Tell me what high street shampoo to buy

I need new shampoo. I usually just get Aussie but their marketing increasingly makes me suspect they’re playing me for a mug, and since I now have longer hair than usual (thanks to thyroid treatment) I’m feeling more need to take care of it. However the sight of the shampoo shelves in Boots makes my decision making centres curl up in a small ball at the back of my skull and go “wibble”.

So can you lot tell me please? I’ll just buy whatever gets most suggestions. Needs to be available in large branches of Boots/Superdrug. Conditioner suggestions also welcome (although my approach is usually to buy the cheapest available, slather it on and leave it for a few minutes).

Relevant information: I’m 52 with straight, fine, shoulder length Caucasian hair and I wash it every day, more or less (it feels icky if I don’t).

Thanks in advance Thanks

Your hair sounds similar to mine, although mine is also colour treated so perhaps more fine and fragile.

In the summer I switched to L’oreal Dream Lengths. It leaves my hair looking so healthy - it’s the cheapest shampoo and conditioner that I’ve been impressed with. www.loreal-paris.co.uk/products/hair-care/brand/elvive-dream-lengths

I’d second L’Oreal Elvive, pretty much any of them, so be honest. Boots often have their hair stuff on 3 for 2 so worth checking that too.

Pantene Volume and Body. Has the advantage of being see-through rather than thick and gloppy!

willothewisp17 · 31/08/2018 07:55

Any/all of the OGX range, I have noticed a massive difference in my hair since using it!

Strongbeatsskinny · 31/08/2018 09:56

Another OGX vote here my hairdresser often comments on how lovely and soft my hair is.

Brambleboo · 31/08/2018 10:44

I recently read a great write up for the Charles Worthington salon at home range by the Good Housekeeping Institute. I'm looking forward to trying it.

I have started to use Hask Coconut shampoo and conditioner. It's not the cheapest of the cheap but easily picked up in Boots. It claims to be sulfate free and unlike others, doesn't leave my hair straw like. It suits my hair - which is fine but lots of it - leaving it soft and light but not flat. It also gets the thumbs up from my DDs. It is so much easier when the whole household use the same shampoo and conditioner.

Kochicoo · 31/08/2018 17:11

Agree about OGX. My hair is so much nicer after using it.

Veterinari · 31/08/2018 17:16

My hair is the same as yours OP. It’s been totally transformed by buying silicone/dimethicone free shampoo and conditioners. Much better condition and no longer lank and flat after a day
I use body shop banana or Garnier ultimate blends coconut milk (very cheap!) Both are fantastic!

EvilRingahBitch · 31/08/2018 17:26

Interesting stuff: keep them coming

I back up Hask, I started using it after Caroline Hirons recommending & I love it (47 fine hair). I use the shampoo & conditioner for coloured hair but also love the intensive conditioners in the packets, all smells divine too aswell as being sulphate & paraben free. Buy in Superdrug they often have it on offer 😀

keepingbees · 31/08/2018 17:56

Dove or VO5 are quite good cheapies. I never rated Aussie myself

Picklypickles · 31/08/2018 18:00

I like the Garnier Ultimate Blends ones, particularly the coconut and honey ones. They smell lovely and leave my frizzy hair really soft and silky!!

Earslaps · 31/08/2018 18:04

Charles Worthington Micellar shampoo and conditioner. Cleans my hair really well without stripping it too much or leaving my scalp itchy. The conditioner seems to be rich without weighing it down. Not too pricey and usually 3 for 2.

Sofabitch · 31/08/2018 18:11

John Freda the best I've ever used.

Methe · 31/08/2018 18:15

Lidl tea tree shampoo and conditioner or lush sea salt solid shampoo and conditioner. I tend to alternate between these and my fine straight hair is in amazing condition.

Both seriously cheap too.

toomuchfaster · 31/08/2018 18:16

I use the coconut Herbal Essences, but I have curly hair. Choose the one that suits yours. I found L'Oréal elvive left my hair with a coated feeling, as did the Fructis stuff.

Methe · 31/08/2018 18:17

Completely missed the bit about boots/Superdrug, sorry Blush

TeaAddict235 · 31/08/2018 18:18

I rate the L'Oréal total 5 elvive or the Pantene repair shampoos and conditioners.

Both make my hair very happy and look good. But my hair is curly and shoulder length.

HeyMacWey · 31/08/2018 18:20

Another Hask user here, although I only use the conditioner. It's great stuff though. And you hardly need any of the conditioner so a bottle will last for months.

For shampoo I use an osmo one - the blue one - you can buy on eBay.

I've got fine straight hair and this combination works well for me.

cloudtree · 31/08/2018 18:22

John Frieda either the moisture one or the smooth and sleek one. My hair is long thick and balayaged and this makes it swishy.

EssexMummy123456 · 31/08/2018 18:35

John Frieda moisture

EvilRingahBitch · 31/08/2018 19:21

There’s a range of contenders cropping up. I feel a bar chart coming on.

For the OGX fans: which ones do you use? I sometimes use their argan oil smoother to keep frizzy ends in their place so I’m quite tempted by them. Never heard of Hask at all: shall check out.

The requirement for Boots/Superdrug isn’t so much for cost (I have 60 quid on my Boots Advantage card just itching to be spent), more ongoing convenience: I don’t want a routine purchase like shampoo to turn into a one hour expedition to the PO on a Saturday morning to collect a parcel, whereas I walk past Boots and Superdrug twice a day.

Ogx is fab. I’ve used a few. But usually use the volumising one as I have quite thin hair. My sister really liked the coconut one as well.

The other one I like is Maui it’s s but more expensive but smells gorgeous and leaves my hair soft and full.

I usually buy them when they are on offer and stock up.

MadeinBelfast · 31/08/2018 19:46

I have hair like yours and have had trouble finding nice shampoo recently. In desperation I bought Schwartzkopf Gliss in Home Bargains for £1. It's the purple one for volume and it's so much better than anything I've used recently. I'm going to have to go back and stock up!
