In my 50s and just bought DMs have I lost the plot?

Have just bought these in burgundy for the winter to wear with jeans at weekend etc and would appreciate opinions. Are they boring and straying into frumpy territory or am I look like I am trying to hard to relive DM student in a midlife crisis sort of way?

To add context I’m 5’8” and a size 20 but sort of in proportion.

DMs

I love those! And in no way are they a bad idea.

Fwiw my mum has an enviable collection of DMs , she's nearly 70 and just never stopped wearing them. She looks great.

Enjoy your new shoesSmile

pickingdaisies · 29/08/2018 10:33

I have always wanted dm's but they just don't fit me, enjoy them!

NonaGrey · 29/08/2018 10:39

Plenty of women in their fifties wear Docs. Nothing particularly unusual about it.

If you like them, wear them.

MilesHuntsWig · 29/08/2018 10:39

You will look amazing! Own it!

I'm approx the same size as you and treated myself to vegan silver snakeskin DM sandals for the summer and adore them!

Have fun!

KalindaBlack · 29/08/2018 10:42

Absolutely not unreasonable, I love docs and wear mine a lot. Enjoy them, they're so comfy Smile

doodleygirl · 29/08/2018 10:42

They are fab, enjoy wearing them.

There have been a number of threads on S & B lately which start with am I too old to wear ..............

I am 54 and really dont understand this at all, wear what you love because it makes you feel confident and happy.

MeMyElfandI · 29/08/2018 10:46

Just realised my original post is missing words but hopefully you get the gist of it. Typed it while trying to get DD out of bed to go uniform shopping.

Thanks Magic and Daisies, i’ve lost my style mojo a bit and need a bit of straight talking, as friends seem to like everything I suggest or buy and I’m not sure if they just being kind.

Also as days comfort seems to be a bit of a deciding factor in what I buy but scared I will look like I have given up and raided the orthopaedic shoe catalogues.

DMs are so comfortable and for all ages. I’ve been wearing them (in various styles) since I was 13 and am late 30s now :)

TheVanguardSix · 29/08/2018 10:48

Not at all! My MIL, coming up on 78 now, bought DMs at 50 and started her degree at Saint Martins... Martens/Martins Wink (finished her degree too- this wasn’t some reactionary midlife crisis horse kick- and if it was, good on her).

Those DMs will take you places! Wear them with pride! If you can remember Alexei Sayle’s Doctor Martens Boots diddy, then you are their rightful owner. Smile

TheVanguardSix · 29/08/2018 10:50

Burgundy DMs are the bomb. Old skool! 🤙

MeMyElfandI · 29/08/2018 11:05

Thank you everyone. Trying to be more authentic now, growing out my grey hair, deciding to be kinder to myself after 3 years of severe depression, just need to get my confidence back and sense of self if that makes sense.

Maybe i’m hankering after that ‘don’t give a F**k what anyone thinks’ attitude I had in my student days with the DM purchase.

I agree with the sentiment that we should wear what we want but at present just struggling to put into practice.

I love DMs never seen them look bad on anyone. I have three pots and currently listing after a pair of the New Order album cover special edition ones

Immigrantsong · 29/08/2018 11:21

You are never too old for DMs. Rock them!

Mabelface · 29/08/2018 11:21

I'll need never stop wearing them. They look good, are comfortable and last for years. There's no age limit.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 29/08/2018 13:30

Just don't wear them for a long period of time when you first wear them. Wear them round the house first. I always put them away with socks stuffed in them. A bit of baby oil on the seams is a good idea as well. However once they are broken in they will last for ever and you can wear for hours at a time. Beware they are addictive and you be wanting a pair in every colour 😃

TodoDoingDone · 29/08/2018 13:43

They are lovely! I stopped wearing them after on pair shredded my feet so badly. But these op have made me want another pair, in fact this same pair as you, to try again..now that I'm nearly 50, I'll be sensible about breaking them in carefully Wink

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 29/08/2018 13:48

Oh God! I want some now (56 yr old) 😊

PolkerrisBeach · 29/08/2018 13:57

I have very similar in brown and they're so comfortable.

MeMyElfandI · 29/08/2018 19:59

No going back now, I have them on to break them in round the house. Now aside from my slim fit [bit of a contradiction given my size 20 bod) what do I wear them with?

14 yr DD very jealous of them.

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2018 20:03

Those ones are great and just because you are over 50 doesn't mean you shouldn't wear them. They scuff into a really nice two tone.

Verbena87 · 29/08/2018 20:07

Gorgeous, and nice versatile style as well.

My DM’s have done 5 winters and are still good, so they’re definitely a good buy.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 29/08/2018 20:12

I’m 47 and bought a similar pair this year. Love my DMs. They’re comfy when broken in and last and last.

toolazytothinkofausername · 29/08/2018 20:15

Complete shoe envy! Gorgeous!

Sabulous · 29/08/2018 21:20

I love my DMs. Get yourself some "Doc Socks" from the DMs website. They are a godsend when breaking them in as they are padded in all the right places.

Needahairbrush · 29/08/2018 21:43

They look fab, just my style (I’m early 40’s) I’d wear with cigarette pants, tapered trousers or a floral skater style dress & coloured tights.
