Hair permanently lank and greasy - advice?

I have such oily thin hair and it’s always so greasy looking, even just a few hours after I’ve washed it Sad It looks so messy, flops out of any style and just hangs all limp and horrible. It’s been like it my whole life.

Has anyone got any tips or products I can try? I tried the Aussie volume shampoo after a suggestion on here but it seemed to make it worse! Has anyone had any success? Is air drying better or blow drying? Thanks in advance!

Have you tried dry shampoo?

Needahairbrush · 27/08/2018 19:46

Elvive blue ‘clay’ shampoo has made a difference to me, I can go 2-3 days now.

Fstar · 27/08/2018 20:15

I have fine hair and always used to have to wash hair every day. Since ive been using Philip Kingsley i can get away with every other day and using dry shampoo, although by the end of the dry shampo day im dying to wash it

FreeButtonBee · 27/08/2018 20:20

Swell shampoo is expensive but good

Philip Kingsley itchy flakey scalp sorts my scalp out and I have been loyal for about 8 years.

Redkem clean maniac (I think tats the name) is also great and I use as a second shampoo after the PK. Minimal conditioner. Olaplex no 3 is v gd as a hair mask which doesn’t affect the scalp so doesn’t produce more oil but it improves condition nicely.

Kerastase Bain Divalent (£12 on Amazon) or Aveda Scalp Benefits (£18) have been great for me. I'm growing out bleach and have greasy roots; I can go four days now, with a squirt of dry shampoo.

Maxsaidno · 27/08/2018 20:29

I had the same problem and had a perm out of desperation to dry it out/give it some volume. Definitely not the answer for everyone but it’s worked wonders for me. Oh and dry shampoo to break the daily washing habit.

SuperPug · 27/08/2018 20:58

I rotate Aveda shampoos and their mousse, phomollient. My hair isn't great and it makes it look much, much better.

nomilknosugarplease · 27/08/2018 20:59

Thanks so much ladies. I’m a dry shampoo addict but find it makes my scalp flaky if I use too much? Anyone else get that? What dry shampoos do you all prefer - I use the standard Batiste one but am open to options.

Needahairbrush I’ve avoided that range like the plague since I bought the dry shampoo last Christmas and it was the worst thing I’ve ever used but maybe it’s just that one product! I’ll try the actual shampoo.

Thank you for all the suggestions I think I’m going to treat myself to a few. DD always welcomes my rejected products with eager arms so they won’t go to waste if I don’t like them Grin

What's your natural colouring?

SilverHairedCat · 27/08/2018 21:03

What shampoo and conditioner are you using at the moment? Any other products?

Do you use a hair dryer? Have you been shown how to blow dry your hair properly?

Do you touch your hair / run your hands though it? Are you a fiddler? Grin

aperolspritzplease · 27/08/2018 21:04

I'm guessing the flaky from dry shampoo might not be flake, but too much product. How often do you was your hair? Every day is too much for my fine lank hair.

nomilknosugarplease · 27/08/2018 21:09

I’m light brown which I think makes the greasy roots look even worse! My hair is also extremely straight.

I have been using Tressemme Deep Cleanse (I think that’s the name - the green one) which was working fantastic but it’s stopped working and now my hair feels so dirty again Sad My hair is quite long so I use quite a lot of the matching conditioner but I am really careful to only put it on the ends. I don’t use any other products and I don’t touch my hair a lot I swear! Grin

See, I’m thinking it might have something to do with the drying process! I usually let it air dry because I have no clue how to blow dry my hair properly - I actually think the way my hairdresser does it makes it look even flatter and worse Confused

I didn't like that clay shampoo - it made y hair even more lank.

The Aveda stuff mentioned below is good. I'm currently using this stuff and quite like it.

SilverHairedCat · 27/08/2018 21:13

Have you tried shampoo and conditioner without sulphates in them? They are supposed to be better because you don't get product build-up on the hair shaft.

Maybe watch a few YouTube videos on how to dry hair with a hairdryer and see if you can find a technique that works for you?

Petalflowers · 27/08/2018 21:14

The Aussie Pure Locks shampoo is good. You can’t find it everywhere, though.

delphguelph · 27/08/2018 21:16

Get it cut,it'll look thicker.
Stop using conditioner.
Double wash with Johnson's baby shampoo.

Pancakepoop · 27/08/2018 21:16

My hair sound just like yours. I find it’s much, much less limp and greasy when it’s been blow dried as it dries it out a bit. I find Aussie for fine hair good, with Batiste dry shampoo and Aussie blow in a can which adds a bit of texture and volume. Also, having it too long will weigh it down and make it greasy.

delphguelph · 27/08/2018 21:17

You need shampoo without silicone : you can pay big bucks for redken Cleansing Creme etc but cheap shampoo rarely contains silicones either, such as Alberto Balsam etc

Whysosad · 27/08/2018 21:18

Stop using conditioner (only once a week if neccisary). Use talcum powder instead of dry shampoo!

Digestive28 · 27/08/2018 21:22

I third stop conditioning. You don’t need itand it just makes your hair greasy. If you can wash less often as well do.
I had a similar problem and tried loads but found less is more so one basic shampoo every other day and it’s fine.

Digestive28 · 27/08/2018 21:22

If you do need conditioner at all only put on ends of hair not from root to tip

nomilknosugarplease · 27/08/2018 21:27

You’re all so good, I wouldn’t have a clue without you lot Grin Right so silicone and sulphates are out and I’m ditching the conditioner.

I need to invest in a hair dryer. Any recommendations for good ones which aren’t too pricy or do they all do the job?

Thanks so much everyone, I know it’s only hair but it’s really been getting me down recently. Excited to try out all your suggestions!!!

Hair is absolutely something you can feel strongly about - you wear it every day!

Hair dryers, no idea. I've had the same one for about 15 years.... It's a powerful one though. ##helpful##

delphguelph · 27/08/2018 21:36

I haven't got one myself but babyliss big hair hairdryer? I think that's the name...
