Contemplating first bikini wax

Hi everyone
I’m off on holiday in a few weeks and am considering booking my first ever bikini wax before I go. I really don’t like the idea (hence having never had one before!) but I feel self conscious about the hairs and don’t really want to shave this time. I have two questions:

  1. Do I need to trim or anything first? Blush
  1. Would it be weird to also book a pedicure with the same therapist?! I want a pedicure but don’t know if I’d rather just run away from the salon after the wax, never to show my face there again?!

As an alternative, consider an epilator....

But it depends how much hair you want to remove.

Right between the legs is very painful but the other bit is fine.

Squirrelonwheels · 22/08/2018 19:37

Thanks @userofthiswebsite - I only want to take off the bikini line down the sides - nothing in the middle and definitely not underneath. Do you mean buy an epilator?

Don't trim. They will trim it if they need to, which is very unlikely.

Once someone has smeared hot wax over your pubic area and ripped it off, you will never be embarrassed again, so a pedicure with the same therapist would be fine. The salon where I go, they wouldn't bat an eyelid...

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 19:42

Do ittttt!!! You’ll never go back!

For a first bikini wax I’d go to a bikini waxing salon rather than someone who does multiple treatments but that’s just me

Just exfoliate and moisturise beforehand, they’ll trim for you

HeyMacWey · 22/08/2018 19:43

Do the pedicure first so you can enjoy that without the feeling of your pubic area on fire.

I'd trim to about 5-10mm.

But a basic bikini is not at all embarrassing - so just go for it!

Enjoy your holiday

HeyMacWey · 22/08/2018 19:44

Or you could just pluck in the comfort of your own home.

NotTakenUsername · 22/08/2018 19:45

Yes, definitely exfoliate really well before. With a good therapist it will hurt momentarily for the first few visits, but eventually you hardly feel it.
Definitely worth it, no shaving rash or quick regrowth.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 19:46

Do the pedicure first so you can enjoy that without the feeling of your pubic area on fire.

If your public area feels like it’s on fire they’re not doing it right

It will sting in the millisecond after it comes off but that’s it, it shouldn’t hurt at all when you walk out the door

Ohyesiam · 22/08/2018 19:52

I had bikini waxes every month for 15 years ( before fantastic laser came along). I never exfoliated, never trimmed, but always took two paracetamol an hour beforehand.
Went to loads of different salons, no complaints about any of them.

Penguin34 · 22/08/2018 19:55

As long as the salon uses hot wax (it's a type, not the temp) then you won't feel it after it's done and it will only take 5 minutes.
To be honest not that many people have normal bikini waxes these days, I have one regular client that has just the sides and I probably do 25 Brazilians or Hollywood's a week.
Now, I'm not saying having a standard bikini wax is not 'normal' I'm saying your therapist is probably used to having ladies on their couch getting all the hairs or of everywhere with knickers off so will not bat an eyelid that you're there just having the sides done.

Where stretchy knickers, so you can pull them to the side.
Choose a salon by looking at their reviews or by recommendation.
Try to relax and not be nervous - honestly fannies are like elbows to us.
Find a salon that uses hot wax - in my opinion Lycon is best by far.
DO NOT go to a salon on groupon or pick the cheapest.
Have your wax first, get that 5 mins of pain out the way and enjoy your pedi

Xx

Penguin34 · 22/08/2018 19:56

Don't bother trimming either, you don't want it too short.

If you're used to shaving leave it 2 weeks before your wax.

Penguin34 · 22/08/2018 19:57

Don't have a subbed or exfoliate for 24-48 hours before your wax.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/08/2018 19:58

I'd advise against getting it done for the very first time just before you go on holidays... you might feel very uncomfortable for a week or two after due to itchy skin reactions and regrowth. I guess it depends on how sensitive your skin is.

Penguin34 · 22/08/2018 20:08

If anyone is finding they have pain or irritation after waxing please find a new therapist.
You should walk out of the salon like nothing has happened.

If you have allergies that can cause this you will be asked in consultation.

You can have your wax straight before you're holiday, just make sure no subbed, sauna, swimming, hot baths or perfumed products 24hrs after waxing.

emsiboob · 22/08/2018 20:10

Do it!

Had my first one this summer, then just my second last week. Bloody amazing, wished I'd took the plunge years ago.

First one most painful then second a lot better. Not had any rash or ingrowing hairs x

userofthiswebsite · 22/08/2018 20:13

OP,

Yes, buy one.

Once you've bought it, the expense is done. Obviously you pay each time you go for a wax. A good one (Braun Silk Epil) is about £90 give or take.

They can be used wet or dry. I started using it wet as it was painful at first but you get used to it quickly. If you're not bothered about getting the hair right between your legs, then it sounds as though it'd be a good option for you.

LettuceKissYa · 22/08/2018 20:19

I get a full Holywood (I know this isn't your requirement but stick with me here..)

I'm a wee bit in love with my waxing lady

I don't feel a thing. Not a thing. We discuss the entire world, have built up a familiar relationship and the only time I think about my next appointment is when my calendar tells me I'm due..

Zero apprehension. She is fab

Also it's only £30 for full leg, Holywood and eyebrows 😍

However, when she went off on maternity leave I did go to another salon. I cried. I fucking cried. She had to peel me off the ceiling - I was cut and bruised for weeks

If you find your waxing lady never, ever let her go

Shartnado · 22/08/2018 20:28

@LettuceKissYa how on earth can you not feel a thing?! Does she put anaesthetic in the wax?!! I've had Hollywood twice and my entire body was sweating after, it was that excruciating, and I have a fairly high pain threshold!

Squirrelonwheels · 22/08/2018 20:28

Thanks everyone, I think you’ve convinced me to book! Appreciate all the advice Smile

LettuceKissYa · 22/08/2018 20:31

@Shartnado I don't even have skin made of leather..because the other therapist nearly put me in therapy literally

Honestly - I can hold a full conversation with my wonderful waxer without even missing a breath - she's so good

If you were here in Belfast I would send all of you to her - £30!

Some salons charge £30 for a Holywood alone ffs

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 20:32

I have hollywoods and they’re not excruciating at all!

Shartnado · 22/08/2018 20:34

@LettuceKissYa she sounds like a goddess! I went to the same woman twice and now I'm thinking she is not good!! And it was £35 for just the Hollywood! Double ouch!

LettuceKissYa · 22/08/2018 20:36

She is a goddess. She worked in London for twenty years just doing waxing before returning home..

She can charge £30 a go because it takes 45 minutes for everything and her waiting room is packed..from young women to old men who like swimming 😂🙈

furandchandeliers · 22/08/2018 20:57

You will be fine, back when I was a novice waxed I found the anticipation worse than the actual ripping off, and it's a small area so should be over quickly.

Cheesymonster · 22/08/2018 21:11

I had a g string wax for my holiday (they go higher than a normal bikini wax but nothing off the underneath/bum). I was too scared to get a Hollywood but the therapist was so lovely and really put me at ease. I'm probably going to go back for a Hollywood although it was much more expensive.

I was asking a lot of questions about Hollywoods and she said she does tons of them, not regular bikini waxes anymore and she told me the bum and labia don't hurt but the top of the crease of your vagina is the worst!
