late 30s - where do you clothes shop?

I'm needing some new clothes, especially as I'm losing weight. It wont be long before I can shop in the regular shops again rather than plus size, but it's been so long since I've been a regular size shopper that I don't know what the best shops are anymore.

I don't want to look older or younger than I am, or like I'm wearing a tent. I want to look my age. I like to look smart and for clothes to look expensive. I want to be one of these women who others look at for looking smart, clean, well put together.

What shops would you recommend? I quite like boden but not their prices but I'm not keen on shopping in places like primark either. It needs to be good quality. Ideally online for convienience.

Joy, Warehouse, Zara, Shein and Boohoo.

Nightmanagerfan · 03/09/2018 18:56

Zara, Hobbs, Kin at John Lewis, Toast, H&M for cheap summer bits. Sea Salt for jackets/jumpers. Comptoir des Cotoniers in the sale for signature pieces

cheeseandcrackers · 03/09/2018 19:18

White Stuff for dresses & skirts, Next for work basics, Phase Eight for occasions

evilharpy · 03/09/2018 19:19

Hobbs, Phase Eight, East, Sainsburys, Tesco, Zara, Warehouse, Joules, Boden

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 03/09/2018 19:22

Esprit, Gap, occasional thing from H&M, Next for jeans.

Fairylea · 03/09/2018 19:27

Basics from Next and Sainsbury’s (who actually use the same supplier), pretty tops and high fashion stuff from H and M, well fitting jeans from Marks and Spencer’s (!) and jackets and shirts from Zara. That’s my general way anyway! I also do a lot of browsing on ASOS to see what’s “in” but then I try to adapt this for my age 38, size 14-16 self. Grin

evilharpy · 03/09/2018 19:28

Meant to say, I buy most of my jeans from Tesco, they seem to fit me best.

emma6776 · 03/09/2018 19:29

Zara, Mint Velvet, All Saints and Whistles. Also get cheap skinny jeans from M&S as I can just replace as soon as they get faded. Occasionally Hush but quality has gone downhill. Hobbs for workwear.

HildaZelda · 03/09/2018 20:08

River Island for jeans (Amelie or Molly) They wash well and keep their shape.

H&M for casual tops and the occasional dress.

Primark for 'naice' tops - either dressy enough for work or to wear with skinny jeans and heels. Chiffon style things usually.

Zara- for a bit of everything, but sizes can be very hit and miss. Got a nice winter coat there last year.

Bershka - skirts and tops.

Oasis - 'occasion' dresses.

Oh I'm 38 almost 39 by the way.

maxiflump1 · 04/09/2018 07:21

Boden, white stuff, joules, mantaray at Debenhams, Warehouse. Shein and Sainsbury's.

Boden have 20% off everything until Thursday this week Wink

GraceMarks · 04/09/2018 10:33

I'm 39 and I get loads of stuff at H&M, Mango and Zara. I used to be keen on White Stuff but less so these days - I think some of their patterns are way too busy and I like things to be more classic. Oasis is good for tops and sweaters, I've also found Miss Selfridge surprisingly OK for skirts, and Next for basic workwear.

I do also have a large designer outlet near me where you can often get decent labels for significantly reduced prices. When I can afford it, I like Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker, Margaret Howell, and Osprey for accessories.

Can't stand Phase Eight though - far too "mother of the bride" for everyday wear.

Lookatmemeow · 04/09/2018 10:35

Boden, H&M, Jaeger, ASOS, Joules

keely79 · 04/09/2018 10:46

Hush, Mint Velvet, Boden (carefully), John Lewis (And/Or, Kin, Loved & Found), Gap for jumpers,. Perhaps try a John Lewis styling session to have a play with different brands/shapes? They have a good selection of brands now.

wizzywig · 04/09/2018 10:51

M&s have started an online shopper service. Ive signed up but havent been given any ideas yet. Its called something like trytuesday its free.

Blondie1984 · 05/09/2018 03:08

& Other Stories, Banana Republic, Mango and Closet

BusterGonad · 05/09/2018 03:26

I'm nearly 40 and wear a lot of Oasis for trousers, dresses and tshirts, H&M for dresses, triumph for underwear, Sainsburys for jeans, Clarks for shoes, new balance for trainers, I've just discovered Esprit for great denim dresses and cotton clothes, Por Moi for swimwear and the odd warehouse item.

Rina66 · 05/09/2018 03:29

I know that ASOS isn't aimed at our age group (goodness only knows why you' d exclude a whole demographic!)) but I do think they do some really good basics and love checking out the new in as it's always being updated - also love the catwalk links so you can properly see how a garment looks and moves from all angles.

I also try and check out little online boutiques for something a bit different at reasonable prices too. I love manamou.co.uk, their clothes are really wearable without being boring - people always comment, in a good love your top way, when I'm wearing their stuff!

Lizzy1980 · 05/09/2018 05:38

I'm 38 and recently I've noticed that most of the clothes in the shops I've used for ages are a tad too young.
I still get a few bits from Oasis and Warehouse, mainly simple tops and everyday stuff. For dresses I really like Boden and their sizing is really consistent. Joules/Sea Salt for casual stuff. Fat Face do lovely jumpers but their prints can be a bit mumsy

verite · 05/09/2018 09:28

Whistles, Reiss, Baukjen, Oliver Bonas, French Connection, Outnet. Am now early 40s, but have been shopping at these for a good while.

hollieberrie · 05/09/2018 09:38

Whistles, Jigsaw, Cos - often buy on Ebay or in sales as cant really afford their full priced stuff.
H & M for the odd bit.
Charity shops.

Ellapaella · 05/09/2018 09:53

Everywhere really. Whistles and All saints are lovely but out of my price range so may buy from time to time on eBay. Whistles can be a bit conservative though so I'm selective.
I still get stuff from Topshop but warehouse and Mango are probably my favourite high street stores. I like Hush in particular for Jumpers, jeans and skirts.
Also really love the look of Other Stories but haven't bought anything yet,

Ellapaella · 05/09/2018 09:54

Oh and I also rummage around in charity shops form them to time and have found some great stuff.

bargainsgalore18 · 05/09/2018 11:50

TK Maxx

Charity shops. There is someone the same size as me who donates Whistles, Reiss, LK Bennett, wolford, Jigsaw, Karen Millen, MaxMara etc (often brand new with tags!) to my local charity shop. I have snapped up many of her clothes! I’m very grateful to her whoever she is!

Also eBay - mainly search for preloved Whistles, Reiss etc

vitaminC · 05/09/2018 15:56

I'm slightly older (early 40s), but mainly shop in Esprit for basics, with posher bits from Gérard Darel, Comptoir des Cotonniers, IKKS etc. Occasionally Reiss, LK Bennett and sometimes the odd designer piece from The Outnet (DVF, Issa...)

I also occasionally order everyday clothes from the American brand Express. Their clothes are decent quality, good value for money and very comfortable. I'm pretty curvy (size 14 tall hourglass) and all their clothes are stretchy enough to not need tailoring to fit, unlike most European brands.

Featherstep · 06/09/2018 01:19

I'm 37. Mostly Zara, H&M - I've found some H&M stuff is better quality than Zara, if you go to the big stores and choose carefully. Some Gap and Uniqlo. Office for shoes. Occasional Warehouse, Boden, Hush, Other Stories, Jigsaw in the sale.
I like Whistles, Reiss, Sandro but can't afford them so I hunt for bargains on ebay.
