Hair permanently lank and greasy - advice?

I have such oily thin hair and it’s always so greasy looking, even just a few hours after I’ve washed it Sad It looks so messy, flops out of any style and just hangs all limp and horrible. It’s been like it my whole life.

Has anyone got any tips or products I can try? I tried the Aussie volume shampoo after a suggestion on here but it seemed to make it worse! Has anyone had any success? Is air drying better or blow drying? Thanks in advance!

Head and shoulders (the men’s one with added caffeine) works well. I’ve used dh’s before

Processedpea · 27/08/2018 21:40

I would colour it , I have highlights and it gives my hair lots of texture

PasstheStarmix · 27/08/2018 21:42

I second the highlights

My hair is the same as yours op, I've found that cutting it short has done wonders for it, I used to keep it long as I'm young (30) and it was more trendy to have long hair but it was just depressing me as I felt I never looked good! I've had it cut into a sloping Bob 2 months ago and never had so many hair compliments in all my life! I use a volumising shampoo (usually tresemme or sometimes dove) and just condition the tips, then I blow dry it with my hair upside down and the tip of the hairdryer as close to the root as you can withstand (that's what my hairdresser advised) that gives it lots more volume. On the second day I use a little dry shampoo or sometimes a few shakes of talcum powder works better if I'm honest. I wash it every other day now whereas before the hair cut it was every day.

I don't think I'll ever have the type of hair that can be washed twice a week which I'd love but this is so much better than it used to be. Hope that helps.

I find baby shampoo strips my hair and use it 2/3 times a week. Does wonders.

Also the herbal essences naked clear shampoo.

Very minimal conditioner or Moroccan oil on the ends.

I've had mine cut into a bob with a fringe & it's better but thinking of getting a perm to add volume! A body wave or something.

I'm going sulphate free soon too - body shop ginger shampoo has been Vg for my greasy locks

Also diva hairdryer is recommended a lot but babyliss big hair is a blow drying brush which is fab, especially for fringes-that's Normally all I use mine for & it makes a difference

My hair was always limp and greasy. I've recently switched to dr bronners bar soap (the baby one) with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse. (I did a fair bit of reading about the subject and tried a few different bar soaps, but this one suits me perfectly). My hair just doesn't seem to get greasy now, i can go days between washes and it seems thicker and holds it's shape more. Also, you are doing your bit for the environment as there is no empty shampoo/conditioner bottles being sent to the recycling. I appreciate it's not for everyone, but it works for me.

Create Images hair dryers are brilliant, you can get them in some salons or order them from supply shops.

Lush shampoo bars would be worth a try too, the Karma one is my favourite.

The Babyliss Big Hair is really good. I don't use it all the time (too lazy) but it definitely adds volume for nights out etc.

Illegallyblonde123 · 29/08/2018 10:38

My hair is fine and used to be greasy.

I use Palmers Coconut shampoo and use egg as a conditioner (although apply this before shampooing). I wash my hair every day (mainly due to exercise) and use egg twice a week.

The egg makes my hair really full.

Also agree with not using a conditioner too frequently. I probably do one deep condition every two or three weeks.

LtheWife · 30/08/2018 11:14

I have that annoying super fine, slippery, grease prone light brown hair too. Elvive Fibrology Air shampoo has been a game changer for me (and the regular, non air conditioner once a week). I can now go for two days between washes with my hair worn down, three days if I add a bit of dry shampoo before going to bed on day two and wear it up on day three.

If I want a bit extra volume I’ll use Elnett volume and strong hold mousse before blow drying to end up with smooth, swishy hair that attracts the occasional compliment (previously unheard of). And as a bonus it now holds a curl/wave for the first time ever too.

The only thing that helped me is the Lush Godiva shampoo bar. It has been a miracle worker on my dull, lanky, rubbish hair.

buckeejit · 30/08/2018 15:37

I recently bought the redken one leave in conditioner spray. What is everyone's experience with leave in conditioner? Not sure myself but interesting to read everyone's preferences. And strange that hardly anyone Else I know seems to have fine greasy hair, yet here we all are!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/08/2018 19:07

Ovaltine - please can you tell me more about shampoo bars? How do you use them? How long do they last? Don't they just go all soggy or fall to pieces? I'm trying to reduce plastic but shampoo bars feel a bit of a step too far at the moment.

I was the same. I think it was silicone build up from shampoo and styling products.

Now use silicon and sulfate free with tiny bit of loreal extraordinary oil before blow drying with Babylis big hair.

Once a week I use a detox type shampoo to remove build up.

Much better!

Miniwookie · 30/08/2018 21:49

Definitely blow dry. My dd has fine greasy hair and it makes all the difference. She doesn't need any special technique, just tipping her head upside down and blasting with the dryer makes all the difference. If she lets it air dry it looks lank immediately.
