Don’t know if there are others who like this sort of thing on here but thought I would start a thread for those who favour quality, pared down looks.

What are your best finds of late? What accessories are you looking at to update your basics?

I am currently loving stuff from The Row but it is beyond my budget.
I tend to shop at The White Company and Pure Collection and pick up shoes etc at Jigsaw.

I like tweed.

BertrandRusselI · 21/08/2018 14:40

Sometimes a little bit of corduroy to mix things up.

Clionba · 21/08/2018 15:44

I like Pure, and John Lewis collections like Modern Rarity, Kiin and some own label. I also like Cos and the styles of shoes. Whistles have some nice separates. I've just bought a couple of loose, plain shirts from French Connection.

Uniqglo's INES DE LA FRESSANGE autumn collaboration looks promising.

I've just bought two cashmere sweaters from Ryan Roche in the sale and an Issey Miyake skirt for a very good price on EBay.

Gruach · 21/08/2018 17:23

I’d call my preferred style ‘crunchy’ rather than minimalist - very much led by fabric and texture. Tweed, velvet ... Cashmere’s too floppy, I like wool with teeth. So usually a thing will have enough interest from fabric and tailoring not to need any extra frippery.

I come from a line of seamstresses, the latest of whom really struggled with mass produced garments when she first came to the U.K. So I like a couture edge at 80’s Floral St vintage shop prices. And it’s taken me decades to understand what I want from clothes.

(That said, my second favourite frock is a printed, polyester mesh, ruffletastic dream from TopShop ...)

Sounds itchy Gruach.

Currently considering this.....

Where's that coat from, Paul? My kind of thing.
Has anybody found cashmere that doesn't pill?

Nyancat · 21/08/2018 18:09

Beautiful coat bollock, where is it from?

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 21/08/2018 18:14

That’s White Company.

Re cashmere -I think it all pills but the best for me has been Pure. Jigsaw also good.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 21/08/2018 18:18

Has anyone had these WHite Company block heeled boots? Are they comfortable for all day wear?

Looking forward to seeing the new Uniqlo Ines Collection.

I had a look at the latest Modern Rarity Collection last weekend and found the quality of the materials lacking.

onemouseplace · 21/08/2018 18:22

I had the most beautiful pale grey, soft, simple cashmere sweater from The White Company from about 5 or 6 years ago. It was perfect, barely pilled. Unfortunately I wore it so much it wore into holes under the arms so it had to go this year, so I am on the look out for a replacement.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 21/08/2018 18:24

This is the sort of stuff I like.....

The quality thing is so frustrating, what a shame about the Modern Rarity stuff. I got a nice, plain pair of trousers last year and they've been great. I got a navy sweater from M&S Autograph and it pilled after a couple of wears! So maddening.

Bejazzled · 21/08/2018 18:39

That's the type of thing that the late lamented Jaeger Boutique used to be sooo good at. Occasionally I still manage to pick up individual pieces from eBay but they are few and far between, never been let down by their quality.

Floisme · 21/08/2018 18:49

Not sure if I qualify. I'm quite fickle and guilty of changing my style whenever I'm bored but at the moment I'm drawn to quite a severe look where the interest is in the silhouette and the fabric rather than colour, pattern or embellishment (quite a departure for me as I normally love colour). One thing I've realised is that it's not an easy look to do on the cheap as there's nowhere to hide. So I'm buying mostly second hand and digging old stuff out of the cupboard as I was a big vintage buyer in my youth and have some great 40s tailoring which is getting hammered.

One of my favourite designers is Margaret Howell. Can't afford her, not even in the sales but I've managed to bag a few items second hand. It's very spare, unembellished, limited colour scheme, not timeless but only incremental changes year on year. Doesn't always look that special at first sight but be warned, it grows on you. Fabulous quality - as indeed it should be at those prices.

Another tweed lover here and again I mostly buy it second hand. I find weigh n' pay sales good for jackets. Also love a country clothing store.

On the high street I like the Uniqlo U range (Christophe Lemaire), sometimes Cos but only if I can get to a real shop and Toast for trousers, mainly in the sales. And sometimes M&S, yes really.

Like you Gruach I'm from a family of seamstresses. All my clothes were handmade until I was about 13 when I rebelled and saved up my pocket money to buy from a shop. I also dug my heels in and refused to learn to sew myself which I've regretted ever since.

olderthanyouthink · 21/08/2018 19:06

Oooooh thanks for pointing out the IDLF x Uniqlo stuff, I like the look of one of the wrap dresses. I've got one from a previous year I love.

Only problem is, I'm pregnant... it will fit after though, eventually.

I am hating buying Maternity clothes, I can't spend loads on something I'll only wear for a few months and a lot of the offerings are shit anyway.

insertimaginativeusername · 21/08/2018 19:20

@PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair I love those over the knee boots, where were they from?

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 21/08/2018 20:59

Not sure insert - I just saved it to my photos as I often do when I see a style I like or feel I can wear a version of it with the stuff I have.

I will be pulling out navy Clarks Caddy Belle boots as over the knee boots are having a thing again this year.

XingMing · 21/08/2018 21:10

German clothes tend to move slowly but are generally well cut from good fabric that washes and wears well. I have winced at the initial spends, even in the sales, but find myself wearing them relentlessly until they are threadbare. My favourite is Annette Goertz. Look on Ebay for secondhand.

Clionba · 21/08/2018 21:13

Any other German makes, XingMing?
I've seen Gerry Weber in JL but not seen anything I've fancied.
