What’s with all the rainbow clothes?

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 17:32

I know what it represents but why (when I took dd shopping today) are shops just full or rainbow jumpers, shirts, trousers and shoes?

It’s hard trying to find my teenage daughter clothes, she’s not very fashionable and dresses more for comfort. Primark and newlook are about the only shops we could find clothes in but most of it was covered in rainbows, we have come home with a rainbow tracksuit and the most hidious rainbow cardigan.

I’m probably going to get flamed but I just don’t understand the obsession with sexuality and rainbows. Dd thinks by wearing rainbow clothes she is supporting her friends who are gay or trans.

I thought it was just a fashion phase. Like cacti, flamingos and pineapples.

argumentativefeminist · 23/08/2018 17:36

Some will be leftover stock from Pride month in June but in general rainbow just seems to be very on trend at the moment. I love the Primark sweatpants with the rainbow stripes. Rainbows don't always come with an intention to represent the LGBT community, sometimes they're just pretty!

Foggymist · 23/08/2018 17:37

Because some people (like me) really like rainbows and/or wearing lots of colour. Nothing to do with gay pride/support anyone when I wear them, I just really like colourful stuff.

ElspethFlashman · 23/08/2018 17:39

I think it's just a trend like leopard or those hideous big buttons down the front of everything.

Makes you look like a Blue Peter presenter.

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 17:43

Foggy I love colourful stuff too but tend to not follow the crowd on fashion. Nothing wrong with rainbows, just the amount of them Grin. The tracksuit I bough her does look pretty cool, The cardigan was on the sale rail and is just awful but I let dd buy it as it makes a change from her wearing black. She usually hates stuff that everyone else wears, we have managed to avoid flamingos and pineapples, oh and the dreaded unicorns.

I thought it was just a fashion trend, a throw back to retro 70s/80s styling BlushBlush

Rainbow sweatpants? (Pricks up ears)...

I like the orderliness of rainbows. Each colour is where it should be. Maybe I'm a loser but I love them 😊 I'm quite keen on kitsch clothes though.

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 18:01

Kate I like hippie style 70’s stuff.

The sweatpants I bought dd today have a glitter rainbow on them and a matching cropped hoodie to go with them.

Your DD likes the stuff so what's the problem??

MeadowHay · 23/08/2018 18:14

I love rainbows. Our wedding colour scheme was rainbow Grin. But I am a queer. But that's not why I like rainbow stuff.

Timefortea99 · 23/08/2018 18:20

Rainbows are a natural occurence not just a symbol of gay pride, just like the word gay doesn’t just refer to somebody’s sexual preferences. As someone has already said, it is fashion. Last year it was stars and parrots and flamingoes. This year it is leopard print and rainbows. Gets a bit annoying when that is all that the shops are selling. Rainbow’s are a bit Timmy Mallet.

championquartz · 23/08/2018 18:23

I thought it was just a fashion phase tooBlush. Quite like rainbows.

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 18:29

I don’t have a problem with dd liking it, I bought them for her? Hmm
Just slightly miffed by the amount of clothes with rainbows on them but I guess that’s what happens with fads, it’s the first time dd has wanted anything that’s in trend (so I was happy to buy it for her). I know it’s not necessarily linked to gay pride but dd seems to think it is as it seems to be topic of conversation at school amongst her friends.

It reminds me of children's TV presenters in the 1970s. Seems to be all gay pride signalling these days.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/08/2018 18:35

Still not sure why you're miffed? Not trying to be goady or a imply anything.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 23/08/2018 18:38

That tracksuit just makes me think of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Feeling a bit old now. Blush

Racecardriver · 23/08/2018 18:41

I only tolerate rainbows to avoid looking like a bigot. No one over the age of five should wear rainbow clothes.

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 18:44

😁

That's what I was thinking - Rod, Jane and Freddie! But that's not rod and Freddie is it? Deffo Jane though.

argumentativefeminist · 23/08/2018 19:12

You do seem a bit miffed that she's supporting her gay peers, to be honest. Otherwise why keep bringing it up? You could have just said "does anyone else get annoyed when one trend dominates all the clothes shops? E.g. cold shoulders, animal prints"

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 19:23

argu why would I be bothered that she supports her friends? I have trans friends, I have gay friends as does dd, I don’t feel the need to dress up as a rainbow to show my support but if dd does that’s up to her. I’m miffed that people don’t think the rainbow trend is linked to gay pride. I’m miffed about the amount of rainbow clothes in the shops. Dd can wear what she likes but I would like to have a better selection of non rainbow clothes to buy myself.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 23/08/2018 19:34

Nothing to do with supporting anyone. The gay folks in my family would take the piss royally if I rocked up in a signal virtue jumper (what the fuck are you wearing? Didn't we have jumpers like that when we were kids? Do you want a whistle - Pride's that way... You're a bit old for that Fek...). I literally fought my 'pride' battles in the 70s and 80s and don't feel that slapping on a bit of commercial tat is quite the same.

Plus the fact that Primark was donating a % of its raibow pride tat clobber to Stonewall.

argumentativefeminist · 23/08/2018 19:40

So in the OP you can't understand the "obesession" with sexuality and rainbows and now it's not about sexuality at all, it's just about you wanting to be able to buy plainer clothes?

I totally don't disagree with any of what you're saying about wanting a variety of clothes or about supporting LGBT people personally and not through clothes. But it seems like you've changed your focus from the beginning of the thread?

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2018 19:53

argue (appropriate name by the way), I’m not going to argue. My Op asked what the obsession was with rainbow clothing? I then pointed out that my daughter feels the clothes are linked to gay pride and buy wearing them she’s supporting her friends, I then highlighted the fact I would like to be able to shop for a variety of clothes (was just looking for a plain big jumper without rainbows as I am in my late 30’s and not 14). All valuable points. All still reasonable points related to my original question ‘why are shops full of rainbow clothes?’.

Any way, I have got my answer ‘it’s a trend/fad’. I will continue my hunt for a jumper.
