Would you wear men’s brogues?

FabulousTomatoes · 30/08/2018 18:18

I really like these

They are in my size (6) and I like the colour... however brogues are new territory for me and I don’t want to look too masculine as I’ll be wearing them with loose pinstripe trousers! Confused

Is there a brogue cut that is different for men and for women? Having searched on Google I’m not sure...!

I wear Dr Martens brogues for work and they are quite clumpy and masculine in comparison to another pair I have specifically styled as women's (Church's). Not a problem for me as I tend towards the clumpy and masculine!

Dr martens are pretty unisex I think. You can get more “feminine” brogues but I think brogues are a pretty masculine look.

I have dr martens brogues and I love them. I wear them with dresses or cropped trousers, but only because I have teeny feet and they’d disappear a bit underneath wide legged pinstripe trousers.

Clarks do some lovely brogues for women, I've got some navy patent ones and lots of people have commented how much they like them. The style is Hamble Oak.

Floisme · 30/08/2018 19:06

I'm no longer a fan of Dr Martens but I like those brogues and would wear them. I normally buy Clarks Hamble Oaks. I like the sound of your outfit.

erinaceus · 30/08/2018 19:09

Those are beautiful. Get them to try on.

If I am wearing some more masculine parts of my outfit I usually soften with femininity somewhere else, a scarf or jewellery.

AbeautifulBeast · 30/08/2018 19:15

I would, I was actually considering this the other day! Those are lovely and once they are on no one will know if they are men's or ladies 😁

olderthanyouthink · 30/08/2018 19:20

Those are nice.

I wouldn't wear men's brogues because I have very narrow feet and women's ones are already a bit struggle. I love my Clark's Hamble Oaks though I need more of them

EraOfTheGrey · 30/08/2018 20:35

I prefer them to Hamble Oaks. I find Hamble oaks a little dainty and apologetic. If you are looking for brogues then wear brogues, not a feminine softer version of brogues.

I did try out the Hamble Oaks and ended up donating them to a local charity shop. I really didn't like the click klop of the heel.

MadMaryBoddington · 30/08/2018 20:57

I wouldn’t personally, but if I saw them on someone else I would think they were very cool.

dudsville · 30/08/2018 21:02

I love those shoes, but would they fit? My oh has the same foot length I have but I swim in his shoes.

witchmountain · 30/08/2018 21:38

Is there a brogue cut that is different for men and for women?

No. Shoes are shoes. In theory men's shoes are slightly wider but that doesn't always seem to the the case in practice. Try them on and see if they are a good fit and if they work with the rest of the outfit..

I wear "men's" brogues all the time. I don't worry about looking too masculine because I don't personally find that a useful way to classify clothes. If they make you happy when you put them on then wear them!

Dr Martens have quite a clumpy sole which might make them look a bit 'regulation workwear'.

For some reason I can imagine your trousers both with and without red braces Grin

MsRinky · 30/08/2018 21:55

I have a pair of men's Grensons which I love - their women's shoes are too narrow for me. They have fab chunky red soles, make me seem an inch taller!

FabulousTomatoes · 30/08/2018 23:56

Thank you all, will read through properly tomorrow! X

I have a beautiful pair of bright yellow Barker men's brogues which fit perfectly. I have narrowish feet and usually men's shoes are too 'deep' for me (too wide and tall in the heel), but these are maybe a size smaller than usual. I would try them on and see how they feel. The style is already quite masculine so except for fit I don't see how men's and women's styles would be very different.

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 31/08/2018 00:18

I'm loving the idea of apologetic brogues Grin I think a lot depends on your feet and legs. I've got narrow feet and ankles, Hamble oaks look right on me, anything else looks out of proportion.

TiredPony · 31/08/2018 00:19

I have 3 pairs of brogues and love them. I often get comments when I wear them. The pair I wear the least are the Hamble Oaks because they're not proper brogues, they're a soft version of and although really comfy I don't like the look of them so much. Funnily enough I got them in a charity shop, were they yours @EraOfTheGrey?

EraOfTheGrey · 31/08/2018 00:25

@TiredPony That would be funny. Were they either tan or grey in a size 5? Yep, I tried 2 pairs. Did you pick them up in a royal borough?

ForSaleChesterDraws · 31/08/2018 07:09

Funnily enough I’ve just ordered two pairs of Dr Martens brogues from ASOS that are out for delivery. It didn’t even occur for me to look at men’s/ women’s. I just searched by brand and size. I figured that DM’s last for donkeys years and that spending a little bit extra would be an investment as Clark’s shoes aren’t as sturdy.

Grace32 · 31/08/2018 08:01

Love these! That outfit sounds awesome. I always gravitate towards looks that mix masculine tailoring with something floaty and more feminine. So brogues are a staple for me.

FabulousTomatoes · 31/08/2018 08:47

Thanks for all the replies! I’ve bottled it on the Doc Martins so they are staying in my basket for now. Instead I’ve been looking up Hamble Oaks... and have just ordered a pair in dark pewter from EBay for £35 brand new!

So I must apologise in advance for my apologist brogues but I think I need to get used to the more ladylike versions first, because my style is quite feminine and those DMs are a bit of a step for me right now!

I prefer the shape of the men's shoe and they're more comfortable, don't really understand why shops feel they have to feminise the shape. I used to have a pair of men's brogues in the late 80s and they don't look masculine necessarily just depends on what you wear with them!

TiredPony · 31/08/2018 12:17

@EraOfTheGrey
Yes, tan size 5 and in BHF in RBK Shock

EraOfTheGrey · 31/08/2018 13:25

@TiredPony You have my shoes. There was also a brand new pair of grey ones. Small world.

FabulousTomatoes · 31/08/2018 15:00

Aw this is all rather cosy Grin
