave you to it.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 18:32

Ed - don’t get me started on the Jo Malone offering. I also love her candles! Too much choice. Although I think I’ve whittled it down to Harrods and Liberty.

OP posts:
Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 18:33

@strawberry - you are pardoned!

Racecardriver · 09/09/2018 18:34

Just take the 320 and buy yourself something nice. Grown ups really don't need advent calendars at all. I love Christmas a lot and get quite excited but the idea of adults using advent calendars makes me cringe.

strawberryalarmclock · 09/09/2018 18:36

And talking about overpriced smelly candles in style and beauty is just wrong. Head over to housekeeping maybe ladies?

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 18:37

I named my cat Opoponax - it's not my favourite Diptyque candle fragrance ever but I love the name. We call him Popo in a French accent.

Have you looked at True Grace candles Didsomeonesaybunny? They have a lovely burn and the bowl candles come in great glass.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 09/09/2018 18:41

Oh @strawberry stop being so bloody goofy, there’s as much candle posts in style and beauty as there are housekeeping.

@race - I adore the advent calendars, cringey or not I don’t care.

@dame - I’ll take a peek at this now, thanks for the suggestion
