Your best warmest winter coats for school run

Any ideas on where to get a warm weatherproof coat for school run that won't break the bank?

Something toasty, warm, not too heavy to wear, at least vaguely if not very stylish (!?), waterproof? With a hood etc.

Tips welcome thanks :)

Northface artic parka. Shop around and you can get a good deal. Warmest cost ever and will last year's!

Fragglerock75 · 23/08/2018 11:32

Didriksons parka - they are exey but if you shop around now, you can get one for about half price. I live in the east of Scotland where it is always windy (umbrellas totally not an option) and with one of these I feel pretty much insulated from even the worst weather.

Looking for similar. So following

rightknockered · 23/08/2018 11:57

I like this one, because it looks nice and seems quite functional.

Ooh and need pockets. Can not be doing with carrying a bag in windy wintery conditions

OzymandiasFanClub · 23/08/2018 13:15

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread!!!! I'm a sucker for a warm coat but I don't need any more.....,
Once on the Cotswold Outdoors site however and I find myself buying this....
It's a bit mumsy anoraky... but I like the idea of being warm without wearing full on coat.
My gift to myself to stem the hardship and disappointment of GCSE RESULTS day....

I've got my eye on this one from Fatface
www.fatface.com/women/clothing/coats-jackets/cumbria-long-puffer-jacket/935681.html?dwvar_935681_color=charcoal&cgid=women-clothing-coats-and-jackets#start=8

It's the Cumbria long puffer jacket.

Warandpeas · 23/08/2018 17:12

Watching. I spent last winter alternating between a Uniqlo long down puffa and a Joules raina coat but neither quite delivered on the warm/dry front completely.

Anyone had a good experience with Superdry coats, or is it too fashion-y to be really practical?

Fireworks91 · 23/08/2018 17:46

Seasalt ones are good

Oly5 · 23/08/2018 18:00

I second the North Face arctic parka. Warm, waterproof, mine looks like new still and it’s about to do its 4th winter

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/08/2018 18:05

I really rate Lands' End coats, although they are a bit lacking in style. It's no help to you now, but they are often good value in the end of season sale in spring.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 23/08/2018 18:08

I have an amazing Craghoppers coat that I can't wait for it to be cold enough to wear. I'm always freezing and it keeps me toasty and dry.

N0bodysM0t · 23/08/2018 19:30

A lot of mumsnetters don't rate north face coats. I wonder why.

@blackamericanonosugar, i had a landsend coat years ago, I should have just gone for a north face coat as I wore the coat SO much that it would have been worth it to spend a bit extra.

The landsend one was SO warm though. It got me through the coldest parts of about 8 winters before I chucked it.

Hmmalittlefishy · 23/08/2018 19:34

I have a long crag hopper one and it's amazingly warm, waterproof, lots of pockets.
I'm not too fussed if it's not stylish or trendy as I'm toasty warm each morning and afternoon Grin

missfit123 · 23/08/2018 20:23

thanks so much everyone. I looked for the North Face Arctic Parkas and there aren't any parkas on their website?? Strange. Have they stopped because of summer? Withdrawn from selling Parkas? Or am I having an internet moment of stupidity?

I love my Didrikson parka. Warmest coat I've ever owned.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/08/2018 20:27

I got a rab alpine puffy last year and loved it.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/08/2018 20:29

rab.equipment/uk/microlight-alpine-jacket-66

It's super warm, I was cycling commuting in the snow last year in it.

Viewfield · 23/08/2018 20:46

I spend lots of time reading similar Mumsnet threads last autumn and ending up buying a Didrikson. It wasn't the cheapest but on horrible days I feel like I'm a warmth bubble. No regrets, it's still like new, I'll have it for years.

Cheekyblinders · 24/08/2018 00:57

Love my seasalt coat... cozy on the inside, waterproof on the outside and long enough to keep me dry when wearing long boots standing in the rain on the touch line, which I do a lot of during the winter... best coat I’ve ever had for keeping me warm and dry through matches plagued by rain and snow flurries!

Sammysquiz · 24/08/2018 07:04

For me it signals the end of summer when these threads start appearing on S&B Grin

I have a Merrall coat which is very warm and waterproof, so worth having a look at their website.

hilbobaggins · 24/08/2018 11:41

Which one did you get Viewfield? I’m now looking at the Didrikson website and feel a bit overwhelmed with choice? Need something really warm and waterproof.

HonkyWonkWoman · 24/08/2018 11:42

Try TK Max they always have loads.

RingtheBells · 24/08/2018 11:48

Worth looking on Next Clearance for Seasalt and the brands of waterproof coats, There is more choice on Next early morning as the restock then.

I have Seasalt coats which are very good and I love bought either from Next Clearance or Seasalt sale which is still on so worth a look as they are quite pricey.
